Direction and Distance: Turns and Shortest Path
Direction sense tests whether you can track a person walking, turning and stopping, then answer where they are or how far from the start. SBI Clerk sets two to three such questions, and they are pure diagram marks: sketch the path on a simple grid and the answer appears. The two skills that matter are handling left and right turns correctly and finding the straight-line distance when the path bends, and both are quick once the method is fixed.
The Eight Directions
Lock the compass in your mind: North at the top, South at the bottom, East to the right, West to the left, with the four corners North-East, South-East, South-West and North-West between them. Draw a small plus sign in the margin at the start of every direction question and label all eight points. This tiny reference stops the most basic error — swapping East and West — which alone accounts for a large share of lost direction marks under time pressure.

Handling Left and Right Turns
A turn is always relative to the direction the person currently faces, not to the fixed compass, and this is where careless candidates slip. If you face South and turn left, you now face East, not West. Rather than memorise every case, keep the small compass drawn and physically rotate your reading of it: a left turn moves you anticlockwise by ninety degrees, a right turn clockwise. Update the facing direction after every single turn before drawing the next segment.
Shortest Distance with the 3-4-5 Trick
When a path goes, say, east then north, the start and end points form a right angle, so the shortest distance is the hypotenuse from Pythagoras. The exam almost always rigs the two legs into a 3-4-5 pattern or its multiples, so a 30 and 40 gap gives 50 instantly, and 6 and 8 give 10. Recognising these Pythagorean triples saves you from squaring and rooting under pressure.

Solved Example
Example: Ravi walks 4 km east, then 3 km north. The straight-line distance from start is √(4² + 3²) = √25 = 5 km, a clean 3-4-5 triple, and his final position is north-east of the start.

Tracking a Multi-Turn Route
Longer questions send a person through five or six segments, and the only safe method is to draw each segment on a grid the moment you read it rather than trying to hold the route in memory. Start with a dot, extend a line in the stated direction, update the facing after every turn, and mark the endpoint. Because you have drawn the whole path, the final direction is read straight off the diagram, and the shortest distance uses only the net horizontal and net vertical displacement — cancel opposite movements first, so 3 km east then 5 km west leaves 2 km west. This netting step is what turns a scary six-turn route into a simple two-leg right triangle you already know how to solve.
