More than half the posts, 16,101 of them, sit at the Classes 11-12 level, which makes this the strongest cycle in years for post-graduate candidates. The notification also carries a note that a supplementary requisition for a handful of subjects, including Bangla, Maithili, Bhojpuri, Arabic, Farsi and Agriculture, may add further posts once the General Administration Department clears it.

At the Classes 6-8 level the biggest counts are Mathematics and Science with 2,188 posts, English with 1,929, Sanskrit with 1,225 and Social Science with 1,190. Eligibility is fixed by the class level. You need the academic degree, the teacher training and a valid TET or STET certificate for the matching paper.
Relaxed marks apply where NCTE norms allow, generally 45% with B.Ed. Teachers already appointed before 2012 who cleared the departmental competency test are exempt from the TET or STET requirement. The STET 2026 provision every candidate is asking about
Here is the clause that decides whether this year's STET aspirants can apply, and most sites have skipped it. The notification states plainly that candidates who are appearing in STET 2026 can also apply for TRE 4.0, on one condition: they must clear STET 2026 before the TRE Preliminary exam. If a candidate has not passed STET by then, the Prelims admit card will not be issued.

Age limit and relaxations
The age rule has a twist that trips people up: the minimum and maximum ages are counted on two different dates. Minimum age is reckoned as on 1 August 2026, maximum age as on 1 August 2024.
Divyang candidates get 10 years of relaxation, and ex-servicemen get their service period plus 3 years, capped at age 57. Reservation in age applies only to permanent residents of Bihar. Note the maximum-age date carefully: because it is fixed at 1 August 2024, a candidate right at the category ceiling has effectively two more years of headroom than the application year suggests.
Application fee
The base fee is a flat ₹100 for everyone, which is a sharp cut from earlier TRE cycles. Two catches: if you do not enter your Aadhaar number, BPSC charges an extra ₹200 biometric fee, and a separate bank service charge applies on top of the fee. Payment is online only.
Selection process: Prelims plus Mains, no interview
This is the first TRE cycle to run in two stages. Earlier phases used a single written test. Now there is a Preliminary Test followed by a Main Examination, and there is no interview at any stage.
The Preliminary Test is a screening round only. It carries 150 objective questions for 150 marks in a General Studies paper, and its marks do not count towards the final merit. Clearing it only qualifies you for the Mains. The number shortlisted for Mains is between 2.5 times and 10 times the vacancy, based on category-wise cut-offs.
The final merit is built from the Main Examination. For Classes 1-5 the merit rests on the General Studies paper. For Classes 6-12 it rests on the General Studies paper and the subject paper together, while the language paper is only qualifying with a minimum of 30%. Guest teachers get a weightage of 5 marks per year of service, capped at 25 marks.
The five-option answer model and negative marking
TRE 4.0 uses the same five-option format Bihar introduced in its recent exams, and it changes how you should attempt the paper. Each question has five options, A to E. Options A to D carry the content answers. Option E means "question not attempted."
The marking is the part to respect. A correct answer earns 1 mark. A wrong answer costs one-third of a mark. And if you leave a question fully blank without marking any option, that also costs one-third of a mark. In other words, deliberately marking Option E is the only safe way to skip a question you cannot answer, because both a wrong answer and a blank carry the same penalty.
Preliminary exam pattern and syllabus
The Prelims General Studies covers general science, national and international current affairs, Indian and Bihar history, the national movement, geography, Indian polity and economy, and general mental ability, with Bihar-specific content running through it. Note that the syllabus lists general mental ability, not a separate mathematics section. The category-wise qualifying marks are 40% for General, 36.5% for BC, 34% for EBC and 32% for SC, ST, Women and Divyang candidates who are Bihar residents.
Main examination structure
The Mains has four papers by level, each objective and out of 150 marks. Paper structure is a language paper, a General Studies paper and, for Classes 6-12, a subject paper.
One point needs an honest flag. The notification's structure table lists the Mains duration as 2 hours 30 minutes, while a summary line elsewhere in the same document says 2 hours. That is a conflict inside the official advertisement itself, so treat 2 hours 30 minutes as the working figure and confirm it against BPSC's exam-day instructions when the admit card arrives.
How to apply for BPSC TRE 4.0 2026
- Open the official portal at bpsconline.bihar.gov.in through the BPSC website, not a forwarded link.
- Complete the One Time Registration, then create your profile through the Meri Pehchan portal linked to DigiLocker.
- Fill personal, address, academic and experience details across the profile steps, then lock the profile.
- Open the TRE 4.0 advertisement under Active Advertisements, click Apply and pay the fee online.
- Upload a live photograph sized between 20 KB and 200 KB and a signature.
- Submit the application and download the confirmation page.
Once you lock your profile and submit an application, no detail can be changed for that advertisement. You can apply to only one level with one application, so decide your class and subject before you start. Candidates get a maximum of five attempts at this exam over its cycles.

The form opens on 1 September, which gives you a clear runway. Sort your documents first: Class 10 and 12 certificates, graduation and post-graduation marksheets, B.Ed. certificate, residence and caste certificates, and your CTET or STET result.
