What Decides the Blank

Cloze Test
A cloze test is a short paragraph with several blanks. The extra rule here is that the blanks are connected to each other, so the paragraph must be read as a whole.
- Read the whole passage once before filling anything.
- Fill the easy blanks first; they reveal the subject and tense.
- Keep the tense consistent across the passage.
- Read the finished passage once more to check that it flows.
The commonest mistake is filling blanks one by one from the top without reading the whole passage. The later sentences often decide the earlier blanks, which is why the first read matters.
