What a house is made of depends on what is available nearby, what the climate demands and what the family can afford. EVS asks children to look at their own house and name its materials, which turns an abstract chapter into an observation exercise.

Why materials differ by region

The people who build
A house needs a mason, a carpenter, a plumber, an electrician, a painter and many labourers. EVS names these workers deliberately, so that children see the labour behind a building and treat every occupation with respect. Many children in a government school have a parent doing exactly this work.
Building and the environment
Bricks need clay and fuel, cement needs limestone and great heat, wood needs trees. EVS at Class 5 introduces the idea that building has an environmental cost and that traditional materials such as mud and bamboo are often the more sustainable choice — a point that connects this chapter to the water and waste chapters.
