SBI Clerk 2026 Complete Guide: 9,766 Junior Associate Posts, Exam Pattern, Salary and a Prep Plan That Fits the Calendar
State Bank of India has advertised 9,766 Junior Associate (Customer Support and Sales) posts in the SBI Clerk 2026 cycle, and the online application window closes on 31 August 2026. All facts on this page are current as on 30 August 2026.
This guide does something most SBI Clerk pages refuse to do. It separates what SBI has actually announced for 2026 from the pattern the bank has repeated for several years, and it marks every figure we could not confirm against the official notification PDF. You should know which numbers you can bet a study plan on and which ones you must open the PDF to check.
SBI Clerk 2026 at a Glance
That last row is not a typo. Two figures were circulating on the day this page was written, and we are printing both rather than picking the prettier one. The number that decides your cut-off is the state and category figure printed in the official advertisement, not a headline. Read our breakdown in the SBI Clerk 2026 notification analysis before you finalise your state preference.
Important Dates for SBI Clerk 2026
We are deliberately not printing a prelims date we could not verify from SBI itself. Several sites carry confident date tables that turn out to be last year's schedule with the year edited. Open the careers portal, check the schedule attached to your own registration number, and trust the call letter over any blog, including this one.
One date that is already gone: the SBI Clerk special recruitment drive for SC, ST and OBC backlog posts closed on 27 August 2026. It ran as a separate advertisement with its own vacancy pool. If you qualified for it and missed the window, the regular 2026 cycle is your route, and backlog posts usually reappear in a later drive.
Eligibility for SBI Clerk 2026
Educational qualification. A graduation degree in any discipline from a recognised university, or an equivalent qualification recognised by the central government. Integrated dual degree holders need the passing certificate. Final year students are generally eligible only if they can produce proof of passing by the date stated in the advertisement, so check that clause word by word if your result is pending.
Age limit. SBI has used a 20 to 28 year band for Junior Associate across recent cycles, measured on a cut-off date printed in the notification. Relaxation follows the standard rule set: 5 years for SC and ST, 3 years for OBC non creamy layer, 10 years for PwBD general with higher relaxation for reserved PwBD candidates, and separate provisions for ex servicemen and widows. Confirm the exact cut-off date from the PDF, because a birthday sitting close to the boundary decides your candidature.
Language requirement. This is the clause candidates ignore and then panic about. You must be able to read, write and speak the official language of the state or union territory you apply for. SBI verifies this with a local language test after the final result, unless you studied that language up to Class 10 and can prove it with a marksheet.
Fail the test and the offer goes away, whatever your mains score was. Treat the state you tick on the form as a commitment, not a preference.
Nationality. Indian citizens, along with the other categories SBI lists in the notification, including subjects of Nepal and Bhutan and certain persons of Indian origin who have migrated with the intention of permanently settling in India.
SBI Clerk Exam Pattern
SBI has kept the two phase structure stable for several cycles. Treat the tables below as the pattern to prepare against, and confirm them against the 2026 advertisement before your call letter arrives.
Preliminary Examination
Sectional timing is the whole difficulty of this paper. You get 20 minutes for English and you cannot borrow 4 minutes from Reasoning, however comfortable you feel. Prelims is qualifying in nature, which means the marks do not carry into the final merit list, but the cut-off is high enough that a single mismanaged section ends the attempt.
Main Examination
Mains marks decide the merit list. Notice that Reasoning and Computer Aptitude carries 60 marks against 50 questions, so each question there is worth more than a question anywhere else in the paper. Candidates who split their revision evenly across four sections are quietly under investing in the highest paying one.
Syllabus Break-up
English Language. Reading comprehension with two or three passages, cloze test, error spotting, sentence rearrangement, para jumbles, fillers, word usage and phrase replacement. Mains adds longer passages and more inference based questions rather than harder grammar.
Numerical Ability and Quantitative Aptitude. Simplification and approximation, number series, quadratic comparison, data interpretation in tables, bar graphs, pie charts and caselets, and arithmetic topics: percentage, ratio, average, profit and loss, simple and compound interest, time and work, time speed distance, mixtures, partnership, mensuration, permutation and probability. Prelims leans on speed topics. Mains leans on data interpretation and mixed arithmetic sets.
