Plants Around Us

Plants are studied in primary EVS through their parts, their kinds, what they give us and how they grow. The purpose is not botany but observation — a child should be able to look at a plant in the school ground and describe its root, stem, leaf, flower and fruit.

Kinds of plants

  • Herb — small, soft, green stem: coriander, mint, wheat.
  • Shrub — medium, bushy, hard stem branching near the ground: rose, tulsi, mehndi.
  • Tree — tall, thick woody trunk: mango, neem, banyan.
  • Climber — weak stem that needs support to climb: money plant, grapevine.
  • Creeper — weak stem that spreads on the ground: pumpkin, watermelon.

Facts that appear in questions

  • Green leaves make food using sunlight, water, carbon dioxide and chlorophyll — the process is photosynthesis, which releases oxygen.
  • Roots we eat: carrot, radish, beetroot, sweet potato. Stems we eat: potato, ginger, sugarcane, onion.
  • The potato is an underground stem, not a root, and is the most repeated trap in this topic.
  • Seeds travel by wind, water, animals and by bursting — this is seed dispersal.
  • Some plants such as the pitcher plant trap insects; cactus stores water in its stem and has leaves reduced to spines.

Teaching plants

  • Grow gram or moong seeds in a wet cloth in the classroom and record the change daily — the standard Class 3 experiment.
  • Take children to the school ground and let them sort real plants into herb, shrub and tree.
  • Collect and press leaves, and compare their shapes and veins.
  • Ask about plants used at home for food, medicine and worship, which draws on local knowledge.

Plants supply 2-3 questions in the EVS section. The potato-as-stem item is close to guaranteed, and the herb-shrub-tree-climber-creeper classification is asked with unfamiliar plant names, so learn the defining feature rather than the example list. Photosynthesis is asked in a simple form — what a leaf needs and what it releases. A pedagogy version asks the best way to teach germination, where the answer is the seed-in-wet-cloth experiment observed over days.

Is the potato a root or a stem?

A stem. It is an underground stem that stores food, which is why it has eyes or buds that sprout. Carrot, radish, beetroot and sweet potato are the roots that we commonly eat.

What is the difference between a climber and a creeper?

Both have weak stems. A climber uses a support to grow upwards, such as a money plant or a grapevine, while a creeper spreads along the ground, such as a pumpkin or a watermelon plant.

What does a leaf need to make food?
