Last Updated: 7 October 2026. Salary figures use the current Dearness Allowance of 60% (effective 1 January 2026). The July 2026 DA revision has not been notified yet.
The RRB NTPC salary starts at a basic pay of ₹19,900 for Level 2 clerks and goes up to ₹35,400 for Level 6 posts. But basic pay is not what lands in your bank account. With DA at 60%, house rent allowance and transport allowance, a Level 5 Goods Train Manager in a mid-sized city takes home roughly ₹50,000 a month before tax, and more once running allowance is added.
Most salary pages online still calculate with DA at 12% or 17%, numbers from years ago. This guide works out pay for every 2026 NTPC post with today's DA, shows how city class changes it, and then answers the question that actually matters on your form: which post should you rank first?
RRB NTPC Salary 2026: Quick Answer
RRB NTPC salary in 2026 ranges from ₹19,900 basic (Level 2 clerks) to ₹35,400 basic (Level 6 CCTS). At 60% DA, approximate monthly pay after the 10% NPS cut is ₹34,000 to ₹61,000 in a Y-class city, depending on post. Running staff earn extra allowances.
| Post (2026 CEN) | Pay Level | Basic Pay | Gross (Y city) | After NPS (Y city) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Chief Commercial cum Ticket Supervisor | 6 | ₹35,400 | ₹66,600 | ₹60,936 |
| Goods Train Manager | 5 | ₹29,200 | ₹55,440 + running allowance | ₹50,768 + running allowance |
| Senior Clerk cum Typist | 5 | ₹29,200 | ₹55,440 | ₹50,768 |
| Junior Accounts Assistant cum Typist | 5 | ₹29,200 | ₹55,440 | ₹50,768 |
| Commercial cum Ticket Clerk (UG) | 3 | ₹21,700 | ₹41,940 | ₹38,468 |
| Junior Clerk, Accounts Clerk, Trains Clerk (UG) | 2 | ₹19,900 | ₹37,260 | ₹34,076 |
"Y city" here means HRA at 20% and the lower transport allowance rate. Income tax and professional tax (where the state levies it) come on top of the NPS cut. Figures are our calculation from 7th CPC rules; see the method below.

How the RRB NTPC In-Hand Salary Is Calculated
Central government pay has five moving parts. Once you see them, you can calculate your own salary for any city.
- Basic pay: fixed by your pay level (table above).
- Dearness Allowance (DA): 60% of basic from 1 January 2026. It is revised twice a year. The July 2026 revision is pending; calculations based on the price index point to about 63%, which would add roughly ₹876 a month at Level 5.
- House Rent Allowance (HRA): 30% of basic in X-class cities, 20% in Y-class, 10% in Z-class. These higher rates apply because DA has crossed 50%. If you get railway quarters, HRA is not paid.
- Transport Allowance (TA): for Level 3 and above, ₹3,600 in the larger listed cities and ₹1,800 elsewhere; for Levels 1 and 2, ₹1,350 and ₹900. DA is paid on TA too.
- NPS deduction: 10% of (basic + DA) goes to your pension account. The government adds its own share on top. New employees can also opt for the Unified Pension Scheme in place of NPS.
Worked example, Goods Train Manager in a Y-class city: basic ₹29,200 + DA ₹17,520 + HRA ₹5,840 + TA ₹2,880 = ₹55,440 gross. Minus NPS ₹4,672 = ₹50,768, before income tax, professional tax and small deductions such as group insurance.
RRB NTPC In-Hand Salary by City Class
Where you are posted changes your pay by ₹6,000 to ₹10,000 a month. The table shows pay after the NPS cut at DA 60%.
| Pay Level (posts) | X city | Y city | Z city |
|---|---|---|---|
| Level 6 (CCTS) | ₹67,356 | ₹60,936 | ₹57,396 |
| Level 5 (GTM, Sr Clerk, JAA) | ₹56,568 | ₹50,768 | ₹47,848 |
| Level 3 (CCTC) | ₹43,518 | ₹38,468 | ₹36,298 |
| Level 2 (Jr Clerk, Accounts Clerk, Trains Clerk) | ₹36,786 | ₹34,076 | ₹32,086 |
X-class cities are the big metros such as Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad. Patna and Ranchi are Y-class. One detail most pages miss: Patna is also on the list of cities with the higher transport allowance, so a Level 3 to 6 employee posted there gets about ₹2,880 more than the Y-city column shows.
