The RRB NTPC graduate vs undergraduate question comes up every cycle, and in 2026 it matters more than usual. There are two separate notifications this year: CEN 06/2026 for graduates with 3,477 posts, and CEN 07/2026 for 12th-pass candidates with 1,688 posts. Same syllabus, same exam pattern, but very different posts, pay and odds.

This guide puts the two side by side and answers the questions aspirants actually ask: what is the difference, can a graduate fill both forms, and which one gives you a better chance of a railway job in 2026?

RRB NTPC Graduate vs Undergraduate: Quick Comparison

RRB NTPC graduate vs undergraduate: graduate posts (CEN 06/2026) need a degree, pay Level 5 or 6 and allow age up to 33; UG posts (CEN 07/2026) need 12th pass, pay Level 2 or 3 and allow age up to 30. Graduates can apply to both, with separate fees.

The pay gap is large. At the current DA of 60%, a Level 5 post pays roughly ₹50,000 a month after the NPS cut in a Y-class city, against about ₹34,000 for Level 2. Over a career, starting three levels higher also means reaching supervisory grades years earlier. The detailed in-hand figures are in our RRB NTPC salary guide.

Eligibility Differences That Trip People Up

  • Age: the UG upper age is 30, three years less than the graduate limit of 33 (UR, on 1 January 2027). A 31-year-old graduate can only apply for graduate posts.
  • 12th marks: UG posts need at least 50% in 12th for general candidates. SC, ST, PwBD and ex-servicemen candidates, and anyone with a higher qualification such as a degree, are exempt.
  • Result awaited: for both CENs, you must hold the qualification by the closing date. A final-year student whose degree result is not out by 6 November cannot apply for graduate posts, but can apply for UG posts on the strength of 12th.
  • Medical: Goods Train Manager (A-2) and Trains Clerk (A-3) have strict eyesight rules, and LASIK candidates have not been eligible for them.

Full tables, including date-of-birth ranges and relaxations, are in our RRB NTPC eligibility 2026 guide.

Can a Graduate Fill Both NTPC Forms?

Yes. CEN 06/2026 and CEN 07/2026 are separate recruitments. A graduate who is within the UG age limit can apply to both, choosing one RRB in each, and paying a separate fee for each. There is no rule against it, and many graduates do exactly this every cycle.

The only rule to respect is one application per CEN. Two applications under the same CEN, even to different RRBs, lead to rejection of all of them.

Remember the ages too. The UG upper limit for UR candidates is 30 on 1 January 2027, so a graduate born before 2 January 1997 (UR) will usually be eligible only for the graduate form, unless a category relaxation applies.

Should you fill both? Our view

  • Yes, if you are a graduate under 30 and can type, or wear glasses. The UG clerk posts (800 seats across Junior Clerk and Accounts Clerk) are C-2 medical posts and a real second chance.
  • Yes, if your eyesight rules out Goods Train Manager. Without GTM, the graduate pool shrinks to about 727 seats, and the UG pool adds 1,688 more chances.
  • Optional, if you are confident of a high graduate score and have A-2 eyesight. Even then, the second form costs little compared with a lost year.

The two exams will likely be on different dates, so one preparation serves both. A selection is not final until DV and medical, which is another reason not to put everything on one form.

Exam Pattern and Difficulty: Same Paper, Different Bar

Both exams follow the same structure: CBT-1 with 100 questions (General Awareness 40, Maths 30, Reasoning 30) and CBT-2 with 120 questions (50, 35, 35), each in 90 minutes with 1/3 negative marking. The syllabus is the same; the level differs slightly, with graduate shifts sometimes a little tougher in Maths and GA.

The bigger difference is in cut-offs. In the 2025-26 cycle, UG CBT-1 cut-offs for general candidates clustered tightly around 81 to 84 in most large RRBs. Graduate CBT-1 cut-offs spread much wider, from about 70 for Goods Train Manager in a small RRB to about 89 for CCTS in a large one, because each post code behaves differently.

Where Are Your Odds Better in 2026?

Numbers alone favour the graduate CEN: 3,477 seats against 1,688. But the real comparison depends on you.

  • With A-2 eyesight and no typing, your graduate pool is about 2,806 seats (GTM plus CCTS) and your UG pool about 888 (CCTC plus Trains Clerk, if you meet A-3).
  • With glasses but good typing, your graduate pool is about 727 (CCTS, Senior Clerk, JAA) and your UG pool about 1,500 (CCTC, Junior Clerk, Accounts Clerk), plus Trains Clerk if your lens power is within the A-3 limit of 2D, so the UG form becomes very important.
  • With glasses and no typing, you are looking at CCTS (56), CCTC (700) and possibly Trains Clerk (188). Start typing practice now; it opens up 1,471 more seats across both CENs.