Reasoning Ability. Puzzles and seating arrangement carry the largest share: linear rows, circular and square arrangements, floor and box puzzles, month and day based scheduling. Add syllogism, inequality, blood relations, direction sense, order and ranking, coding decoding, input output, data sufficiency and statement based reasoning.
Computer Aptitude. Computer fundamentals, hardware and software basics, operating systems, MS Office, internet and networking terms, database basics, shortcut keys, and elementary security concepts such as firewalls, malware types and password hygiene.
General and Financial Awareness. Banking and financial awareness dominates: RBI functions and policy rates, monetary policy terms, banking regulations, types of accounts, negotiable instruments, capital and money market basics, insurance and pension schemes, and government financial schemes. Add current affairs of roughly the last six months, budget highlights, national and international appointments, awards, sports and important days. Static general knowledge appears in a small share.
Application Fee
In recent SBI Clerk cycles the application fee has been 750 rupees for General, OBC and EWS candidates, with no fee for SC, ST, PwBD and eligible ex servicemen candidates. Payment is online through debit card, credit card, net banking or UPI where offered, and the fee is not refundable. Verify the figure in the 2026 advertisement before you pay, since fee revisions are announced without much noise.
Selection Process, Step by Step
- Preliminary exam. Qualifying only. SBI shortlists candidates state wise and category wise, usually around ten times the vacancies in that state and category.
- Main exam. The scoring stage. Your mains marks, after any normalisation SBI applies across shifts, build the merit list.
- Local language test. Conducted after the final result for candidates who cannot produce Class 10 proof of the state language. Qualifying, but it is a genuine elimination point.
- Document verification and medical. Certificates, category proof, age proof and educational documents in original.
- Joining and probation. Appointment as Junior Associate with a probation period during which SBI runs internal training and assessment.
There is no interview for Junior Associate. That is a real advantage over many state level recruitments, and it is also why the mains cut-off runs high: everything rests on one paper.
Salary and What the Job Actually Involves
The basic pay for a newly appointed Junior Associate has been in the region of 19,900 rupees in the pay scale SBI published in recent cycles, with dearness allowance, house rent allowance, transport allowance and other components on top. Gross starting pay in a metro posting has commonly been quoted in the 26,000 to 29,000 rupee band, and the figure moves with the DA revision and the city classification of your branch.
The work itself is branch banking. Cash handling, account opening, KYC updates, deposits and withdrawals, passbook and cheque work, customer queries at the counter, and a cross selling target for insurance and investment products. Promotion to Trainee Officer is available through internal channels after the qualifying service period, and many clerks clear JAIIB and CAIIB during that time to move faster.
What Most SBI Clerk Guides Get Wrong
They copy last year's dates. The most common error in this niche is a date table lifted from the previous cycle with the year changed. If a page gives you a confident prelims date but cannot name the notification that announced it, treat the date as decoration.
They treat prelims marks as if they matter. Prelims is a gate, not a score. Once you cross the state and category cut-off, an extra six marks buys you nothing. Candidates who spend three months perfecting prelims speed and one month on General and Financial Awareness have the ratio backwards.
They ignore the language test. A candidate from Bihar who applies to a Karnataka vacancy because the vacancy count looks generous will face a Kannada language test after the final result. Vacancy arithmetic that ignores this clause has ended more selections than any cut-off ever did.
They compare SBI Clerk to IBPS Clerk on vacancy count alone. The exams differ in sectional timing, mains structure, the weight of financial awareness and the posting pattern. Our IBPS Clerk versus SBI Clerk comparison lays out the differences that actually change your preparation.
They promise a 30 day miracle. Thirty days is enough to sharpen a prepared candidate. It is not enough to build reasoning puzzle ability from zero. Honest planning starts with an audit of where you already are.
A Prep Plan That Fits the Real Calendar
Work backwards from your call letter, not forwards from today. The plan below assumes roughly eight weeks before prelims and a further gap before mains, which is the shape SBI cycles usually take.
Weeks 1 and 2: diagnosis and foundations. Take one full prelims mock in week one before studying anything. It will be uncomfortable and it is the most useful 60 minutes of the whole plan, because it tells you which section is bleeding marks. Then rebuild fundamentals: arithmetic formulas, one puzzle type per day, and 30 minutes of reading comprehension daily.
