Pictographs and Bar Graphs

A pictograph shows data using pictures or symbols, each standing for a fixed number. A bar graph shows it as bars whose length represents the value. Both make comparison instant, and reading the scale correctly is what CTET actually tests.

Pictographs

  • Each symbol represents a fixed quantity, stated in a key such as 'one book picture = 5 books'.
  • A half symbol represents half the value, so half a book picture means 2 or 3 books depending on the key.
  • Pictographs suit Classes 2 and 3 because the picture carries the meaning without any scale reading.
  • The commonest error is ignoring the key and counting symbols as ones.

Bar graphs

  • Bars may be vertical or horizontal, must be of equal width, and must have equal gaps between them.
  • The axis must be labelled and the scale stated: for example, one unit on the axis equals 10 children.
  • The bar length, not its width or colour, carries the information.
  • A bar graph suits Classes 4 and 5, once children can read a numbered scale.

Reading the scale

If the scale reads 0, 10, 20, 30 and a bar reaches midway between 20 and 30, its value is 25. Half the errors in this topic come from assuming each gridline is one unit. Always read the axis labels before reading a bar.

Making graphs in the classroom

  • Start with a real graph — children themselves standing in lines by favourite fruit.
  • Move to a picture graph with stickers or drawn symbols, one per child.
  • Then to a symbolic graph where one symbol stands for several children.
  • Finally to a bar graph with a numbered scale. This is Bruner's enactive, iconic, symbolic sequence applied to data.

One question comes from graphs, usually asking a value from a chart or which representation suits a given class. The trap in pictograph questions is a key such as 'one picture = 4 items', where candidates count pictures instead of multiplying. In bar graph questions the trap is a scale in steps of 5 or 10. Pedagogy items ask for the correct teaching order, and the answer moves from real children to pictures to symbols to scaled bars.
