RRB ALP 2026 Notification: 11,127 Vacancy, Last Date, Apply Online

The Railway Recruitment Boards released the detailed RRB ALP 2026 Notification under CEN No. 01/2026 for 11,127 Assistant Loco Pilot posts. The application window opened on 15 May 2026 and closes on 14 June 2026, so if you are reading this in the first week of June, you have a narrow runway left.

This is the full notification in plain language: vacancies zone-wise, eligibility, the revised exam pattern (two things changed this cycle), salary, and what to actually do in the next ten days. The numbers here come straight from the official CEN 01/2026 PDF, not from second-hand blogs.

Latest Updates

Two pattern changes in CEN 01/2026 matter more than the headline vacancy count, and most aspirants have not registered them yet.

First, the final merit is now built on a 50:50 weightage between Part-A of CBT-2 and the CBAT score. In the earlier ALP cycles this ratio was 70:30 in favour of CBT-2 Part-A. The aptitude test (CBAT) has effectively doubled in importance. If you treat it as an afterthought, you will lose the post even with a strong technical paper.

Second, CBT-1 no longer carries a General Awareness section. As per the official syllabus in the notification, Stage 1 now tests only Mathematics, Mental Ability, and General Science. The total stays at 75 questions in 60 minutes, so the time pressure is the same, but your current-affairs prep buys you nothing in Stage 1.

The vacancy spread is also worth a look. RRB Mumbai (Central Railway) alone carries 1,078 ALP posts, the single largest block. Secunderabad, Bhubaneswar, Ranchi and Siliguri each cross 600. So your choice of RRB is not a formality; it decides your real competition.

Eligibility Criteria

Educational Qualification

You qualify for RRB ALP 2026 if you hold any one of these, completed on or before the closing date:

Matriculation or SSLC plus an ITI from an NCVT or SCVT recognised institute in a relevant trade (Fitter, Electrician, Instrument Mechanic, Mechanic Diesel, Turner, Machinist, Mechanic Motor Vehicle, and similar trades listed in Annexure A). The same Matric base plus a Course Completed Act Apprenticeship in those trades also works.

Alternatively, Matriculation plus a three-year Diploma in Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics, or Automobile Engineering (or a combination of these streams) is accepted in lieu of ITI. A Degree in those engineering disciplines is accepted in lieu of the Diploma.

If you are still waiting for your final qualifying result, you cannot apply. The notification is explicit on this.

Age Limit

Age is 18 to 30 years as on 01.07.2026. Relaxation applies on top of the upper limit:

Category Upper-age relaxation
OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) 3 years
SC / ST 5 years
Ex-Servicemen (UR/EWS) 3 years after deducting service
Course Completed Act Apprentices Extent of apprenticeship training

For the unreserved 18-30 band, your date of birth must fall between 02.07.1996 and 01.07.2008. SC/ST and OBC-NCL candidates get their respective earlier cut-off dates as listed in the CEN. If you qualify for relaxation on more than one ground, you get the single highest one, not the sum.

Medical and Other Requirements

ALP carries the A-1 medical standard, which is among the strictest in Railways. You need distant vision of 6/6, 6/6 without glasses (with a fogging test), plus clearance on colour vision, binocular vision, night vision and more. Here is the part many candidates miss: anyone who has undergone LASIK or any other corrective eye surgery is not eligible for ALP. The post is also marked Not Suitable for Persons with Benchmark Disabilities in this CEN.

Exam Pattern

The selection runs through five stages: CBT-1, CBT-2, CBAT, Document Verification, and Medical Examination.

CBT-1 (screening only)

Section Questions Marks
Mathematics 75 total 75 total
Mental Ability (combined) (1 mark each)
General Science

Duration is 60 minutes. Negative marking is 1/3rd mark per wrong answer. Minimum qualifying percentage is 40% for UR/EWS, 30% for OBC-NCL, 30% for SC, and 25% for ST. CBT-1 marks do not count in the final panel; this stage only shortlists you for CBT-2 at 15 times the vacancies notified for your chosen RRB.

