UPSSSC PET 2026: Dates, Pattern, Syllabus and How the Score Actually Works
UPSSSC PET 2026 is not a recruitment exam and it does not fill a single post. It is the gate you cross before the Uttar Pradesh Subordinate Services Selection Commission lets you apply for its Group C vacancies at all. The Commission published the notification on 1 August 2026 and kept applications open from 3 August to 1 September 2026. Miss that window and you sit out the next set of UPSSSC recruitments no matter how well you know the syllabus.
This guide sticks to what is confirmed as of 30 August 2026 and marks clearly what is still open. The exam date has not been announced. Fees, age limits, the 100-question paper and the three-year score validity all come from the 2026 cycle, and every figure below is date-stamped so you can tell at a glance whether it has since moved.
UPSSSC PET 2026 at a Glance
Before the detail, here is the whole exam in one table. If you are new to UPSSSC, read the "purpose" row twice, because it explains why this paper behaves differently from every other exam you have prepared for.
Important Dates for UPSSSC PET 2026
Two dates in this table are hard, published dates. The rest are either open or estimated from how the Commission has run earlier cycles, and they are labelled that way. Do not build a study plan on an estimated date.
One practical point about the last date. The 1 September 2026 deadline covers both the form and the fee, so a payment that fails on the evening of 1 September does not get you an extra day. Aspirants lose a full cycle to exactly this every year. Pay early, download the confirmation page, and keep the transaction reference.
Eligibility: Who Can Apply
PET has the widest eligibility of any major exam in Uttar Pradesh, and that is deliberate. The Commission wants the largest possible qualified pool before it starts advertising individual posts.
- Educational qualification: Class 10 (High School) pass from a recognised board. Anything above that also qualifies. Graduates, postgraduates and diploma holders all sit the same paper.
- Age limit: Minimum 18 years and maximum 40 years, calculated as on 1 July 2026.
- Age relaxation: Applies as per Uttar Pradesh government rules for reserved categories. The exact years for each category are set out in the notification, so read that section rather than trusting a coaching table.
- One Time Registration: UPSSSC runs applications through its OTR system. Without an active OTR number you cannot submit the PET form at all.
- Domicile: Candidates from outside Uttar Pradesh can appear, but reservation and age relaxation benefits generally follow UP domicile rules.
The Class 10 floor is the single most misread line in the whole notification. It sets who may apply. It does not set the difficulty of the paper, and it does not mean the questions are Class 10 questions. Read the next two sections before you decide how much time this exam deserves.
UPSSSC PET 2026 Exam Pattern
Do the arithmetic on that negative marking before the exam, not after it. Four wrong answers cancel one correct answer. If you attempt 90 questions and get 70 right, you score 70 minus 5, which is 65. If you attempt 75 and get 68 right, you score 68 minus 1.75, which is 66.25. The second candidate answered fifteen fewer questions and finished ahead.
That is the whole strategy in two lines. Blind guessing costs you more than it earns once your accuracy drops below roughly 50 percent on a question. A guess between two options you can defend is worth taking. A guess between four is not.
One caveat worth stating plainly. The Commission has run PET as a pen-and-paper OMR test in earlier cycles, and nothing in the 2026 notification cycle suggests a change. Confirm the mode from your Admit Card once it is out rather than assuming it from an old blog post.
Section-wise Syllabus Break-up
This is where PET stops looking like a general knowledge quiz. Thirty of the hundred marks are comprehension and data interpretation, not recall. You either practise those or you leave thirty marks on the table.
A flag on sourcing, stated once. Some preparation sites publish a shorter version of this table with around ten rows, merging Indian History with the National Movement and folding the Hindi passage rows into a single comprehension block. The totals match at 100 questions and 100 marks either way, so your preparation does not change. Treat the notification PDF on upsssc.gov.in as final on the exact row names and counts.
The 45 marks of straight subject recall
History, the National Movement, Geography, Economy, the Constitution, Science, Hindi, English and Reasoning carry 5 marks each. These are short, factual and rarely go beyond NCERT level. Old NCERT texts for Classes 6 to 10 cover most of what appears here, and a single revision notebook can hold the whole load.
