Environmental Challenges
Environmental Challenges
Jharkhand's environmental problems come from the same source as its wealth. Mining, thermal power and steel built the state's economy and at the same time produced its worst pollution, land degradation and displacement.
Core conflict — mineral wealth against forest, water and settled communities
Mining-related damage
- Open-cast mining strips forest and topsoil across the coal and iron belts
- Overburden dumps occupy farmland and change local drainage
- Jharia is known for underground coal fires burning for decades
- Abandoned mine pits fill with water and become safety and health hazards
- Dust from mines and haul roads raises respiratory illness in mining districts
- Sponge iron and stone crusher units add heavy local air pollution
Water and air
- The Damodar carries mine washery discharge, fly ash and urban sewage
- Fly ash ponds around thermal plants contaminate soil and groundwater
- Rapid runoff on the plateau makes the state water-scarce despite good rainfall
- Falling groundwater tables affect drinking supply in summer months
- Dhanbad and the industrial belt regularly record poor air quality
Forest and land
- Forest diversion for mining and infrastructure is the biggest legal battleground
- Saranda illustrates the conflict between iron ore mining and a major sal forest
- Soil erosion is heavy on slopes stripped of forest cover
- Shifting land use has narrowed elephant corridors and increased conflict
- Illegal mining and unregulated quarrying add to the damage
Displacement and its consequences
| Cause | Effect |
|---|---|
| Mining projects | Loss of land and homes in mineral belts |
| Dams and reservoirs | Submergence of villages and farmland |
| Industrial townships | Acquisition of agricultural and forest land |
| Weak rehabilitation | Migration to cities as casual labour |
| Loss of common land | Reduced access to grazing and forest produce |
What is being done
- Environmental clearance and forest clearance requirements for every project
- The Forest Rights Act, 2006 gives communities a legal voice in diversion
- The Fifth Schedule and PESA require gram sabha consultation in Scheduled Areas
- Afforestation, check dams and watershed programmes address erosion and water
- Land reclamation of mined-out areas is required but unevenly enforced
- Court rulings on mining and forest land shape state policy repeatedly
झारखंड की पर्यावरणीय समस्या का मूल एक ही है — खनिज संपदा और वन, जल तथा बसे समुदायों के बीच टकराव। यही टकराव विस्थापन और प्रदूषण दोनों का कारण है।
Memory hook — Char samasya, ek jad — Pradushan, Kataai, Visthapan, Jal sankat, aur jad hai khanan. Ek line likh do to poora uttar ban jaata hai.
Yahan confuse hote hain — Adhik varsha aur jal upalabdhta ek nahi hain, aur van aavaran ka badhna kshetra ki sehat ka pramaan nahi hai.
✗ Good rainfall means Jharkhand has no water problem | ✓ Rapid runoff on hard rock leaves the state water-scarce in summer
✗ Visthapan sirf bandh se hota hai | ✓ Visthapan khanan, udyog aur bandh — teenon se hota hai
Exam pointer — JPSC Mains ka ye favourite topic hai — 'khanan aur paryavaran ka santulan' par poora prashn aata hai, aur uttar me Saranda, Jharia aur Damodar ka udaharan dena chahiye. JSSC aur JKCE me seedha — Jharia kis samasya ke liye jaana jaata hai. Current affairs se bhi ye topic jud jaata hai.
Ek nazar me
- Root cause — mining and heavy industry
- Jharia — long-burning underground coal fires
- Open-cast mining strips forest and topsoil
- The Damodar is heavily polluted by washery and urban discharge
- Fly ash ponds affect soil and groundwater
- Water scarcity despite 1,200 to 1,400 mm rainfall
- Saranda — iron ore mining versus sal forest
- Narrowing elephant corridors raise human-wildlife conflict
- Displacement from mines, dams and townships
- Remedies — FRA 2006, PESA, clearances, watershed work
Ab Jharkhand ke nadi, van aur paryavaran par prashn ExamAtlas mock test me practice karo — JPSC aur JSSC dono pattern me.