The full seat breakdown is in our RRB NTPC vacancy 2026 guide.

Career Growth: Graduate vs UG Posts

Graduate posts start at Level 5 or 6 and lead to supervisory grades: Goods Train Manager into senior and passenger train manager grades, Senior Clerk into Head Clerk and Office Superintendent, JAA into Section Officer (Accounts) through the departmental Appendix-II exam. UG posts start lower but also grow through seniority and departmental exams, and UG employees can move up through departmental selections where the rules allow.

Our honest view: a UG post is not a dead end. Plenty of railway officers started as clerks. But if you are a graduate who can realistically crack the graduate CEN, the three-level head start is worth aiming for.

What the Work Looks Like: Two Typical Days

Goods Train Manager (graduate): you sign on at a crew lobby, check the freight train's documents and brake continuity with the loco crew, and travel in charge of the train's safety until the next crew-change point. Shifts rotate, nights are common, and you rest at running rooms away from home. Pay is Level 5 plus running allowance.

Commercial cum Ticket Clerk (UG): you work a fixed shift at a booking or reservation counter, handling tickets, cash and passenger queries. Hours are more regular, the work is passenger-facing, and accuracy with cash matters. Pay is Level 3.

Neither is "better" in the abstract. Many people who choose a desk job at Level 3 are happier than those who take a running job at Level 5 and dislike the nights. Decide with your eyes open before you rank posts.

Three Myths About Graduate vs UG NTPC

  • "Graduates should not fill the UG form." There is no such rule, and the 50% condition does not apply to them.
  • "UG is easier, so the cut-off is lower." In 2026, UG CBT-1 cut-offs for general candidates were about 81 to 84, higher than several graduate post codes.
  • "A UG selection blocks the graduate one." They are separate recruitments. If selected in both, you choose which offer to accept.

Bihar and Jharkhand Aspirants: One Practical Point

In the 2025 cycle, RRB Patna and Muzaffarpur had tiny NTPC seat counts in both CENs (23 and 21 graduate seats; 24 and 39 UG seats), while Ranchi had 651 graduate but only 56 UG seats. So the best RRB for you may differ between the two forms. Wait for each detailed CEN's RRB-wise table before choosing, and do not assume the same RRB is right for both.

How to Apply for Both Without Mistakes

  1. Use the same RRB account (one-time registration) for both CENs.
  2. Fill the graduate form from 8 October and the UG form from 15 October.
  3. Choose one RRB per CEN; it can be the same or different.
  4. Give post preferences carefully in each; include every post you are eligible and fit for.
  5. Pay each fee separately and keep both confirmation pages.

RRB NTPC Graduate vs Undergraduate: FAQs

Can I fill both RRB NTPC graduate and undergraduate forms?

Yes. They are separate CENs (06/2026 and 07/2026). A graduate within the UG age limit can apply to both, with a separate fee and one RRB choice for each.

What is the difference between NTPC graduate and undergraduate posts?

Graduate posts need a degree and pay Level 5 or 6; UG posts need 12th pass and pay Level 2 or 3. The exam pattern and syllabus are the same.

Is the NTPC UG exam easier than the graduate exam?

The syllabus is the same, and difficulty is similar, with graduate shifts sometimes slightly tougher. UG cut-offs, though, were tightly clustered around 81 to 84 for general candidates in 2026.

Can a 12th pass apply for NTPC graduate posts?

No. Graduate posts need a bachelor's degree by the closing date, 6 November 2026.

What is the age limit difference between NTPC graduate and UG?

For UR candidates on 1 January 2027: 18 to 33 years for graduate posts and 18 to 30 years for UG posts, with the same category relaxations.

Which NTPC post is best for a graduate?

For pay, CCTS (Level 6). For the most seats, Goods Train Manager (2,750). For a desk career with fast growth, JAA. The right choice depends on eyesight and typing.

Final Word on RRB NTPC Graduate vs Undergraduate

The RRB NTPC graduate vs undergraduate choice is not either-or for most graduates. Fill both if you can, prepare once, and let your eyesight, typing and the RRB-wise seats decide which result you take.

The deadline that matters first is 6 November for the graduate form. Get that done this week, then the UG form from 15 October.
