Ancient Education and Science
Ancient India developed both a monastic university system and a strong tradition in mathematics, astronomy, medicine and metallurgy. Institutions such as Taxila, Nalanda and Vikramshila attracted students from across Asia, and Indian numerals, surgical practice and metallurgy influenced the wider world for centuries.

Mathematics and astronomy
The decimal place value system and the use of zero as a number are India's largest single contribution to world science, transmitted to Europe through Arab intermediaries as Hindu-Arabic numerals.

Medicine and life sciences
Ayurveda rests on two foundational compilations. The Charaka Samhita, associated with Kanishka's court physician, deals with internal medicine and the theory of the three doshas. The Sushruta Samhita deals with surgery and describes over a hundred instruments, cataract operations and rhinoplasty, which is why Sushruta is called the father of surgery. Vagbhata's Ashtanga Hridaya synthesises both and completes the classical triad (Brihat Trayi).

Metallurgy and technology
Indian metallurgical skill was famous abroad. The Mehrauli iron pillar in Delhi, about 7.2 metres tall and dated to the Gupta period, has resisted rust for more than 1500 years because of a protective layer formed from its high phosphorus content. Wootz steel from south India was exported to West Asia and became the basis of Damascus blades. Copper and bronze casting reached its height in the Sultanganj Buddha of the Gupta age.

Who founded Nalanda and who destroyed it?
Nalanda Mahavihara was founded by the Gupta ruler Kumaragupta I in the fifth century CE and was later supported by Harsha and the Pala rulers. It was sacked in the late twelfth century during the Turkish invasions, an event associated with Bakhtiyar Khalji, and the loss of its library ended the institution.
What is the Brihat Trayi in Ayurveda?
The three great classical texts - the Charaka Samhita on internal medicine, the Sushruta Samhita on surgery, and the Ashtanga Hridaya of Vagbhata, which synthesises both. Together they form the canonical base of Ayurvedic practice.
What did Aryabhata actually say about the earth?
In the Aryabhatiya of 499 CE he explained that the apparent daily movement of the stars is caused by the rotation of the earth on its own axis, and that eclipses are caused by shadows rather than by demons. He did not propose a heliocentric solar system in the later European sense.
