Means of Transport

Transport is how people and goods move from one place to another. EVS classifies it by the medium — land, water and air — and traces how travel has changed from walking and bullock carts to trains and aeroplanes within a few generations.

The three kinds

KindExamplesNotes
LandFoot, bullock cart, cycle, rickshaw, bus, car, truck, trainCheapest and most used in India
WaterBoat, ferry, ship, steamerCheapest for heavy goods over long distances
AirAeroplane, helicopterFastest and most expensive

Transport is also grouped as public — bus, train, shared auto — and private — car, cycle, motorcycle; and as passenger or goods transport.

Indian Railways

  • The first passenger train in India ran in 1853, between Bombay and Thane.
  • Indian Railways is among the largest railway networks in the world and the largest employer in the country.
  • It is divided into zones, each with a headquarters, and it carries both passengers and freight.
  • For a village child, the railway station is often the first experience of a large public place with signs, queues, timetables and people from many regions.

Special transport

  • Ambulance, fire engine and police van — vehicles that must be given way.
  • Animal transport still in daily use: bullock cart, camel cart in Rajasthan, horse cart, mule and yak in the hills, elephant in forest areas.
  • Ropeway and cable car in hill regions, and boat as the daily school transport in parts of Kerala and Assam.

Road safety

  1. Walk on the footpath; where there is none, walk facing the traffic.
  2. Cross at a zebra crossing, and look right, then left, then right again.
  3. Obey the traffic light: red to stop, yellow to wait, green to go.
  4. Never board or leave a moving vehicle.
  5. Wear a helmet on a two-wheeler and a seat belt in a car.

Road safety is part of the EVS syllabus and appears in questions, so the colours and their meanings and the rule about walking facing the traffic are worth fixing.

Air transport is the cheapest way to carry heavy goods over long distances.  |   Water transport is the cheapest for heavy goods; air is the fastest and dearest.

One question comes from transport, usually a classification item or the 1853 railway date. The cheapest-for-goods comparison is the standard trap, where candidates choose rail or air instead of water. Road safety appears as a separate one-liner on traffic light colours or on which side to walk. A pedagogy version asks how to teach transport, and the answer surveys how children in the class actually travel to school.

Frequently asked questions

When did the first passenger train run in India?

In 1853, between Bombay and Thane, a distance of about 34 kilometres. Indian Railways has since become one of the largest rail networks in the world and the country's largest employer.

Which is the cheapest means of transport for heavy goods?

Water transport. Ships and boats carry very large loads over long distances at low cost, though they are slow. Air transport is the fastest but the most expensive, and road transport is the most flexible.

On which side of the road should a person walk where there is no footpath?

Facing the oncoming traffic, so that approaching vehicles can be seen and avoided. Crossing should be at a zebra crossing, looking right, then left, then right again before stepping out.
