Sentence Rearrangement
Sentence Rearrangement
Sentence rearrangement gives the parts of a single sentence out of order. Unlike a para jumble, the clues here are grammatical rather than logical: find the subject and the main verb, and build the sentence around them in the order subject, verb, object and then modifiers.
The structure to build
Subject, then verb, then object, then the phrases that modify them
- The part containing the main subject usually comes first.
- A part beginning with a preposition is a phrase and cannot open the sentence.
- A part beginning with a relative pronoun such as who or which must follow the noun it describes.
- A part beginning with a conjunction joins two clauses and sits between them.
- The part ending with a full stop is the last one.
Difference from a para jumble
| Feature | Para jumble | Sentence rearrangement |
|---|---|---|
| Unit | Whole sentences | Parts of one sentence |
| Main clue | Logic and connectors | Grammar and structure |
| First element | The general statement | The subject |
| Typical time | 40 to 50 seconds | 25 to 35 seconds |
Worked approach
Approach 1. If one part reads who was appointed last year, it must follow whichever part names a person, since the relative pronoun needs an antecedent immediately before it.
Approach 2. If a part begins with in spite of or because of, it is a phrase and cannot be the subject, so it belongs either at the start as an introductory phrase or later in the sentence, never as the main clause.
Approach 3. If two arrangements both read acceptably, choose the one where modifiers sit closest to what they modify, since a misplaced modifier makes the sentence technically wrong even when it is understandable.
Solved examples
Example 1. Given the parts a talented player, was selected, for the national team, and the boy, the order is the boy, a talented player, was selected, for the national team.
Example 2. Given the parts because of the rain, was postponed, the match, the order is because of the rain, the match, was postponed, with the introductory phrase first.
Traps SSC repeats
✗ A prepositional phrase can be the subject | ✓ It never is; find the noun that acts
✗ Any order that reads smoothly is acceptable | ✓ Modifiers must sit next to what they modify
Exam pointer — Sentence rearrangement appears in some shifts and takes 25 to 35 seconds, faster than a para jumble because the clues are grammatical rather than logical. Attempt it before para jumbles. Together, the whole English section should take 15 minutes, which under sectional timing means finishing every grammar and vocabulary question before starting the passage sets.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is sentence rearrangement different from a para jumble?
A para jumble reorders whole sentences using logic and connectors, while sentence rearrangement reorders parts of a single sentence using grammatical structure such as subject, verb and object.
Which part comes first in a jumbled sentence?
Usually the part containing the subject. A part beginning with a preposition is a phrase and can only be an introductory element or a later modifier, never the subject itself.
Where does a part beginning with who or which go?
Immediately after the noun it describes, since a relative pronoun needs its antecedent directly before it. This single rule often fixes the whole order.
How long should these questions take?
About 25 to 35 seconds, which is faster than a para jumble. They are worth attempting before para jumbles when both appear in the same paper.
60-second recap
- Build subject, verb, object, then modifiers.
- A prepositional phrase is never the subject.
- Relative clauses follow the noun they describe.
- Keep modifiers next to what they modify.
- Faster than para jumbles: attempt these first.

Para jumble से अंतर
| पहलू | Para jumble | Sentence rearrangement |
|---|---|---|
दिए गए हिस्से a talented player, was selected, for the national team, और the boy हों, तो सही क्रम है the boy, a talented player, was selected, for the national team।
उदाहरण 2. दिए गए हिस्से because of the rain, was postponed, the match हों, तो सही क्रम है because of the rain, the match, was postponed, जिसमें introductory phrase पहले आता है।
SSC के दोहराए जाने वाले जाल
✗ A prepositional phrase can be the subject | ✓ It never is; find the noun that acts
✗ Any order that reads smoothly is acceptable | ✓ Modifiers must sit next to what they modify
Frequently Asked Questions
Sentence rearrangement para jumble
60-second recap
- Subject, verb, object, फिर modifiers के क्रम में बनाएँ।
- Prepositional phrase कभी subject नहीं होता।
- Relative clauses उसी noun के बाद आते हैं जिसका वे वर्णन करते हैं।
- Modifiers को उसी के पास रखें जिसे वे modify करते हैं।
- Para jumbles से तेज़: इन्हें पहले करें।
