SSC CHSL Eligibility 2026: Age Limit, Qualification and Relaxation
SSC CHSL eligibility for 2026 comes down to three checks: your age on 1 August 2026, your 12th result by 7 October 2026, and your nationality. The Staff Selection Commission uploaded the notice on 7 September 2026 for about 2,536 tentative vacancies. Many candidates lose a selection at document verification over a misread rule, not low marks. This page settles each rule with examples.

SSC CHSL 2026 Eligibility at a Glance
Nationality: Who Can Apply
Para 4 allows an Indian citizen, a subject of Nepal or Bhutan, or a person of Indian origin who migrated from specified countries (Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, some East African countries, Vietnam) to settle in India. The last groups need a Government of India eligibility certificate before any appointment offer. For almost every reader, Indian citizenship settles it.
SSC CHSL Age Limit 2026
The SSC CHSL age limit is 18 to 27 years, counted on 1 August 2026. In date terms, an unreserved (UR) candidate must be born not before 2 August 1999 and not later than 1 August 2008. Both of those dates are inside the window. The day before the start and the day after the end are outside it.
Worked example 1: born on 1 August 1999
Take a hypothetical UR candidate, Ravi, born on 1 August 1999. The window opens on 2 August 1999, so Ravi misses it by one day and is not eligible as UR. If Ravi were OBC, he would get 3 extra years, which moves his earliest allowed birth date back to 2 August 1996, and he would be comfortably inside.
Worked example 2: born on 2 August 2008
Now take a hypothetical candidate, Neha, born on 2 August 2008. The latest allowed birth date is 1 August 2008, so Neha is one day too young. There is no relaxation on the lower limit for any category, so she will have to wait for a later cycle.

Para 5.2 gives relaxation on the upper age limit only. The last column is our own arithmetic: 27 plus the relaxation years, or the fixed ceiling where the notice gives one.
Codes follow the notice, which skips code 07. For codes 10 and 11, service is counted up to the closing date, 7 October 2026.
By simple arithmetic, the earliest allowed birth dates are: OBC 2 August 1996, SC/ST 2 August 1994, PwBD (UR) 2 August 1989. EWS is not in the table, so EWS candidates follow the UR limit of 27.
How the Ex-Servicemen rule works
ESM relaxation is calculated in two steps. First, subtract your total military service from your actual age on 1 August 2026. Then check whether the result is within 27 plus 3, which is 30 years.
A made-up example: a UR ex-serviceman aged 38 has served 10 years. After deduction he is 28, below 30, so he is within the limit. With only 6 years of service, his figure would be 32, which is over.
- Serving personnel qualify if they complete their engagement within one year of 7 October 2026.
- An ESM already in a regular Group C or D civil job through ESM reservation generally cannot claim ESM reservation or fee concession again.
- Sons, daughters and dependents of ex-servicemen get no age relaxation.
Your date of birth comes from the Matriculation certificate
SSC accepts the date of birth recorded in your Matriculation or Secondary (10th) certificate, and it will not accept a later request to change it. If your Aadhaar or another ID shows a different date, the 10th certificate still wins. Fill the form exactly as your 10th certificate reads, including the spelling of your name and your parents' names.
SSC CHSL Qualification: 12th Pass Rules
Para 8 sets the SSC 10+2 eligibility rule. For LDC/JSA, and for DEO or DEO Grade A in most offices, a 12th pass or equivalent from a recognised Board or University in any stream is enough.
The SSC CHSL DEO qualification is stricter in three places. For DEO or DEO Grade A in the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, the Staff Selection Commission and the Ministry of Culture, you need 12th in the Science stream with Mathematics as a subject.
Which stream can apply for what
A Commerce student can still aim for DEO posts, just not in those three departments. SSC may also keep separate cut-offs for these three groups of posts.
Appearing in 12th? Read This Carefully
Students who have appeared in 12th can apply. But the notice is blunt: your result must be declared by the Board on or before 7 October 2026, and you must be declared pass. "Mere processing of the result" by that date does not count.
Here is what that means for you:
- If you passed in the regular exam and have your marksheet, you are fine.
- If you took a supplementary or compartment exam, find out from your Board when that result will be declared. If it is declared after 7 October 2026, you do not meet the rule, even if you pass.
- If unsure, do not guess. A wrong claim can get you cancelled at DV after clearing both tiers.
Keep proof of your result's declaration date. At DV, that document is what protects you.
Open, Distance and Online Qualifications
Paras 8.4 and 8.5 deal with qualifications earned through Open and Distance Learning (ODL) or online mode. Degrees, diplomas and certificates from recognised universities through ODL count for Central Government jobs only if they were approved by the Distance Education Bureau of UGC for the relevant period. You must show that approval at DV.
The UGC (ODL and Online Programmes) Regulations, 2020, as amended, also apply. For a 12th-level exam like CHSL, the takeaway is simple: make sure the Board that issued your 12th is recognised.
Equivalent qualification certificate
If your qualification is "equivalent" to 12th, produce an Equivalence Certificate (order number and date) from the competent authority at DV. The User Department, not SSC, takes the final call.
Post-Specific Rules You Should Not Ignore
BRO LDC: male candidates only
Only male candidates are eligible for LDC vacancies in the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), if any are reported. BRO also has a Physical Efficiency Test, region-wise physical standards and medical standards, all in Annexure XVI. The medical exam is done by a Medical Board nominated by HQ DGBR, not by SSC.
The allotment rule
Posts are allotted on merit and preference. If you get a post and fail its physical, medical or educational standard, your candidature is rejected; you do not move to your next preference. So read Annexure XVI before you put BRO in your list, and do not list a DEO post in the three named departments if you lack Science with Maths.
PwBD suitability
Para 3.3 lists suitable disabilities per post. LDC/JSA includes blind and low vision candidates; the DEO list includes low vision but not blind. Check the full table before choosing posts.
Documents You Will Need at Document Verification
DV is conducted by the User Departments after the final result, not by SSC. Para 16.5 lists these documents:
- Matriculation or Secondary certificate
- 12th marksheet or provisional certificate
- Equivalence order or letter, if you claim an equivalent qualification
- Caste or category certificate, if reserved
- PwBD certificate in the required format, if applicable
- For ESM: undertaking (Annexure VIII), Annexure VII certificate if serving, discharge certificate
- Certificate for any age relaxation claimed
- No Objection Certificate, if already in a Government job or undertaking
- Name change proof, if your name changed after matriculation
- Any other document specified in the Admission Certificate for DV
Certificates in a non-prescribed format are liable to be rejected, so check your category certificate format now.
Fee Eligibility: Who Pays Rs 100

No. The 2026 notice gives EWS neither. EWS men pay Rs 100 and follow the UR age limit.
Can women apply for BRO LDC?
No. Only male candidates are eligible for BRO LDC vacancies, if any are reported. Women can apply for all other CHSL posts.
