IBPS RRB Vacancy 2026 Out: 13,706 Posts, and Bihar-Jharkhand Took the Biggest Slice
The wait for a real number is over. IBPS released the detailed CRP RRB XV notification on 31 August 2026, and the vacancy figure is 13,706 across Office Assistant and Officer Scale I, II and III. The online form opened on 1 September and closes on 21 September 2026.
Every portal is now printing the same state table. Almost nobody is doing the one calculation that actually matters if you live in Patna, Muzaffarpur, Ranchi or Dhanbad. We did it, and the result is worth two minutes of your time.
The headline numbers, in one place
One caution before you read further. The ibps.in homepage still rendered only the older CRP RRB XIII result notice and the tentative calendar when we checked on 2 September, so the figures below come from the notification PDF as reproduced by banking portals. Open the PDF yourself on ibps.in before you pay the fee and treat that document as final.
Bihar and Jharkhand did not just grow. They ate the national increase.
Here is the comparison nobody is publishing.
Now put that against the country. The 2025 cycle finished at roughly 13,300 revised posts, so the 2026 total of 13,706 is an increase of about 400 nationally, call it three per cent.
Bihar and Jharkhand together went from 708 to 1,273. That is a gain of 565 posts in two states, against a national gain of roughly 400.
Read that again. The two states added more posts than the entire country added. Arithmetically, the rest of India is collectively down by around 150 to 160 seats, and Bihar plus Jharkhand now hold about 9.3 per cent of the whole recruitment, up from roughly 5.3 per cent last year.
This is our analysis, not an IBPS statement, and the 2025 state figures are aggregator-sourced. But the direction is not ambiguous. If you are a Hindi-belt candidate who skipped RRB last year because the seat count looked thin, that reason has expired.
One honest caveat for Bihar aspirants: Officer Scale II General Banking in Bihar is again zero, exactly as it was in 2025. If you were counting on a Scale II direct entry in your home state, that door is shut this cycle too.
Post-wise vacancy breakup
The arithmetic closes exactly: 8,183 plus 4,256 plus 1,047 for all Scale II streams plus 220 gives 13,706. That is a small but useful sign that the numbers circulating are being copied from a real PDF and not guessed.
Remember that IBPS calls these provisional. Final allotment depends on what each participating bank actually reports, and past cycles have seen revised vacancy notices weeks later.
Exam dates you should already be blocking
These dates come from the official IBPS calendar for 2026-27, and IBPS itself labels them tentative. Notice the collision on 20 December. Officer Scale I mains and the Scale II/III single exam sit on the same day, so an experienced banker eyeing both Scale I and Scale II has to choose one.
Fee, age and who can apply
Fee is Rs 850 for General, OBC and EWS candidates and Rs 175 for SC, ST, PwBD and ex-servicemen. Age relaxation follows the usual central pattern of 3 years for OBC, 5 for SC and ST and 10 for PwBD.
The requirement that trips up outstation candidates every year is local language proficiency. You must be able to read, write and speak the language of the state you apply to. For Bihar that means Hindi, for Jharkhand also Hindi, so the Hindi belt has a structural edge here that a Delhi-based Tamil or Malayalam speaker does not.
Exam pattern, section by section
Prelims for Office Assistant and Officer Scale I
Negative marking is 0.25 marks per wrong answer. The sectional timer is the real filter here. Twenty minutes for forty numerical questions is thirty seconds per question, which means simplification, approximation and quadratic equations have to be reflex, not calculation.
Mains for Office Assistant and Officer Scale I
Mains runs for 2 hours. You choose either the English paper or the Hindi paper, and that single choice is why RRB remains the friendliest bank exam for a Hindi-medium graduate from a Bihar or Jharkhand college.
Officer Scale II and III have one single online exam of 200 questions and 200 marks in 120 minutes, with no prelims. Officer posts carry an interview; Office Assistant does not, so the clerk merit list is decided purely by the mains score.
What last year's cut-offs tell you about your state
These are aggregator-reported and you should confirm them against your own scorecard or the official cut-off notice. Still, the pattern is useful. A Bihar candidate needed about 57 out of 80 to cross prelims last year while a West Bengal candidate needed nearly 66.
With Bihar Scale I posts jumping from 192 to 394, the honest expectation is that the 2026 Bihar cut-off softens rather than hardens, assuming applications do not double at the same time. That last clause matters, and nobody can promise it.
The 21 September problem for Bihar candidates
Mark this if you are in Bihar. The IBPS RRB form closes on 21 September. BPSC has indicated that the postponed TRE 4.0 application process is likely to start from 21 September as well, with a revised advertisement.
Two heavy applications, one date, and both need documents, photographs and fee payment. Do not leave the RRB form to the last day expecting a quiet portal. Finish it in the first week of September and keep 21 September free for TRE.
Bihar STET candidates have their own overlap, with that application window running until 15 September. September is genuinely crowded this year, and the students who lose seats usually lose them to a missed deadline rather than a missed question.
Salary, so you know what you are chasing
- Office Assistant: basic pay around Rs 24,050 in the scale of 24,050 to 64,480, with in-hand roughly Rs 35,000 to 37,000 depending on posting and DA.
- Officer Scale I: basic pay around Rs 48,480 in the scale of 48,480 to 85,920, with gross near Rs 80,000 and in-hand around Rs 74,000.
- Both come with DA, HRA, CCA and a pension contribution. Rural postings are the norm, which is the trade-off against a nationalised bank job.
These salary figures are aggregator-sourced and vary by bank and city class. Treat them as a range, not a payslip.
How to apply, briefly
- Go to ibps.in and open the CRP RRB XV apply-online link for your post.
- Register with a working mobile number and email; the registration number and password arrive there.
- Fill personal details, pick your state and bank preference carefully, since the merit list is state-specific.
- Upload photograph, signature, left thumb impression and a handwritten declaration in the prescribed sizes.
- Pay the fee online and download the final submitted form as a PDF.
Applying for Office Assistant and Officer Scale I separately is allowed and, for most graduates under 28, sensible. Two applications, two fees, two chances.
A 20-day plan before the exam calendar bites

The vacancy number is out and it is the highest RRB figure in recent cycles, but the more useful fact is where those posts went. Two states in the Hindi belt absorbed more than the whole national increase, and one of them, Jharkhand, more than doubled its intake.