The 20 marks of Current Affairs and General Awareness
Current Affairs is scored on national and international events, and Uttar Pradesh appears regularly inside General Awareness. Schemes, districts, rivers, festivals, folk arts and recent state-level appointments are all fair game. Twelve months of monthly compilations plus daily reading is enough. This section rewards consistency more than intelligence.
The 10 marks of Hindi comprehension
Two unseen Hindi passages, five questions each. These are not grammar questions. You are asked for the central idea, a title, the meaning of a word in context and a direct inference. Candidates who read Hindi fluently often skip practice here and then lose marks to inference questions they answered from memory rather than from the passage.
The 20 marks of graph and table interpretation
Two graphs and two tables, five questions each. Expect percentage change, ratios, averages, totals and simple comparisons. The maths is easy. The time pressure is not, because reading a table correctly under a clock is a separate skill from calculating. Practise these with a timer from day one.
Application Fee
The Rs 25 processing charge is separate from the exam fee and applies to everyone, which is why the PwD total is not zero. EWS candidates should confirm their applicable slab from the notification rather than assuming it matches the General row. Payment is online through the OTR portal.
Selection Process: What the PET Score Actually Buys You
PET produces a score and a rank. It does not produce a job, a merit list for a post, or a joining letter. Here is the actual sequence.
- You appear for PET and receive a scorecard with marks and a state rank.
- That score stays valid for three years from the date the result is declared.
- UPSSSC advertises individual Group C recruitments during those three years.
- For each advertisement, the Commission fixes a PET score cut-off based on vacancies and applicants for that post.
- Candidates above that cut-off are called for the main exam, skill test, physical test or document verification as the post requires.
- Final selection is decided by that post's own stages, not by your PET marks.
The three-year validity is the most useful thing about the current PET framework. One good score covers every UPSSSC advertisement in that period, which means the cost of scoring well once is spread across many recruitments. A weak score, equally, follows you for three years unless you sit PET again in a later cycle.
If the exam runs across multiple shifts, raw marks from different shifts are not directly comparable and a normalisation formula is applied to put them on a common scale. Candidates ask about this every cycle and usually get a hand-wave in reply. The mechanics are the same idea used across large Indian recruitment exams, and we have broken the formula down with worked numbers in our explainer on how exam normalisation is calculated across shifts.
What Most PET Guides Get Wrong
Four things get repeated across PET articles that are either wrong or misleading, and each one costs candidates marks.
The phantom cut-off. Articles publish an "expected PET cut-off" as if there were a single pass mark. There is not. The cut-off is set separately for each post-specific advertisement, and a score that clears one recruitment may not clear another in the same year. Aim for a rank, not a number someone guessed in June.
The Class 10 trap. Because the qualification bar is High School, PET gets described as easy. The bar sets who may sit, not how hard the paper is. Graduates and postgraduates compete for the same ranks, lakhs of candidates apply, and the difference between a usable score and a wasted attempt is often five marks of data interpretation.
Treating it as a pure GK paper. Thirty marks come from passages, graphs and tables. A candidate who prepares only static GK and current affairs is preparing for 70 percent of the paper and competing against people preparing for all of it.
Stale validity figures. Plenty of older pages still say the PET score is valid for one year. The current framework carries a three-year validity from the result date. If a site has that wrong, assume the rest of its dates are stale too.
A Prep Plan Built Around an Unannounced Exam Date
The exam date is open as of 30 August 2026. Judging by earlier cycles the gap between the close of applications and the exam has run to roughly two to three months, so plan for eight to ten weeks and treat anything extra as a bonus. Build the plan so it still works if the date lands early.
Weeks 1 to 3: cover the syllabus once
Two hours a day on static subjects, working through History, the National Movement, Geography, Economy and the Constitution in that order. One hour a day on Elementary Arithmetic and Reasoning. Thirty minutes on current affairs from a monthly compilation. Do not attempt full mocks yet. You are building the base.
Weeks 4 to 6: shift to the scoring sections
Move an hour a day to graph and table interpretation, with a timer set at four minutes per set. Add two Hindi passages daily. Keep static revision going in short thirty-minute blocks so nothing decays. Start one full-length Mock Test a week from week four.
