BPSC TRE 4.0 Notification 2026: 32,388 Teacher Posts, Eligibility, Exam Pattern and Revised Dates
BPSC published Advertisement No. 14/2026 on 18 August 2026 for 32,388 school teacher posts under the fourth phase of the Teacher Recruitment Exam (TRE 4.0). Online forms were supposed to open on 1 September. They didn't. A follow-up notice from the Commission now says the application process is likely to begin from 21 September 2026, once a revised advertisement is issued and the online form is amended.
The bigger story sits inside the exam. TRE 1, 2 and 3 each had a single written paper. The BPSC TRE 4.0 notification splits selection into a General Studies Prelims and a subject-wise Mains, and adds a rule that reserves 40% of posts for candidates who passed Matric or Intermediate from Bihar. Below is every number from the official PDF, in plain English: level-wise and subject-wise vacancy, eligibility, age, pattern, qualifying marks, fee, and what to check once the revised advertisement is out.

Latest Update: Why BPSC TRE 4.0 Forms Did Not Open on 1 September
The original advertisement had a clean schedule: fee payment from 01.09.2026 to 29.09.2026 and online application from 01.09.2026 to 30.09.2026. BPSC then issued a one-paragraph notice saying the application process will start only after a revised advertisement and necessary changes to the online form. The expected start date is 21.09.2026, but the notice uses the word "likely", so treat it as tentative.
The notice does not say what is being revised. The original PDF itself gives two hints about where changes can come from:
- Note (i) under the vacancy tables says the number of posts can go up or down if the Education Department amends its requisition.
- Note (ii) says posts for Bangla, Fine Arts, Dance, Maithili, Special School Teacher, Arabic and Persian (Class 9-10), and for Bangla, Bhojpuri, Magahi, Maithili, Pali, Prakrit, Arabic, Persian and Agriculture (Class 11-12) will be notified after a supplementary requisition arrives through the General Administration Department.
- Note (iii) adds that the exam can be held in more than one phase depending on the number of candidates.
Some websites are already quoting a different total. Until the revised advertisement is live on the official website, 32,388 is the only official figure, and every number in this article comes from the 18 August PDF.
BPSC TRE 4.0 Important Dates
BPSC TRE 4.0 Vacancy 2026: Level-wise Break-up
Almost half the posts (16,101) are at the Class 11-12 level. Women get horizontal reservation of 50% at Class 1-8 and 35% at Class 9-12, and the women's figures above are the posts the tables list under that reservation. This benefit is only for women who are domiciled in Bihar.
Category-wise Vacancy (All Four Levels)
One number stands out. SC has 9,973 posts, more than the 9,015 unreserved posts. The reason is backlog: the tables show carried-forward posts inside most reserved columns. Class 11-12 Chemistry alone has 966 SC posts, of which 605 are backlog.
Within these totals, the notification also lists horizontal posts for persons with benchmark disability (865 across four levels), grandchildren of freedom fighters (426) and transgender candidates (27).

Chemistry for Class 11-12 has 3,695 posts, almost as many as the entire primary level. Maths at the same level has only 657. If you hold an M.Sc in Chemistry with B.Ed and STET Paper-II, this cycle is heavily in your favour; M.Sc Maths candidates face much tighter odds. BPSC TRE 4.0 Eligibility Criteria
Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) Requirement
- Class 1-5: CTET Paper-I or BTET Paper-I
- Class 6-8: CTET Paper-II or BTET Paper-II
- Class 9-10 and Special School Teacher (Class 9-10): STET Paper-I
- Class 11-12: STET Paper-II
Teachers appointed and working before 2012 who have passed the competency test are exempt from the TET condition. For CTET, the passing standard follows BTET 2017 rules: 60% for General, 55% for BC, EBC and General women, 50% for SC, ST and disabled candidates. Candidates from outside Bihar, men and women both, are held to the General category minimum.
If you are appearing in STET 2026, you can still apply. The condition is strict though: you must clear STET 2026 before the Prelims, otherwise no admit card will be issued. You also have to submit a self-declaration at the time of applying.
