You cleared CTET once. Do you need to clear it again in a few years? No. The CTET certificate is now valid for life, for every category. That single change, made by NCTE in 2021, turned CTET from a recurring exam into a one-time hurdle for most people.

Is CTET valid for lifetime? The short answer
Yes. The CTET September 2026 Information Bulletin (section 11) says the validity period of the CTET qualifying certificate for appointment is lifetime for all categories of candidates. General, OBC, SC, ST and differently abled candidates all get the same rule.
Lifetime validity means the certificate does not expire as a proof that you passed the Teacher Eligibility Test. It does not mean you get a job for life, and it does not replace the other conditions a recruiter sets. More on that below.
From 7 years to lifetime: what changed
When CTET started in 2011, the qualifying certificate was valid for 7 years from the date of the result. Many teachers who passed early had to sit the exam again just to keep their eligibility alive, even when they were already working or waiting for a vacancy.
In 2021, the then Education Minister announced an NCTE decision to make the TET certificate valid for life. As widely reported at the time, the change was applied retrospectively from 2011. So a certificate printed with "valid for 7 years" is treated as a lifetime certificate now.
A practical caveat: some recruiting offices move slowly with circulars. If an official questions your older certificate, politely point to the NCTE decision and the current bulletin, and confirm the position in writing with the recruiting body if you have any doubt. Do not assume a clerk will know the rule on day one.
Unlimited attempts and reappearing to improve your score
There is no cap on how many times you can take CTET. Section 11 of the bulletin also allows a candidate who has already qualified to appear again to improve the score.
Why would anyone do that? Because the bulletin tells schools to give weightage to CTET scores in recruitment. A pass at 91 and a pass at 120 are both valid, but some employers may look at the number. If your old score sits just above the pass line and you are targeting competitive posts, a second attempt can make sense.
My honest view: reappear only if a specific recruitment you are aiming for uses the CTET score. Otherwise that time is better spent on the recruitment exam itself.
The pass line itself is fixed by NCTE at 60 percent, which is 90 out of 150. Category concessions are decided by the employer, not by CBSE. The qualifying marks page explains this in detail.
What you get in DigiLocker
CBSE does not post paper certificates for CTET. According to the bulletin (section 20), the documents are issued in digital format through DigiLocker.
- Digitally signed: the documents carry CBSE's digital signature.
- Legally valid: the bulletin states they are valid under the IT Act.
- QR code: an encrypted QR code on the document can be verified using the DigiLocker app.
- Account creation: DigiLocker accounts are created for all candidates who were present in the exam, and the login credentials are sent to the mobile number registered with CBSE.
This is why the mobile number in your application matters. If you have lost access to that number, sort it out before the result, not after.
CTET certificate download from DigiLocker: step by step
The flow below is the general DigiLocker process. Menu names in the app and website change from time to time, so the exact labels may differ a little on your screen.
- Open the DigiLocker website or the DigiLocker app on your phone.
- Sign in using the credentials CBSE sent by SMS, or sign in with the mobile number registered with CBSE and the OTP.
- If you already have a DigiLocker account on the same mobile number, use that account.
- Go to Issued Documents. If the CTET documents are already pushed, they will be listed here.
- If they are not listed, use the search or "Get more documents" option and look for CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education).
- Choose CTET Marksheet or CTET Eligibility Certificate.
- Select the year and session of your exam, and enter the details asked, such as roll number.
- Tap Fetch or Get Document. The document is saved to your Issued Documents.
- Open it and save a PDF copy on your phone and in your email.
For the September 2026 session (exam on 12 and 13 December 2026), these documents will appear only after the result. CBSE has not announced the result date yet.
If the document does not show
- Wait a few days after the result; documents are pushed in batches.
- Check that you selected the right session and year.
- Match your name spelling and roll number with the admit card.
- If it still fails, contact CBSE through the helpline details on ctet.nic.in.
How to verify a CTET certificate
Recruiters and schools do not need to call CBSE to check your document. They can scan the encrypted QR code with the DigiLocker app. The scan shows whether the document is genuine as issued.
A tip for candidates: carry a clean printout with a sharp QR code, and keep the DigiLocker app logged in on your phone during document verification. A blurry photocopy of a photocopy can make a QR scan fail.
Where the CTET certificate is accepted
Section 10 of the bulletin lists where CTET applies.
So for Kendriya Vidyalaya and Navodaya Vidyalaya jobs, CTET is the TET you need. For a state government school, check that state's recruitment notice first. Also confirm that your degree matches the post, using the eligibility rules.

A lifetime certificate is not a job
The bulletin is blunt about this: qualifying CTET does not confer a right to recruitment or employment. It is only one of the eligibility criteria. Recruitment still depends on vacancies, the recruitment exam, age limits, your qualifications and the rules of the employer.
So treat the certificate like a driving licence. You need it to drive, but it does not buy the car. After qualifying, your next step is to track KVS, NVS and state vacancies and prepare for their own exams.
Still to qualify? Use the extra time
If you are appearing on 12 and 13 December 2026, the postponement has given you roughly 14 extra weeks. That is enough to finish the syllabus properly once. The free Paper 1 study material has topic-wise notes on CDP, Maths, EVS and language pedagogy; one topic a day is a steady pace.
From October, add timed practice. The CTET Paper 1 test series has 10 free full-length tests; one test a week, with a proper review of wrong answers, is better than rushing all 10 in the last fortnight.
Checklist after your result
- Log in to DigiLocker and fetch both the marksheet and the eligibility certificate.
- Download PDFs and store them in two places (phone and email).
- Check name, father's or mother's name, category and marks for errors.
- Keep the mobile number registered with CBSE active.
- Take two clear colour printouts for document verification.
- Note your score; some recruiters give it weightage.
