Heredity and Environment
Heredity is what a child receives through genes from parents at conception — eye colour, body build, the potential range of intelligence. Environment is everything that acts on the child after that: home, food, language, school, friends. Development is always the product of both interacting, never of one alone.
Heredity: the inner limit
Heredity sets the potential within which a child can develop. It is fixed at conception, carried by 46 chromosomes in 23 pairs, and cannot be changed by teaching. Physical features, some temperamental tendencies and the upper range of ability are shaped by it.
Environment: what fills the limit
Environment decides how much of that potential is actually reached. It begins in the womb (mother's nutrition and health) and continues through home, neighbourhood, school and media. Two brothers with similar heredity can end up far apart if one gets books, talk and encouragement and the other does not.

The interaction view
The old 'nature versus nurture' debate is closed for the exam. The accepted position is interaction: heredity provides the seed, environment provides the soil, and the plant depends on both. A child may be born with high musical potential, but without an instrument or a teacher it stays unused.
Three concrete cases from a primary classroom:
- A child with a stammer at home speaks fluently after two terms of patient turn-taking in class — environment working on a fixed base.
- A first-generation learner in Class 3 catches up in oral maths once the teacher uses Hindi examples from the local market.
- Twins in the same class differ in handwriting because one practises daily — same heredity, different practice.
Why this matters for a teacher
A teacher cannot change heredity, so professional effort belongs entirely to the environment: seating, language of instruction, learning material, encouragement, and the emotional tone of the room. Blaming a child's family background and stopping there is the opposite of what CTET expects.

Expect one question, usually a statement-based item: 'Development is a product of…' with options naming heredity alone, environment alone, or the interaction of both. The answer is always interaction. The second common form gives a classroom situation and asks what a teacher should do — the correct option is the one that changes the environment rather than the one that labels the child or informs the parents that nothing can be done.

Is intelligence decided by heredity or environment?
Both. Heredity fixes the range within which a child's intelligence can fall, and environment — nutrition, language, schooling, stimulation — decides where inside that range the child actually lands. No serious position credits only one.
Can a teacher change a child's heredity?
No. Heredity is fixed at conception. A teacher's whole professional influence is on the environment, which is exactly why classroom quality, material and encouragement matter so much.
What does 'nature versus nurture' mean in CTET terms?
Nature stands for heredity, nurture for environment. CTET does not want you to choose a side; it wants the interactionist answer that development results from the two working together.
