Portfolio and Rubrics
A portfolio is a purposeful, dated collection of a child's own work that shows growth over time. A rubric is a scoring guide that states the levels of quality for each criterion in advance. Together they make assessment transparent, descriptive and useful to the learner.
What a portfolio holds
- Selected pieces of work, dated, with drafts kept alongside final versions.
- The child's own reflection: why this piece was chosen and what improved.
- Teacher comments naming the next step.
- Evidence beyond writing — drawings, photographs of models, recordings of reading.
The value lies in the comparison of a child with her own earlier work. A Class 2 writing sample from April placed beside one from December shows growth that no single mark can express, and it is evidence a parent understands immediately.
Rubrics
A rubric lists the criteria down one side and the levels of performance across the top, with a short description in each cell. For a Class 4 oral presentation the criteria might be content, clarity of voice, organisation and use of material.

- Give the rubric to children before the task; a hidden standard is a trap, not an assessment.
- Keep three or four levels and plain language for primary classes.
- Describe what is present, not what is missing — 'audible to the front row' rather than 'poor'.
- Use the same rubric for self-assessment and peer feedback.
Why these fit the primary classroom
Both tools support the CCE and NEP direction: descriptive rather than comparative, continuous rather than terminal, and usable by the child herself. NEP 2020's holistic progress card, with inputs from the child, peers and teachers, is essentially a portfolio-and-rubric system at the level of a whole school year.