Weeks 3 and 4: sectional speed. Move to timed sectional practice. Twenty minutes for English, twenty for Numerical Ability, twenty for Reasoning, every single day, with the timer running. The aim is not accuracy in isolation, it is accuracy inside a hard stop.
Track attempts and accuracy in a notebook, section by section. By the end of week four you should know your realistic attempt count in each section.
Weeks 5 and 6: full mocks and analysis. Three full prelims mocks a week, and here is the part people skip: spend twice as long analysing a mock as writing it. Two hours of analysis after a 60 minute mock is the correct ratio. Log every wrong answer into one of three buckets: did not know, knew but slow, knew but careless.
The third bucket usually holds the most recoverable marks. Careless errors are a process problem, and process problems fix faster than knowledge gaps.
Weeks 7 and 8: peak and taper. Keep mock frequency, cut new topics entirely. Start General and Financial Awareness in parallel now, because the mains gap is short and awareness is the section that cannot be crammed in a week. Six months of current affairs and banking awareness needs daily contact, not a final sprint.
After prelims, before mains. Switch the ratio. General and Financial Awareness and Reasoning with Computer Aptitude deserve the largest blocks, because they carry 110 of the 200 mains marks between them. Data interpretation sets get daily practice.
English in mains rewards a reading habit more than grammar drilling. One editorial a day, read for argument rather than vocabulary, does more than a grammar book.
If you want a day by day version of the prelims half, our 30 day bank clerk prelims study plan breaks it into daily targets you can tick off.
Practise Under Exam Conditions
Sectional timing cannot be simulated with a book and a stopwatch. You need a screen, a real clock that locks the section, and a results page that shows attempts, accuracy and time per question. Take your free mocks and sectional tests on the ExamAtlas banking exam hub, then use the analysis page to decide what next week looks like. Two analysed mocks beat six unanalysed ones, every time.
SBI Clerk 2026 FAQs
How many vacancies are there in SBI Clerk 2026?
Most reports on 30 August 2026 put the regular vacancy count at 9,766 Junior Associate posts, and one outlet listed 9,124. The official advertisement PDF is the deciding document, and the number that matters to you is your own state and category figure inside it, not the national total.
When does the SBI Clerk 2026 application close?
The online application window closes on 31 August 2026. The separate special recruitment drive for SC, ST and OBC backlog posts closed earlier, on 27 August 2026.
Is there negative marking in SBI Clerk?
Yes. One fourth of the marks assigned to a question is deducted for a wrong answer, in both prelims and mains. Questions left blank carry no penalty, so a genuine guess between two options is reasonable and a blind guess among four is not.
Do prelims marks count in the final merit list?
No. Prelims is qualifying. Only the main examination marks, after normalisation across shifts, decide the final merit list for Junior Associate.
What is the local language test and can I avoid it?
It checks that you can read, write and speak the official language of the state you applied for. You are exempt if you studied that language up to Class 10 and can produce the marksheet. Otherwise you sit the test after the final result, and failing it costs you the appointment.
Is there an interview for SBI Clerk?
No interview is conducted for the Junior Associate post. Selection runs on prelims, mains, the language test and document verification.
What is the starting salary of an SBI Clerk?
Basic pay for a new Junior Associate has been around 19,900 rupees in the scale SBI published in recent cycles, with gross starting pay commonly quoted between 26,000 and 29,000 rupees depending on city classification and the current dearness allowance rate.
How many attempts do I get for SBI Clerk?
SBI has specified limits on the number of attempts for certain categories in past advertisements, so this is a clause to read in the 2026 PDF rather than assume. Age eligibility is the practical limit for most candidates.
Final Word
One point that rarely appears in SBI Clerk guides: your state preference is a strategic decision, not a formality. Cut-offs move sharply between states because vacancies, applicant density and reservation break-ups differ, and the language test attaches a real condition to whichever state you choose. A candidate who picks a state on vacancy count alone, without checking the language clause and the previous cut-off for that state and category, is optimising the wrong variable.
Be honest about the caveat running through this page. The 2026 vacancy figure appeared as 9,766 in most reporting and 9,124 in at least one, and we could not confirm the exact prelims date from SBI directly, so we did not print one. Everything marked as a pattern from earlier cycles is exactly that: reliable enough to prepare against, not reliable enough to argue with an invigilator about. Open the official PDF once, read the eligibility and language clauses slowly, and let the call letter settle the calendar.