Educational Qualification: Class 1-5
- 12th with at least 50% marks + 2-year Diploma in Elementary Education (D.El.Ed), or
- 12th with at least 45% marks + 2-year D.El.Ed obtained as per NCTE Regulations 2002, or
- 12th with at least 50% marks + 4-year B.El.Ed, or
- 12th with at least 50% marks + 2-year Diploma in Education (Special Education), or
- Graduation + 2-year Diploma in Elementary Education.
For Urdu posts, Maulvi/Alim from the Bihar State Madrasa Education Board or Maulana Mazharul Haque Arabic and Persian University, Intermediate in Urdu with 50%, or graduation in Urdu is accepted. For Bangla posts, 50% in Bangla at Intermediate or graduation in Bangla works. The 18-month NIOS D.El.Ed is valid for teachers who were working before 10.08.2017.
Educational Qualification: Class 6-8
- Graduation + 2-year D.El.Ed, or graduation/post-graduation with at least 50% + B.Ed, or graduation with 45% + B.Ed as per NCTE norms
- 12th with 50% + 4-year B.El.Ed or 4-year BA/B.Sc.Ed
- Graduation with 50% + 1-year B.Ed (Special Education), or PG with 55% + 3-year integrated B.Ed-M.Ed
- BCA with 50% + D.El.Ed or B.Ed, B.E./B.Tech with Science and Maths + B.Ed, or B.Sc (Biotechnology/Electronics) + B.Ed
Subject rules matter here. Maths and Science needs any two of Maths, Statistics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology (Botany or Zoology) at graduation. Social Science needs any two of History, Geography, Political Science, Philosophy, Economics, Commerce, Psychology, Sociology and Home Science. Language teachers need that language as Honours or Subsidiary at graduation.
Educational Qualification: Class 9-10
Graduation or PG in the specified subject with at least 50% + B.Ed, or 45% + B.Ed under the NCTE Regulations of 2002 and 2007, or a 4-year BA.Ed/B.Sc.Ed. Subject groups are defined tightly:
- Maths: Maths with any two of Physics, Electronics, Computer Science, Chemistry or Statistics at graduation, or engineering with Maths. BCA is accepted.
- Science: Zoology, Botany and Chemistry at graduation, or engineering with a science specialisation. Biotechnology and Microbiology are included.
- Social Science: Any two of History, Geography, Economics and Political Science, one of which must be History or Geography. Ancient History counts as History.
- Languages: The language as Honours or Subsidiary at graduation.
Physical Education, Music, Fine Arts and Dance have their own routes (for example, B.P.Ed or graduation in Music with 50%). Special School Teachers need graduation with 50% + B.Ed in Special Education with a valid RCI CRR number.
Educational Qualification: Class 11-12
PG in the specified subject with at least 50% + B.Ed, or 45% PG + B.Ed under NCTE regulations, or 50% PG + 4-year BA.Ed/B.Sc.Ed, or 55% PG + 3-year integrated B.Ed-M.Ed. Accepted PG equivalents include Electronics, Applied Physics and Nuclear Physics for Physics; Biochemistry for Chemistry; Life Science, Genetics, Microbiology, Biotechnology and Molecular Biology for Botany/Zoology; Applied Maths for Maths.
Two exceptions to note. Computer Science candidates do not need B.Ed; MCA, M.Sc Computer Science, B.Tech CS/IT and DOEACC A-level with a PG are among the accepted routes. In Commerce, posts are split into Entrepreneurship (EPS), Accountancy and Business Studies, and a candidate who cleared STET in one of these three can apply only in that subject.
SC, ST, EBC, BC and disabled candidates get a 5% relaxation in the minimum marks at every level.
The 40% Bihar-Schooling Rule
Under Education Department notification 2128 dated 05.08.2025, 40% of total posts will be filled by candidates who passed Matric or Intermediate from institutions located in Bihar. Undivided Bihar counts, so a candidate who passed Matric in present-day Jharkhand before the 2000 bifurcation qualifies. If enough such candidates are not available, the leftover seats move to the open 60% pool.
Separately, every reservation benefit (caste, EWS, women, disability) is only for Bihar domiciles. Outside candidates can apply but compete as Unreserved.
BPSC TRE 4.0 Age Limit
Minimum age is counted on 01.08.2026: 18 years for Class 1-8 and 21 years for Class 9-12. Maximum age is counted on 01.08.2024, which effectively gives two extra years to older candidates.