CBT-2 (decides your merit)

Part Subjects Questions Time
Part-A Maths, General Intelligence & Reasoning, Basic Science & Engineering 100 90 min
Part-B Trade-specific (DGT trade syllabus) 75 60 min

Total: 175 questions in 2 hours 30 minutes, with 1/3rd negative marking. Part-B is qualifying only, needing 35% across all categories. Only your Part-A score moves forward, provided you clear Part-B.

CBAT (Computer Based Aptitude Test)

Candidates equal to 8 times the vacancies per category are called for CBAT, based on Part-A marks. You must score a minimum T-score of 42 in each test battery separately. There is no negative marking, and the test runs only in English and Hindi. CBT-1 and CBT-2 are available in English, Hindi and 13 regional languages.

Syllabus

CBT-1

Mathematics covers number system, BODMAS, percentages, ratio and proportion, mensuration, time and work, time and distance, simple and compound interest, profit and loss, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and the usual calendar and clock items. Mental Ability covers analogies, series, coding-decoding, syllogism, Venn diagrams, data interpretation, directions, and statement-assumption sets. General Science is Physics, Chemistry and Life Sciences at the 10th standard level.

CBT-2 Part-A

Same Maths and Reasoning base as CBT-1, but pitched harder, plus Basic Science and Engineering. The engineering portion is where most candidates underprepare: engineering drawing, units and measurements, work-power-energy, basic electricity, levers and simple machines, occupational safety, and IT literacy.

CBT-2 Part-B

Trade-based. Pick the trade matching your ITI or engineering discipline from the DGT list. The official syllabus document tells you the topics but not the weightage; for that you have to mine previous ALP papers trade by trade.

Selection Process

CBT-1 is a filter. It decides nothing about your final rank, but if you do not clear it, nothing else happens. Then CBT-2 Part-A becomes your scoring paper, while Part-B only has to be cleared at 35%. Many strong candidates clear Part-A comfortably and then trip on a weak trade paper, so do not ignore Part-B.

The real fork is CBAT. With the revised 50:50 weightage, your aptitude score now matters as much as your entire technical Part-A. A candidate who topped Part-A but scrapes through CBAT can be overtaken by someone with a balanced profile. After CBAT comes Document Verification and the A-1 medical, where the vision standard ends more candidacies than people expect.

Salary / Job Profile

The initial pay is ₹19,900 at Pay Level-2 of the 7th CPC, as stated in the notification. That is the basic figure. On top of it come Dearness Allowance, HRA based on your posting city, and the running or mileage allowance that loco-running staff earn, which is the real attraction of this post. In practice the in-hand for a new ALP usually lands somewhere around ₹35,000 to ₹40,000 depending on city and running duty, though the official notification only confirms the ₹19,900 initial pay and leaves the allowances to apply at posting.

Beyond cash, you get NPS, medical facilities for self and family, the railway pass, and a clear promotion ladder toward Loco Pilot (Goods, then Passenger, then Mail/Express). The trade-off is the lifestyle: irregular hours, night duties, and the medical fitness you must maintain throughout service.

Preparation Strategy

With the form closing on 14 June, your first job this week is administrative, not academic. Lock your RRB choice after checking the Annexure-B vacancy table, because that choice is final and cannot be changed once submitted.

For the next 60 to 90 days before CBT-1, split your day in three. Mathematics and Reasoning together deserve the largest block; these two carry CBT-1 and reappear in CBT-2 Part-A, so the effort compounds. Give General Science a daily 10th-standard NCERT pass. Start Basic Science and Engineering for Part-A early, since most aspirants leave it for last and then panic.

Do not chase ten YouTube strategy videos. Solving one full ALP previous-year paper in timed mode teaches you more about pacing than a week of passive watching. A practical first step: today, download the CEN 01/2026 PDF, read Annexure-A and Annexure-B, and pick your RRB.

Previous Year Trends

ALP draws huge application volumes against a tight medical filter, so the effective competition is lower than the raw applicant count suggests; a large chunk never clears the A-1 vision standard. CBT-1 cut-offs in past cycles have stayed high for UR in zones like Mumbai and Secunderabad because vacancies there are large and attractive. Maths and Reasoning have historically decided CBT-1, with General Science playing a supporting role. The removal of General Awareness this cycle pushes even more weight onto those two, so accuracy there is non-negotiable.

