Spelling Errors

Spelling Errors

A spelling question asks which of four options is spelt correctly, or which is spelt wrongly. SSC draws from a fixed list of difficult words, most of which turn on double letters. Learning that list is faster than learning general spelling rules.

Double letters are the usual test

Most SSC spelling questions turn on whether a letter is doubled. Accommodation has two c and two m, occurrence has two c and two r, and harass has one r and two s. Learning these words individually is more reliable than any rule, because English spelling has too many exceptions.

The rules that do hold

  • i before e except after c, as in believe, receive and ceiling.
  • A silent e is dropped before a suffix beginning with a vowel: hope becomes hoping.
  • A final y after a consonant becomes i before a suffix: happy becomes happiness.
  • A single final consonant after a short vowel doubles before ing: run becomes running.

Check the doubled letters first; that is where the error usually sits

Method in the exam

Read each option and mark where a letter could plausibly be doubled. Compare that against your memory of the word rather than trying to derive it. If two options both look plausible, choose the one you have actually seen in print, since recognition is more reliable than reasoning for spelling.

Words that change meaning with spelling

A separate group of questions turns on two correctly spelt words that differ in meaning. Stationary means not moving while stationery means writing materials; principal means chief while principle means a rule; complement completes something while compliment praises it; and council is a body of people while counsel means advice. Here both spellings are correct in themselves, so the sentence decides which is required, and no amount of spelling knowledge helps without reading the context.

Solved examples

Example 1. Which is correct: accomodation, accommodation, acommodation, accommadation? The answer is accommodation.

Example 2. Which is correct: seperate, separate, sepparate, separete? The answer is separate.

Example 3. Which is correct: maintainance, maintenance, maintanance, maintenence? The answer is maintenance.

Example 4. Which is correct: recieve, receive, receve, recive? The answer is receive, following i before e except after c.

Exam pointer — Spelling gives about 1 question per shift and takes 10 seconds. It is one of the few English questions where recognition alone decides the answer, so revising the standard list of thirty or so difficult words is a small investment that returns a reliable mark in most shifts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which words does SSC repeat in spelling questions?

Accommodation, occurrence, embarrass, harass, necessary, separate, maintenance, privilege, committee, recommend, definitely and government appear most often.

What is the i before e rule?

Write i before e except after c, as in believe and receive. The rule holds for most common words, though English has exceptions to it.

How do I choose between two plausible spellings?

Choose the one you have actually seen in print. Recognition is far more reliable than trying to derive a spelling from rules, since English spelling is highly irregular.

Where does the error usually sit in these words?

In the doubled letters. Accommodation has two c and two m, occurrence has two c and two r, and harass has one r and two s, which is where most wrong options differ.

60-second recap

  • Most errors involve doubled letters.
  • Accommodation: two c and two m.
  • Occurrence: two c and two r. Harass: one r, two s.
  • i before e except after c.
  • Trust recognition over derivation.

  • i before e except after c, जैसे believe, receive और ceiling में।
  • Silent e स्वर से शुरू होने वाले suffix से पहले हट जाता है: hope से hoping।
  • व्यंजन के बाद आया अंतिम y suffix से पहले i बन जाता है: happy से happiness।
  • छोटे स्वर के बाद अकेला अंतिम व्यंजन ing से पहले दोहरा हो जाता है: run से running।

पहले दोहरे अक्षर जाँचो; गलती आमतौर पर वहीं बैठी होती है

Exam

Example 1. सही कौन सा है: accomodation, accommodation, acommodation, accommadation? उत्तर है accommodation

Example 2. सही कौन सा है: seperate, separate, sepparate, separete? उत्तर है separate

Example 3. सही कौन सा है: maintainance, maintenance, maintanance, maintenence? उत्तर है maintenance

Example 4. सही कौन सा है: recieve, receive, receve, recive? उत्तर है receive, जो i before e except after c के हिसाब से चलता है।

Exam pointer — Spelling से हर shift में लगभग 1 सवाल आता है और उसमें 10 सेकंड लगते हैं। यह English के उन गिने-चुने सवालों में है जहाँ सिर्फ पहचान से उत्तर तय हो जाता है, इसलिए तीस के आसपास कठिन words की तय list दोहराते रहना छोटी सी मेहनत है जो ज़्यादातर shifts में एक पक्का अंक लौटाती है।

Frequently Asked Questions

Spelling के सवालों में SSC कौन से words दोहराता है?

Accommodation, occurrence, embarrass, harass, necessary, separate, maintenance, privilege, committee, recommend, definitely और government सबसे ज़्यादा बार आते हैं।

i before e वाला rule क्या है?

60-second recap

  • ज़्यादातर गलतियाँ दोहरे अक्षरों की होती हैं।
  • Accommodation: दो c और दो m।
  • Occurrence: दो c और दो r। Harass: एक r, दो s।
  • i before e except after c।
  • निकालने से ज़्यादा पहचान पर भरोसा करो।
