Last Updated: 7 October 2026 (evening). Graduate rules below are now checked against the detailed CEN 06/2026: age, date-of-birth ranges, relaxation and medical standards match it, and the typing test has been dropped for graduate posts. UG rules will be checked against CEN 07/2026 when it is published on 14 October.

RRB NTPC eligibility 2026 comes down to four checks: your age on 1 January 2027, your qualification on the closing date, your category, and your eyesight for the post you want. Get one wrong and the form goes through, the fee goes through, and the rejection arrives months later at document verification.

This year the stakes are higher. CEN 06/2026 has 3,548 graduate posts and CEN 07/2026 has 1,688 UG posts, well below last cycle. Here is every eligibility rule in one place, with the date-of-birth ranges most websites still have wrong.

RRB NTPC Eligibility 2026 at a Glance

RRB NTPC eligibility 2026: graduate posts need a bachelor's degree and age 18 to 33 years, while UG posts need 12th pass (50% marks for general candidates) and age 18 to 30, both counted on 1 January 2027. OBC-NCL gets 3 years and SC/ST 5 years of relaxation.

CategoryGraduate posts (CEN 06/2026)UG posts (CEN 07/2026)
UR / EWS18 to 33 years18 to 30 years
OBC-NCL18 to 36 years18 to 33 years
SC / ST18 to 38 years18 to 35 years
PwBD (UR / OBC / SC-ST)+10 / +13 / +15 years+10 / +13 / +15 years
QualificationBachelor's degree12th (+2) pass
Age counted on1 January 20271 January 2027

A warning on old pages: several popular sites still show 18 to 36 (Graduate) and 18 to 33 (UG). Those were the 2024 limits, which included a one-time three-year COVID relaxation. That extra relaxation is not part of the 2026 limits announced so far.

RRB NTPC Age Limit 2026: Date of Birth Ranges

RRB prints eligibility as a date-of-birth range, and that range is what the software checks. The detailed CEN 06/2026 prints the graduate ranges below. The UG ranges use the same method ("born between 2 January of reference year minus upper age and 1 January of reference year minus 18") and will be confirmed by CEN 07/2026.

CategoryGraduate: born betweenUG: born between
UR / EWS02.01.1994 and 01.01.200902.01.1997 and 01.01.2009
OBC-NCL02.01.1991 and 01.01.200902.01.1994 and 01.01.2009
SC / ST02.01.1989 and 01.01.200902.01.1992 and 01.01.2009

The graduate ranges are as printed in CEN 06/2026; the UG ranges are worked out by us until CEN 07/2026 is out. If your birthday falls in the first few days of January of a boundary year, check twice. Those are the candidates who most often discover a problem after paying the fee.

Two quick examples

  • An OBC-NCL graduate born on 15 March 1991 is inside the 02.01.1991 to 01.01.2009 range, so eligible for CEN 06/2026.
  • A UR graduate born on 20 June 1993 is outside the 02.01.1994 start, so not eligible for the graduate CEN, unless a relaxation (ex-serviceman, PwBD, railway employee and so on) applies.

RRB NTPC Age Relaxation 2026: Full Table

These are the relaxation rows RRB has used in its recent CENs (CEN 05/2024 for NTPC Graduate and CEN 09/2025, the latest). Expect the same in 2026.

CategoryUR / EWSOBC-NCLSC / ST
Community relaxationNil3 years5 years
Ex-servicemen (after 6 months of service), after deducting service from age3 years6 years8 years
PwBD10 years13 years15 years
Serving railway staff (Group C and erstwhile Group D), casual labour and substitutes with at least 3 years of serviceUp to 40 yearsUp to 43 yearsUp to 45 years
Staff of railway quasi-administrative offices (canteens, co-operative societies, institutes)Up to 5 years or service length, whichever is lessUp to 5 years or service length, whichever is lessUp to 5 years or service length, whichever is less
Widowed, divorced or judicially separated women not remarriedUp to 35 yearsUp to 38 yearsUp to 40 years

One rule people miss: relaxations do not add up. If you qualify on more than one ground, RRB gives you the highest single relaxation, not the total. An OBC ex-serviceman, for example, gets the ex-servicemen row for OBC (6 years after deducting service), not 3 plus 6.

