SBI Clerk Notification 2026: 7,680 Junior Associate Vacancies, Apply by 31 August

State Bank of India released Advertisement No. CRPD/CR/2026-27/17 on 11 August 2026 for 7,680 regular Junior Associate (Customer Support and Sales) posts in the clerical cadre. Registration and fee payment run from 11 August to 31 August 2026, which gives you exactly 21 days.

Before you open the application form, one fact from the vacancy table that most coverage will skip: there are no Bihar or Jharkhand vacancies in this advertisement. If you are reading this from Patna or Ranchi, that changes your entire application strategy, and the next section explains why.

The Bihar and Jharkhand Reality Check

The vacancy table covers 24 States and UTs. Bihar and Jharkhand are not among them.

What both states do have is exam centres. Bihar candidates can sit the test at Patna, Muzaffarpur, Gaya, Bhagalpur, Darbhanga, Arrah, Purnea or Aurangabad. Jharkhand has Ranchi, Jamshedpur, Dhanbad, Bokaro Steel City and Hazaribagh. So you can write the exam at home, but you must apply against another State or UT.

That comes with two hard conditions. You have to be proficient in that state's specified local language, and there is no Inter Circle or Inter State transfer for five years of service. After five years, only exceptional cases such as Extreme Compassionate Ground or Spouse Ground get considered, at the Bank's sole discretion.

For a Hindi-medium aspirant, here is the realistic option set.

Uttar PradeshHindi or Urdu250
Madhya PradeshHindi113
Jammu and Kashmir UTUrdu or Hindi84

Total Hindi-option vacancies1,093

Andaman and Nicobar Islands adds 15 more under Hindi or English. My honest read: Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh carry the most posts, but a posting there means genuinely relocating for at least five years. Decide that before you pay ₹750, not after the result.

Category split across the 7,680: SC 1,114, ST 837, OBC 1,716, EWS 760 and General 3,253. PwBD and Ex-Servicemen reservations are horizontal and already counted inside these numbers.

Backlog Vacancies

Separate from the 7,680, SBI has listed backlog vacancies that are net of the parallel Special Recruitment Drive under advertisement CRPD/CR/SPLDRIVE/2026-27/16.

Maharashtra alone carries 91 of the SC, ST and OBC backlog posts and Gujarat carries 305 across the Ex-Servicemen group. Check your chosen state's row in the official brochure, because these are distributed very unevenly.

SBI Clerk Exam Pattern 2026

Phase I: Preliminary Examination

TestMediumQuestionsMarksDuration
English LanguageEnglish303020 minutes
Numerical AbilityEnglish or local353520 minutes
Reasoning AbilityEnglish or local353520 minutes
Total1001001 hour

Each section is separately timed at 20 minutes. Negative marking is one-fourth of the marks assigned. No minimum qualifying marks are prescribed for individual tests or for the aggregate, and section-wise marks are not maintained. Roughly 10 times the number of vacancies get shortlisted for Mains.

Phase II: Main Examination

TestMediumQuestionsMarksDuration
General and Financial AwarenessEnglish or local505035 minutes
General EnglishEnglish404035 minutes
Quantitative AptitudeEnglish or local505045 minutes
Reasoning Ability and Computer AptitudeEnglish or local506045 minutes
Total1902002 hours 40 minutes

Your Prelims marks do not count towards the final merit list. Only the Mains aggregate decides selection. Prelims is a pure screening gate, which means once you clear it, your Prelims score is irrelevant and you start from zero.

Notice that Reasoning Ability and Computer Aptitude carries 60 marks from 50 questions. That section has the highest marks-per-question weight in the entire paper and deserves proportionally more of your prep time.

Phase III: Local Language Proficiency Test

If your class 10 or class 12 marksheet shows you studied the specified local language, you skip this test entirely. Everyone else who is provisionally selected has to take it after selection but before joining. Fail it and the appointment is not offered.

Salary: What ₹46,000 Actually Means

The pay scale starts at ₹24,050 and rises to ₹64,480 across the scale. Your starting basic is ₹26,730, which is ₹24,050 plus two advance increments admissible to graduates.

SBI states that total starting emoluments at a metro like Mumbai will be around ₹46,000 per month including DA, other allowances at current rates and those two graduate increments. That figure is metro-specific. Allowances vary with the place of posting, so a small-town branch will pay less in hand than the headline number.

You also get provident fund, pension under the New Pension Scheme, medical cover, leave fare concession and various perquisites.

