Sources of Food

Sources of Food

All food comes from plants or animals. EVS asks a child to trace what is on her plate back to its source, which turns an everyday meal into a lesson on farming, animals, seasons and the people whose work brings food to a household.

Plant sources

Part eatenExamples
RootCarrot, radish, beetroot, sweet potato
StemPotato, ginger, sugarcane, onion
LeafSpinach, coriander, cabbage, mustard leaves
FlowerCauliflower, banana flower, broccoli
FruitMango, tomato, brinjal, gourd
SeedRice, wheat, gram, groundnut, mustard

Note that tomato and brinjal are fruits in botanical terms even though they are cooked as vegetables — an item CTET has used. Cauliflower is a flower and potato is a stem.

Animal sources

  • Milk from cow, buffalo and goat, and the curd, ghee, paneer and butter made from it.
  • Eggs from hen and duck.
  • Meat and fish.
  • Honey from bees, which collect nectar from flowers.

From the field to the plate

A Class 4 exercise traces one item backwards. The rice on the plate came from a shop, the shop from a wholesaler, the wholesaler from a mill, the mill from a farmer's field, and the field needed seed, water, soil and months of work. Doing this once changes how a child sees a meal, and it introduces the idea that many people's labour lies behind ordinary food.

Food from different regions

EVS deliberately compares food across India: rice and fish in the east and coastal south, wheat and maize in the north, ragi in Karnataka, litti-chokha in Bihar, thepla in Gujarat. What people eat depends on what grows there, on climate and on culture — the point of the chapter is that no food habit is superior to another.

Food chains and dependence

A simple food chain shows the dependence: grass, grasshopper, frog, snake, eagle. Plants make their own food and are called producers; animals that eat them are consumers. This is the earliest form of ecological thinking in the primary curriculum and appears in Class 5.

Cauliflower is a vegetable so it must be a fruit of the plant.  |   Cauliflower is the flower part; tomato and brinjal are the fruits.

Sources of food give one or two straightforward questions, most often matching a food with the plant part it comes from. Learn the six-row table above by heart, because the same items are reused. The reliable traps are potato as a root, cauliflower as a fruit and tomato as a vegetable. A regional-food question sometimes appears and the correct answer always respects local food habits rather than ranking them.

Frequently asked questions

Which plant parts do we eat as food?

All six: roots such as carrot, stems such as potato and ginger, leaves such as spinach, flowers such as cauliflower, fruits such as mango and tomato, and seeds such as rice, wheat and gram.

Is a tomato a fruit or a vegetable?

Botanically it is a fruit, since it develops from the flower and contains seeds. In cooking it is treated as a vegetable, and EVS questions usually ask for the botanical answer.

Why do food habits differ across India?

Because what people eat depends on what grows in their region, on the climate, on what is affordable and on long-standing cultural practice. Rice dominates where water is plentiful and wheat where it is drier.
