Four marks for a correct answer and one mark off for a wrong one. If you have come to BSSC from SSC or an IBPS exam, that single line changes how you should attempt the paper, and most candidates do not adjust for it until they have already lost forty marks in a mock.

Prelims pattern at a glance
The marking, and why it is not like SSC
Work the arithmetic once and it stays with you.
In SSC CGL Tier 1, a question is worth 2 marks and a wrong answer costs 0.5. The penalty is a quarter of the reward, so four wrong answers cancel one correct one. Here a question is worth 4 marks and a wrong answer costs 1. The ratio is the same quarter, but the absolute numbers are four times larger, which means every single decision carries four times the weight.
The useful takeaway is not "never guess". It is that a guess pays only when you can eliminate two options. At four options and no elimination, a random guess loses money over time. Cut it to two options and the maths turns in your favour.
There is one more thing to sit with. Since 150 questions are worth 600 marks, a single question is worth more here than in almost any other clerical exam in the country. Five careless mistakes in the last ten minutes cost you 25 marks, which in a paper this crowded is the difference between a call and a rejection.
The open book rule
The prelims is conducted with books. You may carry three textbooks into the hall, one for each section: General Studies, Mathematics, and General Science.
- Only NCERT, BSEB, ICSE and other board textbooks are valid.
- Guides, photocopies of any book, handwritten paper, notes and electronic devices are not allowed.
- Every book must carry your name and roll number.
- Exchanging books during the exam is completely prohibited.
- If anything other than your name and roll number is found written in your book, or you carry material beyond a textbook, your candidature is cancelled.

Three pattern rules almost nobody reports
The exam may not be computer based
Under General Administration Department notification 9667 dated 20 June 2024, the written examination can be conducted in online (CBT) or offline mode. The notification keeps both open. Pages telling you it will definitely be a CBT are going beyond the document.
Multiple shifts and normalisation
The commission holds a prelims only when more than 40,000 applications are received. If the number is large, the prelims may be conducted in more than one phase, and in that case the result is prepared using a normalisation process. With 26,426 posts on offer, a multi-shift exam with normalisation is a realistic expectation, and that changes how you should read your own raw score.
English prevails over Hindi
The paper is set in both languages. Where the Hindi and English versions of a question differ, the English question is treated as correct. For a Hindi medium candidate, that is worth knowing before exam day rather than during a dispute afterward.
Qualifying marks by category
These come from Personnel and Administrative Reforms Department resolution 2374 dated 16 July 2007, and they are the floor, not the cut off.
Two rows worth noting because most aggregator tables miss them: EBC at 34 percent sits between BC and SC, and women of every category get the 32 percent floor. Crossing this line does not get you shortlisted, it only makes you eligible to be counted. Previous year cut off data is on the cut off page.
The four stages of selection
How many go through from the prelims
Candidates equal to five times the category-wise available vacancies are selected for the Mains. With 26,426 posts that is a large shortlist in absolute terms, but the applicant pool is in the lakhs, so the ratio still bites.
Prelims marks are not carried forward. Once you are through, your prelims score has no further value.
Tie breaking
When two candidates score the same, the older candidate is ranked higher. If age is also identical, names are ordered alphabetically A to Z. This is a small detail that decides real seats in a recruitment this size.
The typing test applies more widely than you think
Note B of the notification says candidates who pass the main examination will have to appear in the typing and computer test, and that detailed information will be given after the written exam. Exam day rules from the notification
- Biometric thumb impression or iris capture may be taken to prevent impersonation.
- Your admit card alone does not confirm eligibility. The commission decides that separately.
- Candidates barred by UPSC, a state PSC or another commission for misconduct cannot sit the exam.
- Bihar government servants get a maximum of five attempts at commission examinations from the date of the relevant resolution.
How to attempt this paper
An approach that suits the marking. Do the reasoning section first, because it is the one section where books do not help and your mind is freshest at the start. Then take maths, where the ten arithmetic topics give predictable returns. Leave General Studies for last, since it is the section where your book is actually usable.
Keep a hard rule on lookups. Not more than eight to ten in the whole paper, and only for questions where you are already at two options. Anything more and the clock beats you.