One thing the salary tables never mention: the notification says new recruits must have a flair for marketing, will make customer calls, provide advisory services, cross-sell products inside and outside branch premises, and may have extensive outdoor travel with flexible hours and shift working. This is a sales-facing role, not a counter job.

How to Apply Online

  1. Go to sbi.bank.in/web/careers/current-openings and open Recruitment of Junior Associates 2026.
  2. Scan your photograph, signature, left hand thumb impression and handwritten declaration to spec before you start.
  3. Complete registration. A provisional registration number and password appear on screen. Note both down.
  4. Fill the form. You can save and re-open it, but the edit facility works only three times. After final submission, nothing can be changed.
  5. Pay the fee through the integrated payment gateway using debit card, credit card or net banking.
  6. Capture your live photograph through the webcam, or scan the QR code and click it on your phone.
  7. Take a printout. Do not post it to SBI.

You may submit only one application. If you submit multiple, only the last valid one is retained and the fee paid on the others is forfeited.

The Upload Specs That Get Applications Rejected

DocumentDimensionsFile size
Photograph200 x 230 pixels20 kb to 50 kb
Signature140 x 60 pixels10 kb to 20 kb
Left thumb impression240 x 240 pixels at 200 DPI20 kb to 50 kb
Handwritten declaration800 x 400 pixels at 200 DPI50 kb to 100 kb

Three traps worth memorising. The handwritten declaration must be in English with black ink, and it will be rejected if written in capital letters. Your signature on the attendance sheet must match the one you uploaded, or you get disqualified at the centre. And keep about eight copies of the uploaded photograph, because you need two extra prints at both the Prelims and the Mains.

Also retain your Prelims call letter. SBI does not collect it at the venue, and you must carry it to the Mains along with the Mains call letter.

How to Prepare With Roughly Five Weeks to Prelims

  1. Train for 20-minute sectional blocks from day one. Prelims is not a 60-minute paper you can distribute freely. English shuts at 20 minutes whether you finished or not.
  2. Numerical and Reasoning carry 35 marks each against English's 30. If your time is limited, that is where the extra hours go.
  3. Do not build a Mains plan yet. Prelims marks are discarded later, but you cannot reach Mains without clearing it first. Clear the gate, then pivot.
  4. Guess carefully. One-fourth negative marking on a 100-mark paper punishes volume over accuracy.
  5. Book your centre early in the form. SBI reserves the right to allot a centre other than the one you opt for, and no request for change of centre, date or session is entertained.

ExamAtlas has free SBI Clerk practice sets built to the exact sectional-timing pattern in Hindi and English, with AI analytics that show which of the three Prelims sections is costing you the most marks under a real 20-minute clock.

Online registration and fee payment both close on 31 August 2026. The window opened on 11 August 2026, so you have 21 days in total.

Are there SBI Clerk vacancies in Bihar or Jharkhand?

No. Neither state appears in the vacancy table for advertisement CRPD/CR/2026-27/17. Candidates from both states can appear at exam centres in Patna, Ranchi and other listed cities, but must apply against a different State or UT and be proficient in that state's specified local language.

What is the age limit for SBI Clerk 2026?

Between 20 and 28 years as on 1 April 2026, meaning you must be born between 2 April 1998 and 1 April 2006, both days inclusive. Category relaxations run from 3 years for OBC up to 15 years for PwBD candidates of SC or ST category.

Do Prelims marks count in the SBI Clerk final merit list?

No. The notification is explicit that Preliminary Examination marks are not added for selection, and only the aggregate marks from the Main Examination are used to prepare the final merit list.

Yes, provisionally. If provisionally selected, you must produce proof of having passed the graduation examination on or before 31 December 2026.

What is the SBI Clerk salary in 2026?

Starting basic pay is ₹26,730, which is ₹24,050 plus two advance increments for graduates. Total starting emoluments at a metro like Mumbai come to around ₹46,000 per month including DA and allowances, with the figure varying by place of posting.

What to Decide Before You Pay the Fee

7,680 posts across a 21-day window is a large opening, and the graduation deadline of 31 December 2026 quietly widens the eligible pool to include this year's final-year students.

The real decision is not whether to apply. It is which state to apply for. A Hindi-medium candidate from Bihar or Jharkhand is choosing between 350 posts in Rajasthan, 287 in Chhattisgarh and 250 in Uttar Pradesh, and whichever one they pick locks their posting for five years with no transfer route out. Sit with that for an evening, talk to your family, then fill the form. Do not let the 31 August deadline make that choice for you on the last night.
