The RRB Group D vs NTPC vs ALP question has a fresh set of numbers this year. Group D (CEN 09/2025) has 22,195 posts and its CBT is already over. ALP (CEN 01/2026) has 11,127 posts, with CBT-1 scheduled for early November 2026. NTPC 2026 has 3,477 graduate and 1,688 UG posts, with applications opening this month.
All three are Railway Recruitment Board exams, but they hire for very different jobs, at different pay, with different qualifications. This guide compares them on the points that decide which one you should put your energy into.
RRB Group D vs NTPC vs ALP: Quick Comparison
RRB Group D vs NTPC vs ALP: Group D (Level 1, ₹18,000) needs 10th or ITI and has most posts; ALP (Level 2, ₹19,900 plus running allowance) needs 10th with ITI or diploma; NTPC (Level 2 to 6) needs 12th or a degree and pays most.
| Point | Group D (CEN 09/2025) | ALP (CEN 01/2026) | NTPC (CEN 06/2026 + 07/2026) |

Vacancies: Where Are the Seats?
On seats, Group D is far ahead: 22,195 posts, more than four times NTPC's 5,165. ALP sits in between with 11,127. Previous cycles followed a similar order: Group D CEN 08/2024 had 32,438 posts, ALP CEN 01/2025 was announced with 9,970, and NTPC's 2024 and 2025 cycles had 11,558 and 8,868 posts.
More seats does not automatically mean easier selection, because applicants scale with seats. But for a 10th or ITI candidate, Group D and ALP are the realistic paths, while NTPC is open only to 12th-pass and graduate candidates. The 2026 NTPC seat breakdown is in our RRB NTPC vacancy 2026 guide.
Salary: How the Three Compare
| Exam | Starting basic | Approx. monthly after NPS, Y-class city, DA 60% | Extra |
|---|---|---|---|
| Group D | ₹18,000 (Level 1) | About ₹31,000 | None special |
| ALP | ₹19,900 (Level 2) | About ₹34,000 | Running (kilometrage) allowance |
| NTPC UG | ₹19,900 to ₹21,700 (Level 2-3) | About ₹34,000 to ₹38,500 | None special |
| NTPC Graduate | ₹29,200 to ₹35,400 (Level 5-6) | About ₹50,800 to ₹60,900 | Running allowance for Goods Train Manager |
Figures are our calculation with DA at 60%, HRA at the Y-city rate of 20% and transport allowance at the standard rate for each level; Level 1 uses the lower transport allowance band. ALP's running allowance often lifts its real pay well above the Level 2 figure, which is why many ITI candidates prefer ALP over a Level 2 desk job.
The NTPC pay table by post is in our RRB NTPC salary guide.
Eligibility: Who Can Apply for What
- Only 10th pass: Group D (10th is enough) is your exam. ALP needs ITI or a diploma on top of 10th.
- 10th + ITI in a mechanical or electrical trade: both Group D and ALP; ALP pays better and has a clearer promotion path.
- 12th pass: NTPC UG plus Group D. If you also hold an ITI in a notified trade, ALP too.
- Graduate: NTPC Graduate and NTPC UG (within the UG age limit), plus Group D. A degree in mechanical, electrical, electronics or automobile engineering can also qualify for ALP in place of a diploma.
Age limits differ too: ALP's upper limit is 30 (on 1 July 2026), Group D's 33 (on 1 January 2026), and NTPC's 30 or 33 depending on the CEN (on 1 January 2027), with the usual OBC +3 and SC/ST +5 relaxations. NTPC rules are explained in our RRB NTPC eligibility 2026 guide.
Exam Pattern: Three Very Different Tests
| Exam | Stage 1 | Later stages |
|---|---|---|
| Group D | CBT: 100 questions in 90 minutes (General Science 25, Maths 25, Reasoning 30, GA and current affairs 20), 1/3 negative | PET, then DV and medical |
| ALP | CBT-1: 75 questions in 60 minutes (Maths, Mental Ability, General Science), 1/3 negative | CBT-2 Part A (100 questions, 90 min) and Part B (75 questions on the trade, qualifying), then CBAT, DV and medical |
| NTPC | CBT-1: 100 questions in 90 minutes (GA 40, Maths 30, Reasoning 30), 1/3 negative | CBT-2 (120 questions), typing test for clerk posts, DV and medical |
What each exam really tests
- Group D: school science and Maths plus a physical test. The PET is real: men must carry 35 kg for 100 m in 2 minutes and run 1,000 m in 4 minutes 15 seconds; women carry 20 kg and run 1,000 m in 5 minutes 40 seconds.
- ALP: technical aptitude. Part B tests your ITI trade, and the computer-based aptitude test (CBAT) checks psychomotor skills, with a minimum T-score of 42 in each battery. In CEN 01/2026, CBT-2 Part A and CBAT carry equal weight (50:50) in merit.
