SBI Clerk vs IBPS Clerk 2026: Which One Should You Apply For?

SBI Clerk vs IBPS Clerk 2026: Which One Should You Apply For?

Both application windows are open right now. SBI Clerk closes on 31 August 2026 and IBPS Clerk closes on 21 August 2026, and together they carry over 21,000 posts.

The short answer for most people: apply for both. They are separate recruitments, nothing stops you from writing both, and the exam dates do not clash. The longer answer is that for a Bihar or Jharkhand candidate the two are not remotely equivalent, and one of them asks you to give up something you may not want to give up.

The Dates Do Not Clash

This is the single most useful fact in this comparison, and it decides the question for most readers.

StageSBI ClerkIBPS Clerk
PrelimsSeptember 202610 and 11 October 2026
MainsNovember 202627 December 2026

SBI's dates are tentative and IBPS's come from its published calendar, so both can shift. As things stand, the two cycles run about a month apart at every stage. You can sit SBI Prelims in September, IBPS Prelims in October, and both Mains papers without either one cancelling the other.

The syllabus overlap makes this even easier. Both Prelims are English, Numerical Ability and Reasoning Ability across 100 questions in 60 minutes with 20-minute section timers. Both Mains cover General and Financial Awareness, General English, Quantitative Aptitude, and Reasoning with Computer Aptitude. You are not preparing twice. You are preparing once and appearing twice.

The Bihar and Jharkhand Problem

Here is where the two stop being interchangeable.

SBI's vacancy table covers 24 States and UTs. Bihar and Jharkhand are not among them. Both states have exam centres, so you can write the paper in Patna, Muzaffarpur, Gaya, Bhagalpur, Ranchi, Jamshedpur or Dhanbad. But you must apply against a different State or UT, be proficient in that state's local language, and accept the posting.

The Hindi-language options available to you under SBI:

State or UTRegular vacancies
Rajasthan350
Chhattisgarh287
Uttar Pradesh250
Madhya Pradesh113
Jammu and Kashmir UT84
Himachal Pradesh9

And then the clause that matters more than any vacancy figure. SBI states there is no provision for Inter Circle or Inter State Transfer for five years of service. After five years, only exceptional cases such as Extreme Compassionate Ground or Spouse Ground are considered, entirely at the Bank's discretion.

So a Ranchi graduate selected for SBI in Rajasthan is living in Rajasthan until 2032, with no guaranteed route home after that. Under IBPS, you apply for your own state, and provisional allotment to one of the 11 banks runs on merit and preference. You stay where you are.

For most people reading this, that single difference outweighs everything else in the table.

The Age Trap Nobody Checks

Both exams say 20 to 28 years. The reference dates are four months apart, and that quietly changes who is eligible.

SBI ClerkIBPS Clerk
Age as on1 April 20261 August 2026
Date of birth band2 April 1998 to 1 April 2006, both days inclusiveCheck the CRP CSA-XVI notification for the exact band

SBI's exact date band is printed in its advertisement. IBPS's band shifts four months later because of the different reference date, which means there is a group of candidates born in mid-1998 who clear SBI's cut-off but may fall outside IBPS's, and a group born in mid-2006 in the reverse position.

If your date of birth sits anywhere near either edge, do not assume. Open both notification PDFs and check your own date against each. This is a five-minute job that saves a wasted fee.

The Prelims Difference That Changes Your Strategy

The papers look identical. They are not scored identically.

SBI Clerk PrelimsIBPS Clerk Prelims
StructureEnglish 30, Numerical 35, Reasoning 35English 30, Numerical 35, Reasoning 35
Time20 minutes per section, 60 total20 minutes per section, 60 total
Negative markingOne-fourth per wrong answer0.25 per wrong answer
Sectional minimumNone prescribedRequired in all three sections
ShortlistingAround 10 times the vacancies, by aggregateSectional cut-off plus overall cut-off

SBI states plainly that no minimum qualifying marks are prescribed for individual tests or for the aggregate, and section-wise marks are not maintained. It is a pure ranking exercise on your total score.

IBPS requires you to clear the minimum cut-off in each of the three sections and the overall cut-off.

The practical consequence is real. A candidate who is strong in Reasoning and Numerical but weak in English can still clear SBI Prelims by banking marks in the first two sections. The same candidate can fail IBPS Prelims with the same total score, because English fell below its sectional line.

If English is your weak section, SBI is the more forgiving of the two, and IBPS is the one that will force you to fix it. Either way, fix it. Both Mains carry a 40-mark General English paper.

Mains: Where Your Selection Is Decided

In both exams, Prelims marks are discarded and only the Mains aggregate builds the merit list. Neither has an interview.

