SSC GD Eligibility 2027: Age Limit, Qualification, Relaxation and Nationality

Most SSC GD rejections do not happen in the exam hall. They happen at Document Verification, when a candidate's date of birth misses the cut-off by eleven days or the 10th marksheet carries a date after the reckoning date.

Eligibility is also the one part of this exam that does not change when the notification arrives. Age band, qualification, relaxation rules and nationality clauses stay stable cycle after cycle. So you can settle your eligibility today and only confirm the reckoning date when SSC publishes the 2027 notice.

Eligibility in one table

ConditionRequirement
QualificationClass 10 (Matriculation) pass from a recognised Board or University
Age (2026 cycle reference)18 to 23 years as on 01-01-2026
Birth window (2026 cycle)Not before 02-01-2003 and not later than 01-01-2008
NationalityIndian citizen, or other categories specified in the notice
RelaxationSC/ST, OBC, ESM and other categories as per government norms
Physical standardsChecked later at PST, not at application

The 2027 reckoning date will be stated in the notification. Going by the last cycle, expect it to be 1 January of the exam year.

Educational qualification: exactly what the notice says

The 2026 notification wording is worth reading carefully: candidates must have passed the Matriculation or 10th Class Examination from a recognised Board or University as on or before the cut-off date.

Three practical consequences follow.

  • A higher qualification is fine. Graduates apply for SSC GD in large numbers, and nothing stops them.
  • Your 10th result must exist by the cut-off date. A candidate whose result is declared in March, after a 1 January cut-off, is not eligible for that cycle.
  • Open school boards such as NIOS count, as long as the board is recognised.

Keep the marksheet and the passing certificate together. At Document Verification the CAPF board looks at the date printed on the certificate, not at when you sat the exam.

Age limit and how the reckoning date works

In the 2026 cycle the band was 18 to 23 years as on 01-01-2026, which translated to a birth window of 02-01-2003 to 01-01-2008. Notice that the upper limit is tight. SSC GD is a young person's exam, and unlike CGL there is no long runway of attempts.

The reckoning date is not the exam date and not the application date. It is a fixed date named in the notice, and your age is calculated only against that.

Work out your own position with the certificate in hand. If your date of birth is within a month of the boundary, check it twice before paying the fee.

Category-wise age relaxation

Relaxation follows standard central government norms. The figures below are the usual pattern, and the exact table for 2027 will come with the notification.

CategoryRelaxation in upper age limit
SC / ST5 years
OBC (non-creamy layer)3 years
Ex-servicemen3 years after deducting military service rendered
URNo relaxation
EWSNo relaxation, reservation only

Two points aspirants get wrong every year.

First, EWS gives you reservation, not extra age. Candidates often assume both come together.

Second, an OBC candidate needs a valid non-creamy-layer certificate in the prescribed central government format, issued within the validity window the notice specifies. A state-format certificate is the single most common reason OBC claims are downgraded at verification, and a downgraded claim means you are judged at UR standard.

What happens when a category claim fails

This is worth its own section because the consequence is severe and the official result sheets show it. In the 2025 final result, 2,090 EWS, 1,913 SC, 998 ST and 8,902 OBC male candidates were selected at UR standard. Those candidates scored enough to survive without their category advantage.

Most do not. If your certificate is rejected, your normalised score is measured against the UR cut-off of your state, which in states like Haryana or Madhya Pradesh sat above 144 marks in that cycle. Get the paperwork right in September, not in the verification queue.

Nationality and domicile

A candidate must be an Indian citizen, or belong to the specific categories the notice lists, which usually include subjects of Nepal and Bhutan and certain persons of Indian origin who have migrated from named countries, subject to an eligibility certificate.

Domicile deserves attention because SSC GD vacancies are distributed state-wise, with further reservation for candidates from border districts and Naxal or militancy affected districts. Your state and district decide which vacancy pool you compete in, and the cut-off differences are wide.

Take the 2025 final result. A general-area UR male candidate needed roughly 144 marks in Haryana, about 128 in Bihar, about 120 in Jharkhand and about 77 in Kerala. Same exam, different pools. The full table is in SSC GD Cut Off.

Also note the migration rule. If an SC, ST or OBC candidate migrates from the state of origin to another state and chooses to take reservation benefit from the state of origin, the claim is considered in that reserved category. Otherwise the candidate is considered as UR from the domicile state.