- NTPC: general awareness depth. GA is 40% of CBT-1 and over 40% of CBT-2, far more than in Group D or ALP.
The NTPC pattern and chapter weightage are in our RRB NTPC syllabus 2026 guide.
Medical Standards: Check Before You Choose
- ALP: A-1, the strictest railway standard: 6/6 distance vision in each eye and Sn 0.6 near vision, both without glasses. LASIK makes you ineligible. If you wear glasses, ALP is effectively closed.
- NTPC: ranges by post, from A-2 (Goods Train Manager, 6/9 without glasses) to C-2 (clerk posts, glasses allowed). Most candidates with glasses still have NTPC options.
- Group D: varies by post. Many posts fall under B-1 or C-1, where glasses within limits are allowed; a few, such as Pointsman and track machine posts, have stricter A-category standards. Check the post table in the CEN.
Career Growth: Where Each Path Leads
- ALP: a clear running-staff ladder: Assistant Loco Pilot, then Senior ALP or Loco Pilot (Shunter), then Loco Pilot (Goods), Loco Pilot (Passenger) and Loco Pilot (Mail/Express), roughly Levels 5 to 7 at the top, plus running allowance throughout.
- NTPC: graduate posts start at Level 5 or 6 and lead to supervisory grades; UG posts start at Level 2 or 3 and grow through seniority and departmental exams.
- Group D: starts at Level 1. Promotion to Group C posts comes through seniority and departmental selections; many employees also use Group D as a base while preparing for NTPC or other exams.
Which Is Better: Group D, NTPC or ALP?
There is no single answer, but there is a right answer for each profile:
- 10th pass, physically fit: Group D. It has the most seats and the simplest syllabus.
- 10th + ITI (fitter, electrician and similar), perfect eyesight: ALP first. Better pay, running allowance and a defined promotion ladder.
- 12th pass: NTPC UG, with Group D as a parallel option.
- Graduate: NTPC Graduate first, for Level 5 or 6 pay. Fill NTPC UG and Group D too if you can, as backups.
- Wear glasses: skip ALP; focus on NTPC clerk and CCTS posts and on the Group D posts that allow glasses.
Our honest view: if you are eligible for NTPC Graduate, it is worth the extra GA preparation. Starting three or four levels higher changes your whole career. But never skip a form you are eligible for while waiting for the "best" exam; railway selections take a year or more, and a confirmed job in hand is a strong base.
Work Life: What Each Job Feels Like
- Group D: mostly field and maintenance work: track, signalling, workshops, sheds and stations. Physically demanding, often outdoors, with shift duty in some posts.
- ALP: in the locomotive cab with the Loco Pilot, on rotating shifts including nights, with rest at running rooms away from home. Demanding, but well paid through running allowance.
- NTPC: a mix. Clerk and accounts posts are office jobs with fixed hours; ticketing posts are passenger-facing shift work; Goods Train Manager is running duty much like ALP.
Preparing for More Than One Railway Exam
Maths and Reasoning overlap across all three exams, so one daily practice block serves all of them. The differences are in General Awareness (much heavier in NTPC), General Science (central in Group D and ALP), and the trade and aptitude stages (ALP only).
Timing helps this year. The Group D CBT is over, the ALP CBT-1 is in early November, and the NTPC CBT-1 is unlikely before December 2026. An ITI candidate can finish ALP CBT-1 and then switch fully to NTPC GA. Our RRB NTPC preparation strategy 2026 has a 90-day plan that fits around this.
Current Status of All Three (October 2026)

RRB Group D vs NTPC vs ALP: FAQs
Which is better, Group D or NTPC?
NTPC pays more (Level 2 to 6 against Level 1) and has better promotion paths, but needs 12th or a degree and has far fewer seats. Group D is open to 10th pass candidates and has many more vacancies.
Is ALP salary more than NTPC?
ALP starts at Level 2 (₹19,900), the same as NTPC UG clerk posts, but adds running allowance, so its real pay is often higher. NTPC graduate posts start higher still at Level 5 or 6.
Can I apply for Group D, NTPC and ALP together?
Yes, if you meet each exam's eligibility. They are separate CENs with separate applications and fees.
Which railway exam is easiest?
Group D has the simplest syllabus but a physical test and very high competition. NTPC has a heavier GA section. ALP needs technical knowledge and an aptitude test. "Easiest" depends on your background.
Can I join ALP if I wear glasses?
No. ALP needs A-1 medical: 6/6 vision without glasses, and LASIK candidates are not eligible.
How many vacancies are there in Group D, NTPC and ALP in 2026?
Group D CEN 09/2025 has 22,195, ALP CEN 01/2026 has 11,127, and NTPC 2026 has 5,165 (3,477 graduate and 1,688 UG).