Weeks 7 to 8: mocks and error logs
Two full mocks a week, taken at the same time of day the real exam is likely to run. Spend twice as long analysing each mock as you spent taking it. Keep an error log split into three columns: did not know, knew but misread, and knew but ran out of time. The third column is a pacing problem and it fixes fastest.
Final ten days: no new material
Revision only. Your own notes, your error log, last six months of current affairs, and one mock every alternate day. Print the Admit Card the day it appears and check the exam centre distance and travel time. Candidates lose marks to a stressful morning far more often than they admit.
Where the daily hours should go
- Static subjects (45 marks): about 40 percent of study time early on, dropping to 25 percent later.
- Current Affairs and General Awareness (20 marks): a steady 30 to 45 minutes every single day, never crammed.
- Graph, table and Hindi passages (30 marks): at least 30 percent of your time from week four, done with a clock running.
- Arithmetic and Reasoning (10 marks): 20 to 30 minutes daily, mostly speed drills on familiar question types.
If your preparation overlaps with a national-level exam, the static and reasoning work carries across almost completely. Our breakdown of the SSC CGL Tier 1 syllabus with topic weightage maps the overlapping topics, which is worth a look if you are running both preparations at once.
Test Yourself Before the Commission Does
Reading a syllabus table tells you nothing about your pace under 120 minutes of clock. The only reliable measure is a timed full-length paper in the real pattern, followed by an honest look at where the marks went. Attempt the UPSSSC PET 2026 Mock Test series to get section-wise accuracy, time spent per section and a rank against other aspirants preparing for the same paper.
One instruction on how to use mocks. Take the first one before you feel ready. A mock taken at 40 percent preparation tells you what to fix; a mock taken at 90 percent only tells you what you already knew.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is UPSSSC PET 2026 a recruitment exam?
No. PET is a screening test that qualifies you to apply for UPSSSC Group C recruitments. It advertises no vacancies and appoints nobody by itself. Selection happens through each post's own main exam, skill test or physical test after you clear that recruitment's PET score cut-off.
What is the last date to apply for UPSSSC PET 2026?
1 September 2026, for both the application form and the fee payment. The window opened on 3 August 2026 following the notification on 1 August 2026. There is no separate extra day for fee payment, so complete the transaction well before the deadline.
How long is the UPSSSC PET score valid?
Three years from the date the result is declared. Every UPSSSC Group C advertisement issued in that period can be applied to on the strength of that single score. Older articles claiming a one-year validity are out of date.
What is the negative marking in UPSSSC PET?
0.25 marks, one fourth of a mark, is deducted for every wrong answer. Four wrong answers wipe out one correct answer. Unanswered questions carry no penalty, which makes disciplined skipping a real scoring strategy rather than a sign of weakness.
What is the minimum qualification for UPSSSC PET 2026?
Class 10 pass from a recognised board. Higher qualifications are welcome but bring no advantage in the PET paper itself. Individual post advertisements set their own qualification requirements, which are frequently higher than the PET floor.
Has the UPSSSC PET 2026 exam date been announced?
Not as of 30 August 2026. The Commission usually announces the date after the application window closes and issues Admit Cards roughly a week to ten days before the exam. Check upsssc.gov.in and your registered email rather than waiting for a coaching announcement.
Is there a fixed passing mark in UPSSSC PET?
No. There is no universal qualifying mark. Each Group C recruitment fixes its own PET score cut-off based on the number of vacancies and applicants for that post. This is why targeting a high rank matters more than chasing a number circulated before the exam.
How many questions come from graph and table interpretation?
Twenty questions carrying 20 marks, split as two graphs and two tables with five questions each. Add the two Hindi comprehension passages and 30 of the 100 marks come from reading and interpreting given data rather than from recall.
Final Word
One thing rarely mentioned in PET coverage deserves your attention: clearing PET is not the end of your paperwork. Once the score is out, you still have to watch for and apply to each individual UPSSSC advertisement separately, each with its own form, fee and closing date. Candidates with good PET scores routinely miss recruitments because they assumed qualifying meant they would be called automatically.
Set a reminder to check upsssc.gov.in twice a month for the next three years, keep your OTR profile current, and keep scanned documents ready in the required formats. The score gets you through the gate. Staying alert to what comes after it is what turns the score into a job.
