Bihar and Jharkhand: The Map Changed in 2025

Under the government's One State, One RRB policy, Bihar Gramin Bank came into existence on 1 May 2025 by merging Dakshin Bihar Gramin Bank and Uttar Bihar Gramin Bank. It is sponsored by Punjab National Bank, headquartered in Patna, and operates roughly 2,885 branches across all 38 districts of Bihar. Jharkhand went the same way, with its regional rural banks consolidated into Jharkhand Gramin Bank.
What that means in plain terms: a Bihar candidate is no longer choosing between two gramin banks with two separate merit lists. There is one state bank, one merit list, one cut-off. Competition concentrates. But so does the branch network, which means a Motihari or Bhagalpur posting is now drawn from a pool that covers the whole state rather than one half of it.

Eligibility: Who Can Actually Apply
Office Assistant (Multipurpose)
A bachelor's degree in any discipline from a recognised university. No experience needed. Computer knowledge is listed as desirable rather than mandatory, and proficiency in the local language of the state you apply to is required.
Officer Scale-I (Assistant Manager)
A bachelor's degree in any discipline, with preference for candidates who studied agriculture, horticulture, forestry, animal husbandry, veterinary science, agricultural engineering, pisciculture, accountancy, law, economics or management. No prior experience is demanded for Scale-I.
Officer Scale-II and Scale-III
These are experience posts. Scale-II General Banking Officer and the specialist streams (IT, CA, Law, Treasury, Marketing, Agriculture) typically ask for a degree with 50% marks plus one to five years of relevant experience depending on the stream. Scale-III sits at the top with the longest experience requirement. If you are a fresher, Scale-I and Office Assistant are your two doors.
The Local Language Rule Nobody Reads
Every RRB requires proficiency in the official language of the state. For Bihar and Jharkhand that means Hindi. This is checked at the document verification and language proficiency stage, and candidates have been rejected here after clearing Mains. If you studied in Hindi medium up to matriculation, you are usually covered by the certificate route. If you did not, read the detailed notification's language clause carefully before you pay the fee.
Age Limit as on 1 September 2026
Standard relaxations apply: five years for SC and ST, three years for OBC non-creamy layer, ten years for PwBD, with separate provisions for ex-servicemen and widows or divorced women. The upper age for Officer Scale-I is written as "below 30", not "up to 30", and that one-word difference has cost people their form.
Exam Pattern
Prelims (Office Assistant and Officer Scale-I)
Both sections are separately timed. You cannot borrow five minutes from Reasoning to finish Numerical Ability. Negative marking is 0.25 marks per wrong answer. Prelims marks are only for shortlisting; they do not carry into the final merit.
Mains
Two hours, composite timing, 0.25 negative marking. You choose either English or Hindi as your language paper, which is a genuine advantage for Hindi-medium candidates from Bihar and Jharkhand. Mains marks decide the Office Assistant merit list outright. For Officer Scale-I, Mains is followed by an interview, and the usual weightage split is 80:20 between Mains and interview.
Officer Scale-II and III
No prelims. A single online exam on 20 December 2026, then an interview, then final selection. Scale-II specialists sit a professional knowledge paper on top of the general sections.
Application Fee
Payment is online only, through debit card, credit card, net banking, IMPS or mobile wallet. The fee window closes with the application window on 21 September 2026. Fees are non-refundable, so do not pay before you have confirmed your eligibility for the post you selected.
Salary: What the Job Actually Pays
Gross for Officer Scale-I works out to roughly ₹80,000 before deductions, made up of basic plus DA, HRA and special allowance. In-hand varies by posting because HRA changes with the branch location and NPS pulls roughly 10% off. A rural branch posting in Bihar will land lower on HRA than a Patna posting.

Cut-Off Reality Check
The 2025 Officer Scale-I prelims cut-offs give you a target rather than a hope. Bihar closed at 56.75 for General and EWS. Jharkhand closed at 57.25. West Bengal, by contrast, sat at 65.75 and Assam at 52.
So out of 80 marks in 45 minutes, you needed roughly 57 to survive the first gate in Bihar. That is about 60 correct attempts with reasonable accuracy. It is achievable, and it is also not a number you reach by half-hearted preparation in November. - Register with a working email and mobile number. The provisional registration number and password arrive there.
- Upload photograph, signature, left thumb impression and a handwritten declaration in the specified dimensions. Get these ready before you start.
- Fill in personal details, qualification, category and, critically, your state and post preference.
- Pay the fee online and download the confirmation page.
- Save a PDF of the final submitted form. You will need it at document verification.
The state choice is the single most consequential field on the form. You compete only within the state you pick, against that state's cut-off, for that state's vacancies. A candidate from Gaya who picks Bihar competes at 56.75; the same candidate picking West Bengal would have needed 65.75 last year. Choose the state where you can genuinely work and where your language proficiency holds.
An 80-Day Plan That Fits the Calendar
You have roughly 80 days to Officer Scale-I prelims and about 95 to Office Assistant prelims. That is enough if you use it in blocks.
- Days 1 to 30: Close the syllabus. Reasoning puzzles and seating arrangement, since they carry the largest block of prelims marks. Arithmetic and Data Interpretation on the quant side. Do not touch General Awareness yet.
- Days 31 to 55: Speed conversion. Two sectional drills a day at exactly 25 and 20 minutes, matching the real sectional timer. Two full prelims mocks a week.

Four Mistakes That Cost People This Exam
- Applying to a low-cut-off state you cannot live in. Selection means a posting there. Rejecting the posting means losing the selection.
- Ignoring Computer Knowledge in Mains. It carries only 20 marks but 40 questions, and it is the fastest scoring section in the paper. Two weeks of Lucent-level revision closes it.
- Sitting the language paper in English out of habit. If your Hindi is stronger, take Hindi. The marks are identical and nobody sees which one you picked.
- Waiting for the detailed notification to start studying. The exam dates are already out. The vacancy number does not change the syllabus.