PwBD relaxation also depends on the post. Only posts identified as suitable for your disability in Annexure-A of the CEN count, so check that table before giving post preferences.

The 12th 50% rule for UG posts

The 50% aggregate condition in 12th is not insisted upon for SC, ST, PwBD and ex-servicemen candidates, or for candidates with a higher qualification such as graduation. So a general-category graduate with 45% in 12th can still apply for UG posts, because the degree is the higher qualification.

Final-year students and the crucial date

You must hold the qualification by the closing date of the application: 6 November 2026 for graduate posts and 13 November 2026 for UG posts. RRB's CENs say candidates "waiting for final results" should not apply. If your final-semester result comes after the closing date, you are not eligible for this cycle, even if you pass later.

Can Graduates Apply for RRB NTPC UG Posts?

Yes. A degree satisfies the 12th-pass condition, and graduates are exempt from the 50% rule. Many graduates fill both forms: same syllabus, two exams, two sets of vacancies. The reverse is not true. A 12th-pass candidate cannot apply for graduate posts.

Which posts suit you better depends on pay level, work and your cut-off chances. We compare them in RRB NTPC graduate vs undergraduate: posts, eligibility and cut-off difference, and the full vacancy picture is in the RRB NTPC notification 2026 pillar guide.

Typing Skill: Who Needs It in 2026?

Four posts carry "cum Typist" in their name: Senior Clerk and JAA (graduate), Junior Clerk and Accounts Clerk (UG). The 2026 graduate notice changes the rule. CEN 06/2026 has dispensed with the typing skill test for Senior Clerk and JAA. It adds that candidates are still expected to have basic computer proficiency, which will be assessed after joining, and that unsatisfactory performance may delay confirmation or promotion. For the UG posts, past CENs had the qualifying test below; whether CEN 07/2026 keeps it will be clear on 14 October.

  • Past UG speed: 30 words per minute in English or 25 words per minute in Hindi.
  • Typed on a personal computer, without editing tools or spell check.
  • It is qualifying only. Faster typing does not add marks to your merit.
  • Past CENs allowed exemption for candidates with blindness or low vision, cerebral palsy or locomotor disability of 40% or more.

Even graduate candidates should not drop computer practice: the skill is checked after joining. If you are also applying for the UG typist posts and type below 25 wpm today, start now. Two months of 20 minutes a day is usually enough to clear the bar comfortably.

RRB NTPC Medical Standards 2026: Post-wise Eyesight Rules

Medical fitness is the eligibility check most aspirants ignore until it is too late. Each NTPC post has a fixed medical category, and the eyesight rule is the part that rejects people. CEN 06/2026 keeps A-2 for Goods Train Manager, B-2 for CCTS and C-2 for Senior Clerk and JAA.

PostMedical standardDistance vision
Goods Train ManagerA-26/9, 6/9 without glasses
Chief Commercial cum Ticket SupervisorB-26/9, 6/12 with or without glasses (lens power up to 4D)
Senior Clerk cum Typist, JAAC-26/12, nil with or without glasses
Trains Clerk (UG)A-36/9, 6/9 with or without glasses (lens power up to 2D)
Commercial cum Ticket Clerk (UG)B-26/9, 6/12 with or without glasses (lens power up to 4D)
Junior Clerk, Accounts Clerk (UG)C-26/12, nil with or without glasses
  • A-2 also needs near vision of Sn 0.6 in each eye without glasses and a pass in colour vision, binocular vision, night vision and mesopic vision tests.
  • A-3 also needs colour, binocular and night vision tests.
  • LASIK: candidates who have had LASIK or similar refractive surgery have not been eligible for A-2 and A-3 posts, but are eligible for B-2 and C-2 posts.