Important Tips

  • Pick your RRB on vacancy-to-competition logic, not on which city is nearest. A zone with 1,000 posts can be a smarter bet than one with 60.
  • Pay the fee at submission. Do not rely on the 16 June fee-payment buffer.
  • Treat CBAT as a real exam from day one, not a last-month formality. The 50:50 weightage makes it half your merit.
  • If you have had LASIK, re-read the medical clause before paying. You are not eligible, and the fee is only refunded after you appear in CBT-1.
  • Do not skip Part-B prep just because it is qualifying. A failed trade paper cancels a brilliant Part-A.
  • Use the regional-language medium for CBT-1 and CBT-2 if your English reading speed costs you time. CBAT, though, is English and Hindi only.

Mock Test & Practice Strategy

For ALP, the analysis after a mock matters more than the mock itself. Take one full CBT-1 mock every few days in the early phase, then move to one every other day as the exam nears. After each, spend longer reviewing than you spent attempting: tag every wrong answer by topic, and watch whether your errors cluster in mensuration, in a reasoning type, or in negative-marking-driven guesses.

ExamAtlas has a free RRB ALP-specific mock test series with AI analytics that breaks down your accuracy topic-wise, which is useful after every mock to see exactly where marks are leaking. Pair the CBT mocks with CBAT battery practice early, given the new weightage.

FAQs

What is the RRB ALP 2026 last date to apply?

The RRB ALP 2026 online application closes on 14 June 2026 at 23:59 hrs. The fee payment for already-submitted forms can be made till 16 June 2026, and a modification window stays open from 17 to 26 June 2026. Applications are accepted online only through official RRB websites.

How many vacancies are there in RRB ALP 2026?

RRB ALP 2026, under CEN No. 01/2026, has 11,127 Assistant Loco Pilot vacancies across all 21 Railway Recruitment Boards. The largest single block is RRB Mumbai with 1,078 posts. Zone-wise distribution is given in Annexure-B of the official notification and may be revised later.

What is the age limit for RRB ALP 2026?

The age limit is 18 to 30 years as on 01.07.2026. OBC-NCL candidates get 3 years relaxation, SC/ST get 5 years, and Ex-Servicemen get relaxation as per rules. If you are eligible for relaxation on more than one ground, only the highest single relaxation applies.

What is the RRB ALP 2026 exam pattern?

Selection has five stages: CBT-1 (75 questions, 60 minutes, screening only), CBT-2 (Part-A 100 questions plus qualifying Part-B 75 questions), CBAT, Document Verification, and Medical. Final merit is based on Part-A of CBT-2 and CBAT in a 50:50 ratio. CBT-1 and CBT-2 carry 1/3rd negative marking.

Is there negative marking in RRB ALP 2026?

Yes. There is 1/3rd mark negative marking for every wrong answer in both CBT-1 and CBT-2. The CBAT has no negative marking. Because of this, blind guessing in the CBTs can pull your normalised score down, so attempt only where you are reasonably sure.

What is the RRB ALP salary 2026?

The initial pay is ₹19,900 at Pay Level-2 of the 7th CPC, as per the notification. With DA, HRA and the running allowance for loco staff, the in-hand for a new ALP typically falls around ₹35,000 to ₹40,000 depending on city and duty, though only the ₹19,900 initial pay is officially confirmed.

Can I apply for RRB ALP 2026 if I had LASIK surgery?

No. Candidates who have undergone LASIK or any other corrective eye surgery are not eligible for the ALP post under CEN 01/2026. The medical standard is A-1, requiring unaided 6/6 vision, and the application includes a self-screening medical declaration on this point.

Final Conclusion

The single most useful thing to take from this cycle: the exam quietly rewards a different profile than before. With General Awareness gone from CBT-1 and CBAT now worth half your merit, the aspirant who builds aptitude and reasoning strength beats the one who memorised current affairs and ignored the psycho test.

One honest caveat. The A-1 medical, and the LASIK bar in particular, end more ALP candidacies than any cut-off does, so confirm your eligibility before you pay. For a focused start, the free RRB ALP mock series on ExamAtlas with AI analytics will show you within a week whether your weak zone is Maths, Reasoning, or the engineering section in Part-A.
