Reading Data

Data handling is the collection, organisation, presentation and interpretation of information. In Classes 1 to 5 it begins with sorting real objects and ends with reading a bar graph, and the skill CTET tests is interpretation — pulling the right number out of a table or chart.

The stages of data work

  1. Collection — counting real things: how many children come by cycle, what each child ate for breakfast.
  2. Organisation — tally marks and a frequency table.
  3. Representation — pictograph, bar graph or simple table.
  4. Interpretation — reading the highest, the lowest, the total, the difference, the trend.

Tally marks

Tally marks are grouped in fives because counting in fives is faster and errors are easier to spot. A tally table with a frequency column is the standard Class 3 exercise and is often the source of a CTET data question.

  • Total children: 18 + 12 + 9 + 6 = 45.
  • Most common mode: walking. Least common: auto.
  • How many more walk than come by bus? 18 - 9 = 9.
  • What fraction come by cycle? 12/45, which simplifies to 4/15.

Notice the last two: CTET data questions usually combine reading with an operation, so the difficulty lies in the arithmetic that follows, not in the chart.

Sorting comes first

Before any table, a Class 1 child sorts. Buttons by colour, leaves by shape, children by the month of their birthday. Sorting is the act that creates categories, and a category is what a data column actually is. A child who has never sorted physical objects reads a frequency table as a set of unrelated numbers.

Mean, median and mode at this level

  • Mean or average = sum of all values divided by the number of values.
  • Median = the middle value when the data is arranged in order.
  • Mode = the value that occurs most often.
  • For 4, 7, 7, 9, 13 the mean is 8, the median is 7 and the mode is 7.

The average of 4, 7, 7, 9, 13 is 7 because 7 appears twice.  |   That is the mode; the average is the total, 40, divided by 5, which is 8.

Data handling gives one or two questions and they are among the most gettable marks in the paper. Read the chart labels first, then the question. The reliable trap is confusing mean, median and mode, so keep the three definitions crisp. A second trap asks for a fraction or a percentage of the total rather than a bare count. In pedagogy items, the correct answer always begins data work with the children's own collected data, not with a printed table.

Why are tally marks grouped in fives?
