A teaching aid is any material that helps a child understand. In EVS the best aid is the real thing — a real leaf, a real coin, a real visit — and printed or made aids come next. The aid is judged by whether it makes the idea clearer, not by how it looks.

Principles of using an aid
- Choose it for the concept, not for decoration.
- Prefer the real object over a picture of it.
- Make sure every child can see, touch and handle it.
- Introduce it at the right moment, and remove it when the point is made.
- Let children make aids themselves where possible; making the model teaches more than seeing it.
- Check it beforehand — an aid that fails during the lesson costs more than it gains.
Improvised and low-cost aids
Government primary schools rarely have a store of equipment, and this is not an excuse. Bottle caps, matchboxes, seeds, stones, old newspapers, cloth, clay and waste packaging make excellent EVS material. Children collecting and making the aid is itself the activity, and NCERT's own suggestions for EVS assume exactly this kind of material rather than purchased kits.
The blackboard and the textbook
The blackboard remains the most used aid in an Indian classroom and is worth using well — clear headings, one idea at a time, drawings children can copy. The textbook is an aid too, not the syllabus itself; the NCERT EVS books are written as a set of questions and activities rather than as passages to be memorised, and using them as reading matter alone wastes their design.
