BPSC TRE Salary 2026: In Hand Pay, DA and Allowances

A Bihar school teacher recruited through TRE draws a basic pay between Rs 25,000 and Rs 32,000 depending on level, plus dearness allowance currently at 60%, plus house rent and other allowances at state rates.

That second number is the one people miss. DA at 60% adds Rs 15,000 to Rs 19,200 a month before a single allowance is counted. If you are reading an older article that still says 53%, its in-hand figure is short by several thousand rupees.

Basic pay by level

LevelPostBasic pay per month
Class 1-5Primary TeacherRs 25,000
Class 6-8Middle School TeacherRs 28,000
Class 9-10Secondary TeacherRs 31,000
Class 11-12Senior Secondary TeacherRs 32,000

The gap between the top and bottom level is Rs 7,000 of basic. Over a career, with DA and increments applied on top of a higher base, that gap widens considerably. It is a reason to apply at the highest level you are actually eligible for rather than the one with the easiest paper.

Dearness allowance at 60%

DA stands at 60% with effect from January 2026, per the Finance Ministry office memorandum dated 22 April 2026. DA is calculated on basic pay.

LevelBasicDA at 60%Basic plus DA
Class 1-5Rs 25,000Rs 15,000Rs 40,000
Class 6-8Rs 28,000Rs 16,800Rs 44,800
Class 9-10Rs 31,000Rs 18,600Rs 49,600
Class 11-12Rs 32,000Rs 19,200Rs 51,200

These four figures are arithmetic, not estimates. Basic plus DA is the floor of your monthly gross, before house rent allowance and other heads are added.

DA is also the part of your pay that moves on its own. It is revised periodically without any action from you, which is why a teacher appointed at Rs 25,000 basic today is not earning Rs 25,000 in any meaningful sense.

What sits on top of basic plus DA

  • House Rent Allowance, paid at Bihar government rates that vary by the city category of your posting. Patna draws a higher rate than a rural block.
  • Medical allowance, as admissible under state rules.
  • Other allowances notified by the state from time to time, including any travel or conveyance head applicable to your posting.

We are not printing a rupee figure for HRA here. The rate depends on your posted city category and on the state order in force when you join, and a made up number would be worse than no number. Your first salary slip will show the exact head, and your DDO can confirm the applicable rate before that.

What gets deducted

  • Pension contribution under the contributory pension scheme, calculated on basic plus DA. The employee share is typically around 10%, with the state contributing its own share separately.
  • Professional tax, as levied by the state.
  • Income tax, if your total annual income crosses the exemption limit after deductions.

A useful mental model. Take basic plus DA from the table above, add HRA for your posting, and subtract roughly a tenth of basic plus DA for pension. That lands you close to your in hand figure without pretending to a precision nobody can give you before the posting order.

Job profile and working conditions

A TRE appointed teacher is a state government employee of the Education Department, posted to a government school in one of the districts you selected in your form.

  • Teaching the subject and level you were appointed for, with the classroom load set by school strength.
  • Evaluation, record keeping and the reporting the department requires.
  • Election duty, census duty and other government assignments, which teachers in Bihar are routinely deputed for.
  • Mid day meal supervision and school administration support, more common at primary level.

Retirement age is 60. The post carries the leave, pension and service protections of state government service, which is the substantive reason 32,388 posts draw the response they do in Bihar.

The annual figure

Monthly numbers understate how the levels separate. Here is basic plus DA over twelve months, again as plain arithmetic and again before allowances.

LevelBasic plus DA per monthOver 12 months
Class 1-5Rs 40,000Rs 4,80,000
Class 6-8Rs 44,800Rs 5,37,600
Class 9-10Rs 49,600Rs 5,95,200
Class 11-12Rs 51,200Rs 6,14,400

The distance between primary and senior secondary is Rs 1,34,400 a year before HRA, and that is at joining, on the narrowest version of the gap.

