IBPS Clerk Eligibility 2026: Age Limit, Degree and the Local Language Rule
Most candidates check two things before applying for IBPS Clerk: their degree and their age. Both are easy to satisfy. A bachelor's degree in any discipline works, and the window runs from 20 to 28 years.
The condition that actually removes people from the process is the third one, and it gets skimmed. You must be able to read, write and speak the official language of the state or union territory you applied for. It is verified after the Mains, and a candidate who fails that verification is out regardless of their score.
Eligibility at a glance
Age limit and the date that decides it
Age is calculated as on 1 August 2026, not as on the exam date or the application date. That single reference date catches people out every year.
A candidate who turned 29 on 15 August 2026 was still eligible for this cycle, because on 1 August they were 28. A candidate who turns 20 in September 2026 was not, even though they will be 20 well before the exam. The rule is mechanical and there is no discretion in it.
Age relaxation
IBPS also provides relaxation to ex-servicemen, widows and divorced women who have not remarried, candidates affected by the 1984 riots, and candidates domiciled in Jammu and Kashmir between 1980 and 1989. The exact years for these categories vary, so confirm them against the CRP CSA-XVI notification PDF on ibps.in rather than a coaching table.
Two rules that trip people up. Relaxation is cumulative in some combinations and not in others, and a PwBD candidate from a reserved category may claim both, but the claim has to be supported by valid certificates in the prescribed format. Second, OBC candidates must hold a non-creamy-layer certificate issued within the validity period IBPS specifies. A creamy-layer OBC candidate applies as General with no relaxation at all.
Educational qualification
A bachelor's degree in any discipline from a university recognised by the Government of India, or a qualification the Central Government recognises as equivalent. Arts, Science, Commerce, Engineering, Law, Agriculture, anything. Percentage does not matter, and there is no minimum marks requirement.
The condition that does matter is timing. Your final result must be officially declared on or before the cut-off date stated in the notification. A provisional certificate or a mark sheet showing the date of result declaration is what you produce at document verification.
This rules out most final-year students. If your degree result came out after the notification's cut-off date, you are not eligible for this cycle, no matter how well you score. Candidates who apply anyway and clear the exam lose the post at verification, which is a far more painful way to find out.
Computer literacy
Operating and working knowledge of computer systems is compulsory, not optional. It can be satisfied in either of two ways:
- A certificate, diploma or degree in computer operations or Information Technology, or
- Having studied Computer or Information Technology as a subject in your high school, college or institute course
Nobody is tested on this at the application stage. It comes up at document verification, so if neither route applies to you, a short recognised computer course completed before verification is the practical fix.
The local language rule
This is the section worth reading twice.
IBPS Clerk vacancies are advertised state by state. When you applied, you chose one state or union territory, and by doing so you committed to being proficient in that state's official language. Proficiency here means all three abilities: reading, writing and speaking.
How it is verified
If you studied that language as a subject in class 10 or class 12 and can produce the mark sheet, you are normally exempt from any further test. If you cannot produce that documentation, you sit the Language Proficiency Test after the Mains.
The LPT carries no marks towards the merit list. It is purely pass or fail. A candidate who scores at the top of the state merit list and then fails the LPT is disqualified, and the post goes to the next candidate.
Why this catches so many people
A candidate from Patna who applied for a Maharashtra vacancy because the cut-off looked lower is committing to Marathi. A Bengaluru graduate who applied in West Bengal is committing to Bengali. Chasing a soft cut-off in a state whose language you do not know is not a strategy, it is a delayed disqualification.
This is also why IBPS Clerk suits candidates from Bihar and Jharkhand better than some alternatives. IBPS advertises state-wise vacancies for every state and UT including both, so a Hindi-speaking candidate can compete in their home state without the language question arising at all. The comparison is laid out in the IBPS Clerk vs SBI Clerk guide.
What to do if you are unsure
Pull out your class 10 and class 12 mark sheets now, not in January. Check whether the official language of the state you applied for appears as a subject on either. If it does, keep those mark sheets with your document set. If it does not, accept that the LPT is coming and start speaking practice with a native speaker well before the Mains result.
Category and certificate requirements
- SC, ST, OBC: caste certificate in the central government format, issued by a competent authority
- OBC: the certificate must carry the non-creamy-layer clause and fall within the validity window IBPS specifies
- EWS: Income and Asset Certificate issued by a competent authority for the relevant financial year
- PwBD: disability certificate showing benchmark disability of 40 percent or more, in the prescribed format
- Ex-servicemen: discharge certificate and the documents IBPS lists
Certificates are checked at document verification, not at the application stage. A candidate who claimed a category in August and cannot produce a valid certificate in the prescribed format later is moved to General, and in most cases that means losing the seat.
Frequently asked questions
What is the age limit for IBPS Clerk 2026?
Between 20 and 28 years as on 1 August 2026, which means born on or after 2 August 1998 and on or before 1 August 2006. SC and ST candidates get five years, OBC non-creamy layer three years, and PwBD candidates ten years of relaxation.
Can final-year students apply for IBPS Clerk?
Generally no. Your degree result has to be officially declared on or before the cut-off date given in the notification, and you must be able to produce proof of that date at verification. A pending result at that cut-off date means you are not eligible for the cycle.
Is a minimum percentage required in graduation?
No. Any bachelor's degree in any discipline from a recognised university qualifies, with no minimum marks. The discipline does not matter either.
What exactly does the local language requirement mean?
You must be able to read, write and speak the official language of the state or union territory whose vacancy you applied for. If you studied that language in class 10 or 12 and have the mark sheet, you are usually exempt from further testing. If not, you take the Language Proficiency Test after the Mains.
What happens if I fail the Language Proficiency Test?
You are disqualified, whatever your Mains score. The LPT adds nothing to your merit position, but failing it removes you from the process entirely.
Can I apply for more than one state?
No. Each candidate selects a single state or union territory in the application form, and it cannot be changed afterwards. Applying to a second state in the same cycle is not permitted.
How many attempts do I get?
There is no attempt limit for IBPS Clerk. You can appear in every cycle for which you meet the age criteria.
Do I need a computer certificate to apply?
You need either a certificate, diploma or degree in computer operations or IT, or Computer or IT studied as a subject in your school or college course. It is verified at document verification rather than at the application stage.
The check worth doing today
Take ten minutes and confirm three things on paper: your date of birth against 1 August 2026, your degree result declaration date, and whether the official language of your chosen state appears on a class 10 or 12 mark sheet.
All three are fixable problems in September and unfixable problems in February. Recruitment detail, fee and the vacancy tables are in the IBPS Clerk notification guide, what the job pays once you clear all this is in the IBPS Clerk salary guide, and the rest of the cycle sits in the IBPS Clerk complete guide.