Our honest advice: if you wear glasses, get a proper eye test before you rank Goods Train Manager or Trains Clerk. You can still apply, but put B-2 and C-2 posts in your preference list too. Our RRB NTPC salary and post preference strategy helps you order them.

How Many Attempts Are Allowed in RRB NTPC?

There is no limit on attempts. The CEN does not cap the number of times you can apply; only the age limit does. A UR graduate born in 1997, for instance, can sit every NTPC graduate cycle until crossing the upper age for that cycle's reference date.

Nationality and Other Conditions

  • Nationality: a citizen of India, or a subject of Nepal or Bhutan, or a Tibetan refugee who came before 1 January 1962 to settle permanently, or a person of Indian origin who migrated from certain listed countries to settle in India. Categories other than Indian citizens need an eligibility certificate from the Government of India.
  • Domicile: none. Any eligible Indian can apply to any one RRB.
  • Debarred candidates: anyone debarred by an RRB or RRC, for life or for a period not yet over, cannot apply.
  • One application: only one RRB per CEN. Multiple applications lead to rejection of all.

Category Certificates: A Trap for Bihar and Jharkhand Aspirants

Railway jobs are central government jobs. Reservation follows the central lists and central certificate formats, not the state ones.

  • OBC-NCL: your caste must be in the central OBC list for your state, and the certificate must be in the central format given in the CEN, with the non-creamy-layer status valid for the period the CEN specifies. A certificate made for a Bihar or Jharkhand state job may not be accepted.
  • EWS: you need the central Income and Asset Certificate for the financial year the CEN mentions.
  • SC/ST: certificate in the prescribed format; it is also needed for the sleeper-class railway pass to exam centres.

If your certificate is in the wrong format at DV, you can lose the reserved seat and be considered only as UR, and only if you meet UR conditions like the age limit. With UR cut-offs higher, that alone can cost a seat. Get the right certificate made in October, not in the week before DV.

RRB NTPC Eligibility 2026: FAQs

What is the age limit for RRB NTPC 2026?

18 to 33 years for graduate posts and 18 to 30 years for UG posts, as on 1 January 2027, for UR and EWS. OBC-NCL gets 3 more years and SC/ST 5 more years.

Can final-year students apply for RRB NTPC 2026?

No. You must hold the qualification by the closing date (6 November 2026 for graduate, 13 November 2026 for UG). Candidates awaiting results should not apply.

Is 50% marks in 12th compulsory for RRB NTPC?

Only for UG posts and only for general candidates. SC, ST, PwBD and ex-servicemen candidates, and anyone with a higher qualification like graduation, are exempt.

How many attempts are there in RRB NTPC?

There is no attempt limit. You can apply in every cycle as long as you are within the age limit for that cycle.

Can a 12th pass apply for RRB NTPC graduate posts?

No. Graduate posts under CEN 06/2026 need a bachelor's degree. A 12th-pass candidate can apply for UG posts under CEN 07/2026.

What is the eyesight requirement for Goods Train Manager?

Goods Train Manager is an A-2 post: 6/9 vision in each eye without glasses, near vision Sn 0.6 without glasses, and colour, binocular, night and mesopic vision tests. Candidates with LASIK have not been eligible.

Is there any age relaxation for railway employees?

Yes. Serving Group C and erstwhile Group D railway staff, casual labour and substitutes with at least 3 years of service can apply up to 40 (UR/EWS), 43 (OBC-NCL) or 45 (SC/ST) years of age.

Final Word on RRB NTPC Eligibility 2026

RRB NTPC eligibility 2026 is not hard to meet, but it is easy to misread. The three mistakes we see every cycle are using last year's age limit, applying with a result still awaited, and ranking an A-2 post without checking eyesight.

Spend ten minutes today with your 10th certificate, your category certificate and the tables above. If something is missing, you still have until 6 November to fix it, which is far easier than arguing a case at DV.