What the first year actually looks like

Two things surprise new appointees, and neither shows up in a salary table.

The first is the posting. District preferences are honoured against vacancy, so a candidate who filled 38 districts may well be posted to a block far from home. Rent, travel and the cost of running two households eat into the in hand figure in a way no calculator shows.

The second is the gap between joining and the first full salary credit. Documentation, DDO allotment and payroll entry take time in any state department. Keep two months of expenses aside before you join, which is advice every serving teacher in Bihar will give you and almost no article prints.

Career growth

Pay does not stay at the joining figure. Three things move it upward over a career.

  1. Annual increments on basic pay, which compound because DA is calculated on the revised basic.
  2. DA revisions, which have taken the rate from earlier levels to the current 60%.
  3. Promotion to senior teaching and administrative posts such as Headmaster, through the department's own promotion and separate recruitment channels.

This is where the level you enter at matters most. A Class 11-12 teacher starting at Rs 32,000 basic and a Class 1-5 teacher starting at Rs 25,000 are not separated by Rs 7,000 for thirty years. They are separated by Rs 7,000 compounded by every increment and every DA revision that follows.

Is the pay worth the preparation

An honest answer. For a candidate weighing TRE against private school teaching in Bihar, the basic plus DA floor at every level clears what most private schools in the state pay, and the pension, leave and job security are not comparable at all.

For a candidate weighing TRE against a bank PO or SSC CGL posting, the starting gross is in a similar band while the postings are rural and the duty list is longer. The genuine advantage is that you stay in your home state, and for a large number of Bihar aspirants that is the whole point.

For the post counts behind each level, see post aur vacancy detail. Check which level you can actually apply for on the eligibility page, and the BPSC TRE complete guide covers the rest of the cycle.

Frequently asked questions

What is the BPSC TRE teacher salary in 2026?

Basic pay is Rs 25,000 for Class 1-5, Rs 28,000 for Class 6-8, Rs 31,000 for Class 9-10 and Rs 32,000 for Class 11-12, plus DA at 60% and allowances at state rates.

What is the current DA rate for Bihar teachers?

60%, effective from January 2026 as per the Finance Ministry office memorandum dated 22 April 2026. Articles still quoting 53% are out of date.

What is the in hand salary of a BPSC TRE primary teacher?

Basic plus DA works out to Rs 40,000 a month for Class 1-5. House rent and other allowances are added on top, and pension contribution and professional tax are deducted, so the exact in hand figure depends on your posting.

Which TRE level has the highest salary?

Class 11-12, at Rs 32,000 basic, which becomes Rs 51,200 with DA at 60% before allowances.

Is there a pension for BPSC TRE teachers?

Yes, under the contributory pension scheme, with contributions calculated on basic plus DA.

What is the retirement age for a Bihar school teacher?

60 years.

Do TRE teachers get HRA?

Yes, at Bihar government rates that depend on the city category of your posting. Confirm the applicable rate for your district with your DDO at joining.

Does salary increase after joining?

Yes, through annual increments on basic pay, periodic DA revisions, and promotion to senior posts. Since DA is calculated on basic, every increment raises the DA component too.

Do TRE teachers get transfers?

Transfer policy is set by the Education Department and applies to appointed teachers under the rules in force. It is not a reason to fill a narrow district list in the form, since a transfer request after appointment is a far better position to be in than a selection you missed for want of a district choice.

Is the TRE salary the same across all districts?

Basic pay and DA are identical everywhere. What varies is house rent allowance, which follows the city category of your posting, so a teacher in Patna and one in a rural block at the same level draw the same basic and DA but a different HRA.

Final word

Salary articles for this exam mostly fail in one specific way. They print a basic pay table, apply an old DA rate, invent an HRA figure and present the total as your in hand pay.

The two numbers you can rely on before a posting order are your basic and your basic plus DA. Everything else depends on where you are posted, and you choose that, partly, when you fill 38 district preferences on the form.
