RRB JE 2026 Complete Guide: 4,029 Vacancies, CEN 04/2026 Dates, Pattern and Syllabus

The Railway Recruitment Boards released CEN 04/2026 for Junior Engineer and allied posts on 13 August 2026, opened the online window on 14 August 2026, and then raised the vacancy count before applications closed. If you are sitting on a diploma or a B.Tech and waiting for a stable railway job, this is the biggest technical recruitment on the table right now.

This guide puts every confirmed number in one place: the revised vacancy break-up, the application and correction dates, the CBT 1 and CBT 2 structure, the fee refund rule most candidates forget to claim, and a study plan built around a November 2026 first stage. Where a figure is still unconfirmed, you will see it flagged instead of dressed up.

Vacancy Break-Up: Where the 4,029 Posts Sit

The first notice carried 3,993 posts. A subsequent revision took the figure to 4,029 by adding 35 Chemical and Metallurgical Assistant posts and one Electrical (TRS) vacancy. Civil Engineering alone carries more than 40 per cent of the total, which changes how you should read cut-off chatter from earlier cycles.

Discipline / PostVacanciesShare of total
Civil Engineering1,63840.7%
Mechanical Engineering1,12527.9%
Electrical Engineering60014.9%
Depot Material Superintendent3248.0%
Signal and Telecommunications3077.6%
Chemical and Metallurgical Assistant350.9%
Total4,029100%

One honest caveat: a few coaching portals are still running a 4,098 figure. That number does not reconcile with the discipline break-up above, which adds up cleanly to 4,029. Treat 4,029 as the working figure and check the RRB corrigendum on your regional board's site before quoting anything else. Zone-wise splits are published board by board, so the vacancy count for Patna, Muzaffarpur, Ranchi or Prayagraj will differ from the all-India table.

RRB JE 2026 Important Dates

CBT 2 examNot yet announced

Two of those rows matter more than the rest. The fee deadline runs two days past the application deadline, so a form submitted on 13 September is still alive if payment goes through by 15 September. And the correction window is a paid, limited-attempt facility on the RRB apply portal, not a free-for-all. Photograph, signature and category are the fields candidates most often need to fix.

For a sense of how RRB timelines actually behave once a CEN closes, the RRB NTPC UG CBT 1 result timeline is a useful benchmark, and the RRB Group D result cycle shows how long the gap between exam and scorecard tends to stretch.

Eligibility: Age, Qualification and the Post-Wise Traps

Age is 18 to 33 years as on the reference date printed in CEN 04/2026. Relaxation follows the standard railway pattern: five years for SC and ST, three years for OBC-NCL, ten to fifteen years for PwBD depending on category, and length of service plus three years for ex-servicemen. Confirm the exact cut-off date from your board's PDF, because RRB has shifted this reference date between CENs before.

Qualification is where applications get rejected. The requirement is post-specific, not generic:

  • Junior Engineer (Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, S and T): a three-year diploma in the relevant engineering discipline, or B.E./B.Tech/B.Sc in Engineering in that discipline, from a recognised institution.
  • Junior Engineer (IT): PGDCA, or B.Sc in Computer Science, or B.Tech/B.E. in Information Technology or Computer Science, or equivalent.
  • Depot Material Superintendent: a diploma or degree in engineering in any discipline. This is the widest gate in the CEN, and 324 posts sit behind it.
  • Chemical and Metallurgical Assistant: B.Sc with Physics and Chemistry, or a related qualification specified in the notification. Only 35 posts, so competition per seat is brutal.

Medical standards differ by post as well. JE and DMS posts generally fall under B-2 or C-1 categories, and vision requirements are checked at the medical stage after Document Verification. Candidates with existing vision correction should read the medical annexure of the CEN carefully rather than assuming they will clear it.

Exam Pattern: CBT 1 and CBT 2

CBT 1 is a screening stage. Its marks do not carry into the final merit list. CBT 2 is the paper that decides your rank, and 100 of its 150 marks come from your own engineering discipline.

CBT 1 Structure

SubjectQuestionsMarksDuration
Mathematics303090 minutes total
General Intelligence and Reasoning2525-
General Awareness1515-
General Science3030-
Total10010090 minutes

CBT 2 Structure

SectionQuestionsMarks
General Awareness1515
Physics and Chemistry1515
Basics of Computers and Applications1010
Basics of Environment and Pollution Control1010
Technical Abilities (your discipline)100100
Total150150 marks in 120 minutes

Both papers deduct one third of a mark for a wrong answer. PwBD candidates eligible for a scribe get extra time as per the CEN provisions. Minimum qualifying percentages follow the long-standing RRB norm of 40 per cent for UR and EWS, 30 per cent for OBC-NCL and SC, and 25 per cent for ST, with relaxation possible where vacancies would otherwise go unfilled. That norm has held across recent CENs, but it is worth confirming against your own notification PDF rather than taking it from any portal, including this one.