SectionSBI MainsIBPS Mains
General and Financial Awareness50 marks, 35 min50 marks
General English40 marks, 35 min40 marks
Quantitative Aptitude50 marks, 45 min50 marks
Reasoning and Computer Aptitude60 marks, 45 min60 marks
Total190 questions, 200 marks, 2 hr 40 min200 marks, question count and duration revised this cycle

The section weights are the same in both. Reasoning with Computer Aptitude carries 60 marks in each, the heaviest block in either paper. Whatever else you plan, that section deserves disproportionate time.

One caveat on the IBPS row. IBPS revised its Mains pattern for this cycle and reported figures differ on the exact question count and duration. Confirm against the official CRP CSA-XVI PDF rather than any blog, including this one.

Salary: SBI Pays More at the Start

SBI ClerkIBPS Clerk
Pay scale floor₹24,050₹24,050
Actual starting basic₹26,730₹24,050
Reason for the gapTwo advance increments admissible to graduatesNot stated
Reported starting in-handAround ₹46,000 at a metro like MumbaiAround ₹40,000 to ₹42,000
Scale ceiling₹64,480₹64,480

Both sit on the same pay scale, so the ceiling is identical. The difference is at entry: SBI's advertisement grants graduates two advance increments, lifting the starting basic from ₹24,050 to ₹26,730.

Read the in-hand row carefully. SBI's ₹46,000 comes from its own advertisement and is stated for a metro like Mumbai. The IBPS figure is a widely reported estimate, not an official one. Both fall with the posting city because HRA is city-linked, so a small-town branch pays less in hand than either headline number suggests.

What It Costs to Apply for Both

CategorySBIIBPSBoth
General, OBC, EWS₹750₹850₹1,600
SC, ST, PwBDNil₹175₹175

If you are SC, ST or PwBD, applying for both costs ₹175 in total. There is no argument for skipping either one at that price.

Reserved-category candidates should also know that a third window is open. SBI is running a separate Special Recruitment Drive under advertisement CRPD/CR/SPLDRIVE/2026-27/16 for 1,538 backlog posts reserved exclusively for SC, ST and OBC candidates, with applications closing on 27 August 2026. That is a third form, a third fee, and a third shot.

Who Should Actually Pick Only One

Applying to both is right for most people. These are the situations where it is not.

  • You will not relocate. If leaving Bihar or Jharkhand for at least five years is genuinely off the table, an SBI selection is a problem, not a prize. Put your preparation into IBPS.
  • You fall outside one age band. Check both date bands against your own date of birth before paying anything.
  • You did an SBI apprenticeship. Trained apprentices of SBI get bonus marks in the SBI Mains, 2.5 percent of maximum marks, which is 5 marks out of 200, subject to the conditions in the advertisement. They also get age relaxation. That advantage exists only at SBI, and it is large enough to change your priority.
  • Your English is genuinely weak and time is short. SBI Prelims has no sectional minimum, so it is the softer entry point while you repair that section.

Full breakdowns of each are in our SBI Clerk notification guide and IBPS Clerk notification guide. ExamAtlas has free mock tests for both in the sectional-timer format, with analytics that show your section-wise position against each exam's own cut-off logic.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I apply for both SBI Clerk and IBPS Clerk in 2026?

Yes. They are separate recruitments run by different bodies, and nothing prevents you from applying for and appearing in both. The tentative exam dates are roughly a month apart at each stage, so they should not clash.

Which is easier, SBI Clerk or IBPS Clerk?

The Prelims papers have an identical structure, but IBPS requires you to clear a minimum cut-off in each of the three sections while SBI prescribes no minimum for individual tests. A candidate with one weak section will usually find SBI the more forgiving of the two.

Which pays more, SBI Clerk or IBPS Clerk?

SBI at entry. Both use the same pay scale from ₹24,050 to ₹64,480, but SBI grants graduates two advance increments, making the starting basic ₹26,730 against ₹24,050 for IBPS.

Can Bihar and Jharkhand candidates apply for SBI Clerk 2026?

Only against another State or UT, since neither state appears in the SBI vacancy table. You must be proficient in the chosen state's local language and accept that no inter-circle or inter-state transfer is available for five years of service.

What is the difference in application fee?

SBI charges ₹750 for General, OBC and EWS candidates and nothing for SC, ST, PwBD and Ex-Servicemen. IBPS charges ₹850 for General, OBC and EWS and ₹175 for SC, ST and PwBD.

Is there an interview in either exam?

No. Both are decided entirely by the Main Examination aggregate, with Prelims used only for shortlisting. SBI adds a Local Language Proficiency Test for candidates who cannot show they studied the specified language in class 10 or 12, and IBPS has a similar requirement.

The Decision, Compressed

If you can relocate and you are eligible for both, fill both forms. The syllabus is shared, the dates are staggered, and the second form costs you one evening.

If you cannot relocate, IBPS is your exam and SBI is a distraction dressed up as an opportunity. A selection you cannot accept is worse than no selection, because you will have spent September and November preparing for it.

Either way, the calendar is doing the deciding for you. IBPS closes on 21 August, which is sooner. Fill that one first, then take your time with SBI.
