Double-Row Seating Arrangement

Double-Row Seating Arrangement

Double-row seating sits two groups in two parallel rows that face each other, and the single skill that unlocks it is mapping who sits opposite whom. Once the opposite pairs are fixed, a clue about one row often solves a seat in the other for free. SBI Clerk sets this as one 4-5 question block, and although it looks busier than a single row, the same gaps method works on both rows at once.

The Face-to-Face Setup

Picture the two rows as the top and bottom of your page. The usual convention is the top row faces south (towards the reader) and the bottom row faces north (also towards the reader), so the two rows look at each other. Because the rows face opposite ways, their left and right run in opposite directions, so a clue phrased as 'to the left' means different physical directions in the two rows. Always draw both rows and mark each row's facing before placing anyone.

Mapping Opposite Pairs

The heart of double-row seating is the vertical link: person one in the top row sits exactly opposite person one in the bottom row. When a clue says 'A faces C', it ties A's seat to C's seat, so fixing either one fixes both. Build a two-line grid and every time you place a name, immediately check whether a 'faces' clue lets you fill the seat directly across. This cross-filling is the biggest time-saver in the whole topic.

Solved Example

Example: Top row P, Q, R face south; bottom row X, Y, Z face north; each top person faces one bottom person. Q faces Y and sits in the middle, so Y is the middle of the bottom row. If P is to Q's immediate right and P faces Z, then Z sits opposite P. Placing Q-Y in the centre instantly fixes both middles, and P-Z falls out as the pair directly across from each other.

Direction Traps Across the Two Rows

The most punishing double-row error is treating both rows' left and right as identical. Because the top row faces the reader from one side and the bottom row from the other, 'immediate right' shifts a top-row person one way on your page and a bottom-row person the opposite way. A safe habit is to convert every clue into a page direction as you read: for the south-facing top row a person's right is your left, while for the north-facing bottom row a person's right is your right. Also stay alert to clues that jump between rows, such as 'the person facing the one at the extreme left of row two', which forces you to first locate a seat in one row, then cross over. Marking both facings on the diagram and cross-filling opposite pairs after every placement keeps the two rows in step and prevents the mirrored-direction slip.

Exam Pointer — SBI Clerk Prelims often includes one double-row set of 4-5 questions, sometimes with the two groups differing (like eight people, four per row). Expect a 'who faces whom' question every time. Map the opposite pairs first, mind the opposite left-right of the two rows, and aim to finish the set in about four minutes.

60-Second Recap

  • Two parallel rows facing each other; draw both first.
  • Rows face opposite ways, so left/right run opposite in each.
  • 'A faces C' locks A and C in the same column.
  • Cross-fill the opposite seat after every placement.
