IBPS Clerk vs SBI Clerk 2026: Which Bank Clerk Job Should You Pick?
Two clerk-level bank recruitments ran in the same season this year. SBI advertised 9,766 Junior Associate posts under CRPD/CR/2026-27/17, and IBPS notified 11,403 Customer Service Associate posts under CRP CSA-XVI for eleven public sector banks.
Both application windows have closed. What is still live is the choice of where to put your preparation hours, because the exams are weeks apart and the papers are not as similar as most comparisons claim. SBI Prelims is on 26 September and 3 October. IBPS Prelims is on 10 and 11 October.

The dates do not clash
This is the single most useful fact in the comparison and it settles the question for most readers. SBI Prelims falls on 26 September and 3 October, IBPS Prelims on 10 and 11 October, and the Mains papers are a month and a half apart. Nothing overlaps.
So the default answer for anyone who applied to both is to prepare for both. The Prelims syllabus is identical in structure: 100 questions, 100 marks, 60 minutes, with English 30, Numerical Ability 35 and Reasoning 35. One preparation block serves both papers.
The Mains papers are not the same length
Most comparisons get this wrong, and it matters because the Mains is what decides selection in both exams.
Both carry the same four sections and the same 200 marks, but IBPS packs its paper into 35 fewer minutes. And IBPS revised its Mains this cycle: Quantitative Aptitude went from 35 questions to 40, the total from 155 to 160, and the duration from 120 minutes to 125. That puts IBPS Quant at 45 seconds per question, the tightest section in either exam.

The Bihar and Jharkhand problem
SBI's regular advertisement covers 24 states and union territories. Bihar and Jharkhand are not among them.
A candidate from Patna or Ranchi who wants SBI has to apply for a circle elsewhere, and SBI then applies no inter-circle or inter-state transfer for five years of service. Five years in a state you did not choose to live in, at clerk-level pay, is a commitment people underestimate when they apply.
IBPS advertises state-wise vacancies for every state and UT, including both.

The age trap nobody checks
The two recruitments calculate age from different reference dates, and candidates near the upper limit get caught by this every year.
IBPS Clerk computes age as on 1 August 2026, with the window running 20 to 28 years. SBI uses its own reference date stated in its advertisement. A candidate sitting within a few months of 28 can therefore be eligible for one and not the other, despite applying in the same month.

Salary, and what the gap actually means
SBI starts higher. Basic pay of Rs 26,730 with two advance increments against Rs 24,050 for IBPS, and the difference carries through DA, HRA and Special Allowance because those are calculated on basic.
An honest reading of that gap. It is real but modest in absolute terms, and for a candidate from Bihar or Jharkhand it is offset by five years of living away from home. The Prelims difference
Both papers run 100 questions in 60 minutes with 20-minute sectional locks and 0.25 negative marking. The structure is the same.
Where they differ is in how the cut-off is applied. SBI Clerk Prelims is decided on the overall cut-off. For IBPS you will find conflicting claims about whether a sectional minimum also applies, and IBPS itself publishes only a single state-wise, category-wise figure.

Who should pick only one
- You live in Bihar or Jharkhand and cannot relocate. IBPS, without hesitation. The five-year transfer lock makes SBI a different life decision, not a different job.
- You want SBI specifically and can move. Then SBI, and treat the IBPS attempt as a backup rather than splitting focus evenly.
- Your English is weak but Reasoning and Numerical are strong. Look carefully at how each exam applies its cut-off before assuming one is more forgiving.
- You are within months of the upper age limit. Check both reference dates. You may only have one option available.
A selection you cannot accept is worse than no selection. Candidates who apply everywhere and think about postings afterwards are the ones who end up declining an offer they spent a year preparing for.
Preparing for both
The overlap is large enough that one plan works. Prelims structure is identical, the Mains sections carry the same names, and General and Financial Awareness serves both.
Two adjustments are needed. Run your IBPS Quant drills at 45 seconds per question rather than the SBI rhythm, and keep the awareness reading going through October rather than pausing after the SBI Prelims.