What happens to these numbers over time?
Three things push pay up every year. DA rises twice a year, the annual increment adds 3% to your basic (Level 5 goes from ₹29,200 to ₹30,100 after the first increment), and promotions move you up levels. The 8th Pay Commission has been set up, but its recommendations are not in force yet, so all figures here are on 7th CPC pay.
Will You Pay Income Tax on an RRB NTPC Salary?
Probably not in the first years, if you stay in the new tax regime. Budget 2025 raised the rebate so that salaried income up to about ₹12.75 lakh a year (₹12 lakh plus the ₹75,000 standard deduction) pays no income tax. Even a Level 6 CCTS in an X-class city earns well under that at the start, about ₹8.8 lakh a year gross.
Two caveats. Tax rules change with every budget, so check the slabs for the year you join. And running allowance, arrears and DA hikes all add to taxable income, so a Goods Train Manager with heavy kilometrage should keep an eye on the total.
What you will see on the pay slip regardless: the NPS cut, a small group insurance deduction, and professional tax in states that levy it. Bihar and Jharkhand both levy professional tax on salaries above set limits, so expect a small monthly line for that too.
Your first pay slip checklist
- Basic matches your level (for example ₹29,200 at Level 5).
- DA is shown at the current rate (60% now).
- HRA matches your posting city class, or is absent if you took quarters.
- NPS (or UPS) deduction is 10% of basic plus DA.
- Any DA arrears from a mid-year revision appear as a separate line.
Goods Train Manager Salary: The Running Allowance Factor
Goods Train Manager is the old "Goods Guard" post, renamed by Indian Railways. It is Level 5, same basic as a Senior Clerk, but the pay slip looks different because it is a running post.
- Running (kilometrage) allowance: paid for the distance the train covers on your duty. It is the main reason running staff earn more than office staff at the same level. The amount depends on your section and trips, so there is no single fixed number.
- Night duty and other duty-linked allowances apply as per rules.
- The cost: irregular hours, night runs, outstation rest at running rooms, and an A-2 medical standard you must keep up through your service.
Our honest read: for a young graduate who is fine with field work, Goods Train Manager pays better in practice than a Level 5 desk post, and with 2,750 of the 3,477 graduate seats it is also the easiest post to get. If you want fixed hours and a family schedule, a clerk post at the same level is the calmer life.
Station Master Salary 2026
Station Master is a Level 6 post with a starting basic of ₹35,400, the same as CCTS. At 60% DA that works out to about ₹61,000 a month after NPS in a Y-class city, and Station Masters also get night duty allowance and often railway quarters near the station.
The catch for this cycle: Station Master is not among the posts in the CEN 06/2026 indicative notice. If the detailed CEN adds it, we will update this page. Until then, the only Level 6 option for graduates is CCTS, with just 56 seats.
Clerk and Accounts Posts: Senior Clerk and JAA Salary
Senior Clerk cum Typist and Junior Accounts Assistant cum Typist are both Level 5 office posts with the same pay as Goods Train Manager minus the running allowance. The difference is the work and the growth path.
- Senior Clerk: establishment, personnel and general office work in divisional and zonal offices. Promotion runs through Head Clerk and Office Superintendent grades.
- JAA: accounts work in the railway accounts department. The departmental Appendix-II (IREM) exam opens the route to Section Officer (Accounts), a much faster climb for those who clear it.
Both need a qualifying typing test (30 wpm English or 25 wpm Hindi), and both are C-2 medical posts, so glasses are not a problem. Eligibility details are in our RRB NTPC eligibility 2026 guide.
