Bar Graph and Line Graph Interpretation
Bar and line graphs show quantities visually, so the extra skill they demand is accurate reading off an axis. In SBI Clerk these sets are common and very scoreable once you get comfortable estimating values between gridlines. The maths behind them is identical to table DI — percentage, ratio and average — only the data now arrives as heights and points rather than printed numbers.
Reading Values Accurately
Line up each bar top or line point with the vertical axis and read the value against the nearest gridline, estimating a fraction between lines when needed. Note the axis scale first: a gap of one gridline might mean 10 units or 100. Most reading errors come from misjudging the scale, so confirm it before you read a single value and your figures will stay trustworthy.
Bar Graphs: Grouped and Stacked
A simple bar graph shows one value per bar; a grouped bar shows two or more bars per category for easy comparison; a stacked bar splits a single bar into parts that sum to a total. For stacked bars, remember that each segment is a portion of the whole, so a percentage question may ask for a segment's share of its own bar rather than of the grand total — read the wording carefully.
Line Graphs: Trends and Change
Line graphs are built for change over time, so their questions lean towards increase, decrease and percentage change between two points. The steeper the line between two points, the larger the change. When a question asks for the period of greatest growth, you can often spot it visually from the steepest segment before doing any arithmetic, which saves valuable seconds.
Percentage change between two points = (later − earlier) / earlier × 100
Solved Example
Example: A line graph shows profit rising from 40 to 60 lakh across two years. The percentage increase is (20 / 40) × 100 = 50%, and the steepest segment on the graph marks the year of fastest growth without further calculation.

Estimating Between Gridlines
Graph values rarely sit exactly on a gridline, so you need a quick, honest way to estimate the fraction between two lines. Split the gap mentally into halves and quarters: a bar reaching a little above the midpoint of a 100-unit gap reads as roughly 55 to 60. Because DI options are usually spread apart, this level of estimation is precise enough to pick the right answer without pretending to a false accuracy. The exception is a comparison question where two bars are almost equal, and there you should read both against the same gridline and compare their heights directly rather than converting each to a number. Training your eye to estimate confidently is what keeps graph sets as fast as table sets.

Exam Pointer — Bar and line graph DI is standard in SBI Clerk. The only added risk over tables is axis misreading, so lock the scale first. Line graphs favour percentage-change questions and bar graphs favour comparison and ratio questions — knowing this lets you predict the operation before you read the question.
