How Reverse Syllogism Works

You are shown conclusions that definitely follow, then offered several statement sets as options; the correct set is the one from which those conclusions genuinely flow. Work forward from each option: draw the statements and test whether the given conclusions come out true. The right option makes every stated conclusion definite, while wrong options leave at least one conclusion unsupported. It is ordinary syllogism run backwards, so no new theory is needed — only your existing drawing skill.

The Elimination Speed Routine

Do not test options in full one by one. Instead, take the strongest conclusion — usually an 'All' or a 'No' — and eliminate any statement set that cannot possibly produce it. This knocks out two or three options in seconds, leaving one or two to verify properly. Elimination on the hardest conclusion first is far faster than checking easy conclusions across every option, and it is the same time-saving instinct that wins the rest of the Reasoning paper.

Solved Examples

Example: Conclusions: 'Some Morks are Table' and 'All Zephyrs are Morks'. A statement set must let both follow. 'All Zephyrs are Morks, Some Morks are Table' produces exactly these, so it is the answer; any set lacking 'All Zephyrs are Morks' fails the strong conclusion and is eliminated at once.

Speed Strategy for the Whole Set

Treat the syllogism set as guaranteed marks and attempt it early, while your mind is fresh and the clock is kind. Budget about twenty-five seconds per question: ten to draw, ten to check conclusions, five to mark. Never re-argue a conclusion verbally once the diagram is drawn — trust the picture. If a single question resists after forty seconds, mark your best call and move on, because in a sectional-timed paper a stubborn syllogism question steals time from puzzles and seating sets that carry more marks. Practise until drawing the four statement types is automatic, so that on exam day the pencil moves before you consciously think. That reflex, more than any clever trick, is what converts this chapter into a clean five-out-of-five.