Syllabus Break-Up That Reflects Actual Weightage

CBT 1 Mathematics (30 marks): number system, BODMAS, decimals and fractions, LCM and HCF, ratio and proportion, percentage, mensuration, time and work, time and distance, simple and compound interest, profit and loss, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, elementary statistics, square root, age calculations, calendar and clock, pipes and cistern.

CBT 1 General Intelligence and Reasoning (25 marks): analogies, alphabetical and number series, coding-decoding, mathematical operations, relationships, syllogism, jumbling, Venn diagrams, data interpretation and sufficiency, conclusions and decision making, similarities and differences, analytical reasoning, classification, directions, statement-argument and assumption.

CBT 1 General Awareness (15 marks): current affairs of the last eight to ten months, Indian geography, culture and history including the freedom struggle, Indian polity and constitution, Indian economy, environmental issues, space and technology, and general scientific developments. Railway-specific general knowledge shows up almost every cycle.

CBT 1 General Science (30 marks): Physics, Chemistry and Life Sciences at roughly Class 10 level. This is the highest-yield section for diploma holders because the concepts overlap with first-year engineering.

CBT 2 Technical Abilities (100 marks): discipline-specific. Civil candidates face engineering mechanics, surveying, building materials, concrete technology, soil mechanics, hydraulics, estimating and costing, and transportation engineering. Mechanical candidates face thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, strength of materials, theory of machines, production engineering and industrial management. Electrical candidates face basic electrical concepts, circuits, measurement, machines, transmission and distribution, and power electronics. S and T candidates face electronics, digital circuits, microprocessors, communication systems and networking.

Application Fee and the Refund Most Candidates Miss

CategoryFee paidRefund after appearing in CBT 1
Unreserved and OBCRs 500Rs 400 refunded, less bank charges
SC, ST, Ex-servicemen, PwBD, Female, Transgender, Minority, EBCRs 250Full Rs 250 refunded, less bank charges

The refund is conditional on actually appearing in CBT 1. Skip the exam and the money is gone. Refunds are credited to the bank account you enter in your application profile, so an inactive or mistyped account number is the usual reason a refund never lands. Fix it during the 16 to 25 September correction window if needed.

Selection Process, Step by Step

  1. CBT 1: screening only. Shortlisting for CBT 2 has historically been about 15 times the community-wise vacancy of a board. Marks do not carry forward.
  2. CBT 2: the merit paper. Normalised scores across shifts decide your standing.
  3. Document Verification: candidates called at roughly 1.05 times the vacancy, in merit order and post preference order.
  4. Medical Examination: post-specific standards. Failing here costs you the post even with a strong CBT 2 score.
  5. Final panel: published board-wise, based on CBT 2 normalised marks and post preferences filled at the application stage.

Because CBT 1 and CBT 2 both run in multiple shifts, raw marks are converted into normalised scores before any list is drawn. If you have never worked out what that actually does to your score, read how normalisation works across SSC, RRB and BSSC exams before you start comparing your attempt with a friend's.

What Most RRB JE Guides Get Wrong

They present old cut-offs as targets. A 2019 Civil cut-off from a board that had 300 posts tells you almost nothing about a cycle where Civil carries 1,638 posts nationally. Vacancy volume, applicant count and shift difficulty all moved. Use old cut-offs to understand the shape of the fight, not to set a number.

They treat CBT 1 marks as part of the merit list. They are not. Candidates burn months polishing General Awareness for a paper that only decides whether they sit for the real one, then walk into CBT 2 with weak Technical Abilities.

They copy a single all-India vacancy figure and ignore the board split. Your competition is inside your chosen RRB, not across India. A candidate applying to a board with 40 Electrical posts is in a different exam from one applying where there are 200.

They ignore post preference. Preference order is locked at the application stage and drives the DV call and the final allotment. Candidates who filled preferences carelessly end up rejecting a post they technically earned.

They quote figures without a date. Vacancy counts in this very CEN changed within weeks. Any number you read should carry the date it was published, or it is not usable.

A Prep Plan Built Around a November CBT 1

Counting from early September, you have roughly ten to twelve weeks before CBT 1. Here is how to spend them without pretending you have unlimited hours.