Example: an unreserved male who turned 38 in March 2025 is still eligible, because on 01.08.2024 he was 37.
Further relaxations apply. Teachers working under Panchayati Raj and urban local bodies have the upper age limit relaxed. Regular Bihar government employees get 5 years (capped at five attempts across service since 12.12.2022), disabled candidates get an extra 10 years, and ex-servicemen get 3 years plus their service period, provided actual age is not above 57. Retirement age is 60, and a candidate can appear in the exam a maximum of 5 times.
BPSC TRE 4.0 Exam Pattern 2026
Prelims: The New Screening Round
Every question has five options. A, B, C or D carry the answers, and E must be marked if you want to skip. Leave all five blank and you lose 1/3 mark, exactly as for a wrong answer. Prelims is only a screening test; its marks do not go into the final merit.
The official topic list: general science, current events of national and international importance, history of India and salient features of Bihar's history, general geography, major geographical divisions of Bihar and its important rivers, Indian polity and economy, major changes in Bihar's economy after independence, the Indian national movement and Bihar's role in it, and general mental ability.
The 32% bar for women and disabled candidates applies only to Bihar domiciles. Candidates for Mains will be shortlisted at 2.5 to 10 times the category-wise vacancies, based on Prelims marks plus guest-teacher weightage. So a subject-category with 100 posts sends somewhere between 250 and 1,000 candidates to Mains, and everyone tied at the cut-off mark gets in.
Mains: Four Level-wise Papers
- Part I (Language): practical knowledge of English and Hindi/Urdu/Bangla. Qualifying only, with a minimum of 30% (9 out of 30).
- Merit: Class 1-5 merit uses Part II marks. Class 6-12 merit uses Part II + Part III. Ties are broken by Part III marks (Class 6-12), then language marks, then age.
- Marking: 1 mark per question, 1/3 negative, same five-option A-E rule as Prelims.
- Qualifying marks: same as Prelims (40%, 36.5%, 34%, 32%). There is no re-evaluation and no supplementary result.
- Social Science (Class 6-8 and 9-10): choose History in Section I and then one of Geography, Economics or Political Science in Section II; or choose Geography in Section I and then Economics or Political Science.
One discrepancy to flag. The Mains table in the PDF gives 2 hours 30 minutes per paper, while a bullet on page 16 says 2 hours. Plan your mock timing for 2 hours so you are safe either way, and check the revised advertisement for the final word. Syllabus for all papers follows SCERT/NCERT, pitched at the minimum qualification for that level.
Selection Process and Merit List
Selection runs in two steps: Prelims, then Mains, with no interview. BPSC prepares a provisional merit list subject-wise and district-wise, and the Education Department verifies documents before appointment.
Guest teachers engaged under Education Department resolution 51 dated 25.01.2018, who hold the Class 11-12 teacher qualification, get 5 marks per year of service, up to 25 marks. This weightage is added only after they clear the minimum qualifying marks in both Prelims and Mains, and it remains subject to the Patna High Court's decision in LPA No. 593/2024. An experience certificate from the District Education Officer and the appointment letter are mandatory.
You can choose up to 38 districts in order of preference. Your result is published only for the districts you picked. Pick ten, and you are considered only in those ten. You can also apply in only one subject per level, and it must be a subject in which you passed the TET.
BPSC TRE 4.0 Salary
The advertisement lists starting pay, not in-hand salary. Class 1-5 teachers start at an initial pay scale of ₹25,000, Class 6-8 teachers at ₹28,000, Class 9-10 teachers at a basic of ₹31,000 per month and Class 11-12 teachers at a basic of ₹32,000 per month, each plus allowances set by the state government. All four posts are non-gazetted.
Actual in-hand pay depends on DA and the HRA class of the posting place, so treat any single in-hand figure you see online as an estimate. For a permanent state job with a retirement age of 60, the Class 11-12 post is the strongest offer in this cycle.
BPSC TRE 4.0 Application Fee
That is a big drop from TRE 3, where unreserved candidates paid ₹750. Link your Aadhaar with your mobile number before applying; the notification warns that an OTP failure during document verification can affect your eligibility.
