Major Industries and Industrial Regions

A few large industries carry most of India's manufacturing output. Iron and steel is the basic industry on which machinery, construction and transport depend, while cotton textile is the largest employer among agro based industries. Around these, manufacturing has clustered into a handful of industrial regions.

Iron and Steel, and Textile

  • Iron and steel needs iron ore, coking coal, limestone and manganese in roughly a fixed ratio, plus plenty of water and power.
  • Most plants therefore sit in the Chotanagpur plateau region, close to both ore and coal.
  • The first successful modern plant was set up at Jamshedpur in Jharkhand.
  • Other important centres include Bhilai, Rourkela, Durgapur, Bokaro and Vishakhapatnam.
  • Cotton textile began in Mumbai and Ahmedabad, helped by black soil cotton, humid climate, port access and capital.
  • The industry has two parts: the organised mill sector and the very large decentralised handloom and powerloom sector.
  • Jute mills are concentrated along the Hooghly in West Bengal, close to the jute growing belt and the port.

Other Industries and Regions

  • Sugar mills cluster in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Maharashtra; the industry is seasonal and is shifting south where recovery is higher.
  • Cement needs limestone, coal and gypsum, so plants sit near limestone belts in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat.
  • Aluminium smelting needs bauxite and very large amounts of power.
  • Information technology clusters in Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, Chennai, Noida and Gurugram, drawn by skilled labour rather than raw material.
  • Major industrial regions include Mumbai Pune, Hugli, Bengaluru Chennai, Gujarat, Chotanagpur, Vishakhapatnam Guntur, Gurugram Delhi Meerut and Kollam Thiruvananthapuram.
  • Industrial growth has also brought pollution, so effluent treatment, cleaner fuel and rainwater recharge are now part of plant design.
  • Small scale and cottage industries still employ far more people than large plants and need less capital.

Exam me kaise aata hai

  • First successful modern iron and steel plant — Jamshedpur
  • Jute mills are concentrated along — the Hooghly
  • Cement industry needs which mineral — limestone
  • IT industry is drawn mainly by — skilled labour

UPSC/State PSC ke liye

  • Industrial pollution has four forms — air, water, land and noise — and treatment of effluent before discharge is the single most effective control.
  • Sugar recovery is higher in the south because the cane there has higher sucrose and a longer crushing season, which is why the industry has been shifting there.

Yahan confuse hote hain

Cotton textile is a mineral based industry | It is an agro based industry  |

Steel plants are located near markets | They are located near ore and coal  |

IT industry needs heavy raw material | IT needs skilled labour and connectivity, not bulk raw material  |

Ek nazar me

  • Iron and steel is the basic industry; Jamshedpur was the first modern plant.
  • Cotton textile is the largest agro based employer; jute mills line the Hooghly.
  • Cement follows limestone; IT follows skilled labour.
  • Industrial regions cluster around ports, coalfields and metro cities.