RRB NTPC Undergraduate Salary: CCTC, Clerks and Trains Clerk
For 12th-pass candidates, Commercial cum Ticket Clerk is the best-paid UG post at Level 3 (₹21,700 basic, about ₹38,500 after NPS in a Y city). It is also the biggest UG post in 2026 with 700 seats. The work is ticketing, reservation and passenger-facing commercial duty.
Junior Clerk, Accounts Clerk and Trains Clerk are Level 2 (₹19,900 basic, about ₹34,000 after NPS in a Y city). Trains Clerk is an A-3 medical post handling train and wagon records in yards, while the two clerk posts are office jobs with a typing test.
If you are a graduate, remember you can fill both forms. Our RRB NTPC graduate vs undergraduate comparison weighs the Level 2-3 posts against the Level 5-6 ones.
Perks Beyond the Pay Slip
- Railway passes: privilege passes and privilege ticket orders for you and your family every year.
- Medical care: treatment at railway hospitals and health units for you and dependants.
- Quarters: railway housing where available, often near stations and yards (HRA stops when you take one).
- Pension: NPS with government contribution, or the Unified Pension Scheme if you opt for it.
- Job security and transfers: NTPC posts are largely divisional, so most people serve within their zone.
RRB NTPC Post Preference Strategy for 2026
Your post preference order decides which post you get if you clear CBT-2. Here is how we would think about the four graduate posts.
| Post | Level | Pay reality | Work style | Medical | Typing | 2026 seats |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| CCTS | 6 | Highest basic | Commercial supervision, passenger-facing | B-2 | No | 56 |
| Goods Train Manager | 5 | Level 5 plus running allowance | Field, shifts, night runs | A-2 | No | 2,750 |
| JAA | 5 | Level 5, fast growth via exam | Accounts office | C-2 | Yes | 300 |
| Senior Clerk | 5 | Level 5 | General office | C-2 | Yes | 371 |
Three common profiles
- Good eyesight, no strong preference: CCTS first, Goods Train Manager second, then JAA and Senior Clerk. You lose nothing by ranking CCTS first, and GTM is where most seats are.
- Wear glasses or had LASIK: GTM (A-2) is likely out. Rank CCTS, JAA and Senior Clerk, and start typing practice today.
- Commerce or accounts background, want a desk career: JAA first. The Appendix-II exam route can take you further than seniority alone.
One mistake to avoid: leaving out a post you are eligible for because you "do not like it". If your merit is good enough only for that post, leaving it out can mean no selection at all. You can always resign later; you cannot add a post after the form closes. The form steps are in our RRB NTPC apply online 2026 guide.
A Note for Bihar and Jharkhand Aspirants
East Central Railway, headquartered at Hajipur, and the Dhanbad division in particular, run some of the heaviest freight traffic in the country because of the coal belt. That is a big reason Goods Train Manager posts in the east are numerous. If you pick RRB Patna, Muzaffarpur or Ranchi, expect a good share of GTM postings on freight-heavy sections, with HRA mostly at Y or Z rates.
Is NTPC Salary Better Than Group D or ALP?
Group D starts at Level 1 (₹18,000 basic), and ALP at Level 2 (₹19,900) plus running allowance. NTPC graduate posts start at Level 5 or 6, so the entry pay is clearly higher, and promotions start from a higher base. The trade-off is competition: Group D CEN 09/2025 has 22,195 posts and ALP CEN 01/2026 has 11,127, against 3,477 NTPC graduate seats. The full comparison is in RRB Group D vs NTPC vs ALP.

Final Word on RRB NTPC Salary
The RRB NTPC salary question is really a post-preference question. Between a ₹50,000 desk job and a ₹50,000-plus running job, the right answer depends on your eyes, your typing speed and how much field work you want.
Decide your order now, while the form is open, and fill it once. Then put the energy into the CBT, because no post preference matters until your score clears the cut-off.