How to Apply for BPSC TRE 4.0
- Complete One Time Registration (OTR) on bpsconline.bihar.gov.in. Candidates who registered on the old portal must do OTR again on the new one.
- Link or create a DigiLocker account through the Meri Pehchan page that opens after OTR, so documents can be pulled in.
- Build your profile in six steps: personal, address, other information, qualification, experience, then photo and signature. Lock the profile.
- Open the New Application tab, select TRE-4.0, choose the level and subject, and pay through the SBI gateway.
- After payment, click Apply, fill the form and submit. STET candidates enter their BSEB Unique ID; CTET candidates enter the certificate serial number.
- Download and print two copies from the My Account tab. Do not post a hard copy to BPSC.
The photo is captured live through a webcam. You need two scanned signatures, one in Hindi and one in English, each under 20 KB, 150-220 pixels wide and 250-320 pixels high. No correction is allowed after final submission. To change anything, you must cancel the payment and start again, and cancelled fees are not refunded.
Documents to Keep Ready
- Matric certificate (as proof of date of birth), qualification certificates and marksheets
- TET certificate: CTET/BTET marksheet or STET result with BSEB Unique ID
- Caste and permanent residence certificate issued in your father's name, including for married women
- Non-creamy layer certificate (BC/EBC) and EWS certificate (valid for one year from issue)
- Disability certificate, freedom-fighter grandchild certificate, or guest-teacher experience certificate, if claimed
- No Objection Certificate if you are already in government service, photo ID and four recent passport-size photos
Every certificate must be issued on or before the last date of application. A certificate dated after the deadline will not be accepted, even if the deadline is later extended.
What to Do in the Next 30 Days
Most TRE aspirants have spent years on their subject and on pedagogy. That is exactly why the new Prelims is dangerous. Its syllabus reads almost word for word like the BPSC CCE Prelims syllabus, with heavy Bihar content, and it will cut the field before your subject knowledge is even tested.
- Days 1-10: Bihar special. History (ancient Magadh to the 1857 revolt in Bihar and Champaran), geography and rivers, and the post-independence economy.
- Days 11-20: Indian polity, modern Indian history with Bihar's role, and general science at NCERT Class 6-10 level.
- Days 21-30: current affairs of the last six months, mental ability, and your first two full Prelims mocks.
Keep one hour a day for your Part III subject. It carries 80 of 150 marks in Mains and decides your rank, so dropping it for a month is a mistake you will pay for later.
Mock Test and Practice Strategy
From week three, take two full Prelims mocks a week and spend at least 90 minutes analysing each one. The analysis matters more than the score. Mark every question as known, guessed-right, guessed-wrong or skipped, and track those four numbers mock to mock.
The negative marking changes the guessing maths. A blind guess among A-D has an expected score of zero (1/4 × 1 minus 3/4 × 1/3). Eliminate even one option and the odds turn in your favour. Leaving a question totally blank costs you 1/3, so if you skip, always mark E.

How many vacancies are there in BPSC TRE 4.0?
Advertisement No. 14/2026 lists 32,388 posts: 3,847 for Class 1-5, 8,563 for Class 6-8, 3,877 for Class 9-10 and 16,101 for Class 11-12. BPSC has said a revised advertisement is coming, and posts for some languages and Agriculture will be added after a supplementary requisition, so the final total can change.
When will the BPSC TRE 4.0 online application start?
The application was first scheduled from 1 to 30 September 2026. BPSC postponed it, and its latest notice says the process is likely to start from 21 September 2026 after the revised advertisement is issued. The new last date has not been announced yet, so check bpsc.bihar.gov.in regularly.
What is the application fee for BPSC TRE 4.0?
The fee is ₹100 for every category, charged per level. If you apply for two levels, such as Class 9-10 and Class 11-12, you pay ₹200. Candidates who do not enter an Aadhaar number as ID pay an extra ₹200 biometric fee, and bank charges are added on top.

Do one thing this week, before the form opens: finish OTR on the new BPSC portal and get every certificate (caste, residence, non-creamy layer, EWS) issued in your father's name with a date before the application deadline. A certificate dated after the deadline can cost you the post even after a good score.