Female candidates

Female vacancies are a small share of the total, and that shapes the cut-off. In the 2026 cycle, 2,020 of 25,487 posts were reserved for women, and in the 2025 cycle 4,932 female candidates were finally recommended out of 50,047.

Eligibility itself is the same: Class 10 pass, same age band, same relaxation rules. What differs is the physical standard, a 1.6 km run in 8 minutes 30 seconds and a height requirement of 157 cm in the general category, with no chest measurement. Those tables sit in SSC GD Physical Test PET PST.

Ex-servicemen

ESM candidates get age relaxation after deducting military service rendered, and they are exempt from the Physical Efficiency Test. They still appear for PST measurements.

The ESM cut-off is also visibly lower. In the 2025 final result the SSF male ESM cut-off was 104.50641 against 150.75218 for UR in the same force. That is not a small gap, and it is a reason for eligible ESM candidates to file the claim properly.

What eligibility does not include

Height, chest and weight are not application-stage conditions. Nobody stops you from applying at 165 cm. The check happens at PST, conducted by the CAPFs, and that is where the measurement decides your fate.

The same goes for medical fitness. Vision, colour perception, tattoo placement and BMI are examined at DME, after the CBE result. Details are in SSC GD Medical Standards.

Honest advice here. If you are 166 cm and in the general category with no relaxation, applying is still your right, but plan your preparation knowing the PST standard is 170 cm. Do not discover this in the measurement line.

Documents to keep ready before the notification

  • Class 10 marksheet and passing certificate, with a clearly printed date
  • Aadhaar or another photo identity document
  • Category certificate in central government format, valid as on the cut-off date
  • Domicile or residence proof for the state you claim
  • Border district or Naxal-affected district certificate, if applicable
  • NCC certificate, if you hold one, since bonus marks are added to the normalised score
  • Discharge book and service certificate for ESM candidates
  • Recent passport-size photograph and signature in the specified format

The NCC line matters. NCC bonus marks are applied on top of normalised marks before merit is drawn, which in an exam decided at five decimal places can be the difference between selection and the waiting list.

Quick check by candidate profile

Three situations come up again and again in comments and Telegram groups.

You passed 10th in 2026 and turn 18 in December 2026. Your age is measured on the reckoning date, so if that date is 1 January 2027 you are eligible. If the notice sets an earlier date, you are not. Wait for the notice before assuming.

You are 24 and in the general category. The upper limit was 23 in the last cycle with no UR relaxation, so SSC GD is likely closed for you. Bihar Police, state police recruitment and Railway Group D run wider age bands and are the practical alternatives.

You hold an OBC certificate issued in 2022. Non-creamy-layer certificates carry a validity period. Get a fresh one in the central government format before the application window opens, because renewing it during a verification queue is not possible.

Mistakes that cost candidates a cycle

  • Filling the category as OBC while holding only a caste certificate, without the non-creamy-layer clause
  • Claiming a border district or Naxal-affected district pool without the district certificate to back it
  • Entering a name spelling in the form that differs from the 10th certificate
  • Uploading an NCC certificate late, after the bonus marks stage has closed
  • Assuming the previous cycle's reckoning date applies to the new one

None of these is about knowledge. They are about paperwork done two weeks before the form opens instead of on the last night.

FAQs

What is the minimum qualification for SSC GD?

Class 10 or Matriculation pass from a recognised Board or University, completed by the cut-off date stated in the notification.

Can a candidate appearing in Class 10 apply?

No. The notice requires the candidate to have passed as on or before the cut-off date, so a result declared after that date does not qualify for that cycle.

What is the age limit for SSC GD 2027?

SSC will confirm it in the notification. In the 2026 cycle it was 18 to 23 years as on 01-01-2026.

How much age relaxation do SC and ST candidates get?

Five years in the upper age limit, as per government norms, subject to a valid certificate.

Does EWS get age relaxation in SSC GD?

No. EWS provides reservation in vacancies but no relaxation in the upper age limit.

Is there a minimum percentage required in Class 10?

No percentage condition is prescribed. A pass certificate is enough.

Can a graduate apply for SSC GD?

Yes. The qualification is a minimum, not a ceiling, and a large share of applicants hold higher degrees.

Does height or weight affect eligibility at the application stage?

No. Height and chest are verified at PST by the CAPFs, and weight is assessed through BMI at the medical stage after the corrigendum dated 29 April 2026.