Weeks 1 to 3, foundation. Two hours daily on General Science and Mathematics, the two sections that carry 60 of the 100 CBT 1 marks. One hour on Reasoning. Thirty minutes on daily current affairs, written down, not just read. Start one hour of Technical Abilities from your discipline even now, because CBT 2 arrives faster than candidates expect.

Weeks 4 to 7, sectional grinding. Move to sectional mocks: one Maths set and one Reasoning set every alternate day, timed. Track two numbers per set, accuracy and time per question. If your accuracy is under 80 per cent, your problem is concept, not speed. Keep Technical Abilities at one hour daily and finish one complete subject of your discipline every ten days.

Weeks 8 to 10, full-length mode. Two full CBT 1 mocks per week in a 90-minute block at the same time of day your shift is likely to fall. Spend twice as long on the analysis as on the paper. Every wrong answer goes into an error log with a one-line reason: silly mistake, concept gap, or guess. By week 10 the log should be shrinking.

Final ten days. No new topics. Revise formulas, the error log, and six months of current affairs. Take two mocks only, keep the rest of the time for revision, and sleep properly. Candidates lose more marks to fatigue in a 90-minute paper than they think.

If you are also tracking other railway openings this cycle, keep an eye on the RRB ALP 2026 notification and the RRB Section Controller recruitment with 119 vacancies, both of which share large parts of the CBT 1 syllabus.

Practise on the Real Pattern, Not a Guess

Reading a pattern table is not the same as surviving 100 questions in 90 minutes with a third of a mark riding on every guess. Attempt full-length RRB JE mocks that follow the exact CBT 1 split of 30-25-15-30, get shift-wise normalised scoring, and see your section-level accuracy after each attempt. Frequently Asked Questions

How many vacancies are there in RRB JE 2026?

4,029 posts under CEN 04/2026, revised upward from the 3,993 announced on 13 August 2026. The revision added 35 Chemical and Metallurgical Assistant posts and one Electrical (TRS) vacancy. Civil Engineering carries the largest share at 1,638.

What is the last date to apply for RRB JE 2026?

Applications close on 13 September 2026, with fee payment allowed until 15 September 2026 and a correction window from 16 to 25 September 2026. Submitting the form and skipping the payment leaves your candidature incomplete.

When will the RRB JE CBT 1 exam be held?

The boards have indicated November 2026 for CBT 1. Exact dates, the exam city intimation and the admit card link were not published as of 30 August 2026. Track your regional RRB site rather than aggregator pages for the announcement.

Is there negative marking in RRB JE?

Yes. One third of a mark is deducted for each wrong answer in both CBT 1 and CBT 2. On a 100-mark CBT 1, three wrong answers wipe out one correct answer, so blind guessing across twenty questions is a measurable loss, not a gamble.

Do CBT 1 marks count in the final RRB JE merit list?

No. CBT 1 is only a screening stage that decides who sits for CBT 2. The final merit list is built from normalised CBT 2 scores, subject to Document Verification and the medical examination.

What is the age limit for RRB JE 2026?

18 to 33 years as on the reference date given in CEN 04/2026, with five years relaxation for SC and ST, three years for OBC-NCL, and larger relaxation for PwBD and ex-servicemen. Confirm the reference date from your board's PDF, since RRB has changed it between cycles.

Can a B.Tech graduate apply for RRB JE?

Yes. A B.E., B.Tech or B.Sc in Engineering in the relevant discipline is accepted alongside the three-year diploma. For Depot Material Superintendent, a diploma or degree in any engineering discipline qualifies, which is why 324 DMS posts draw applicants from every branch.

How much of the RRB JE application fee is refunded?

Unreserved and OBC candidates who pay Rs 500 get Rs 400 back after appearing in CBT 1, less bank charges. Candidates in the Rs 250 category get the full amount back on the same condition. Skipping CBT 1 forfeits the refund entirely.

Final Word

One thing worth saying that no vacancy table shows: RRB JE rewards depth in a single discipline more than any other railway exam. CBT 2 puts 100 of 150 marks inside your own branch, which means a Civil candidate who knows surveying and estimating cold can beat a candidate with better General Awareness and thinner technical ground.

So plan backwards from CBT 2, not forwards from CBT 1. Clear the screening paper with steady General Science and Mathematics work, but protect an hour a day for Technical Abilities from the first week itself. Verify every date and figure here against your regional RRB notification before you act on it, and keep the 15 September fee deadline and the 25 September correction close in your calendar.
