Prime Minister Narendra Modi opens SEMICON India 2026 at Yashobhoomi in Dwarka today, and the Union Cabinet has just lifted the EPFO wage ceiling from ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 a month after a 12-year freeze. Two very different stories, both near certain to show up in your next SSC or Banking paper.

- 1. SEMICON India 2026 opens in New Delhi. PM Modi inaugurates the event on 17 September at Yashobhoomi (India International Convention and Expo Centre), Dwarka. It runs 17 to 19 September on the theme "Transform Tomorrow: Silicon to Systems, Building the Ecosystem", with 500+ exhibitors, 150+ speakers and delegates from 40+ countries. - 2. EPFO wage ceiling raised to ₹25,000. The Union Cabinet approved the hike on 16 September, the first revision since September 2014. Around 51 lakh more workers come under EPF, EPS and EDLI. - 3. India stays 131st in the Global Gender Gap Index 2026. The World Economic Forum released the report on 16 September, covering 145 economies. India's parity score is 64.5% against a global average of 69.2%. Iceland tops the list for the 17th straight year with 93% of its gap closed, followed by Finland and Norway. - 5. India at the 69th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference. The Indian delegation is attending the conference in Cape Town, South Africa from 12 to 19 September, led by Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh. The theme is "New Leadership Opportunities for the Commonwealth: Parliamentary Action to Strengthen Democracy and International Law". - 6. India and Bangladesh talk air connectivity. Civil aviation officials of both countries met on 16 September to discuss better air links, a revision of the bilateral air services agreement and an open skies approach. Tag: All exams

- 8. UPI gets an MDR of 0.4% above ₹2,000. NPCI has set a Merchant Discount Rate of 0.4%, capped at ₹300 per transaction, on person-to-merchant UPI payments above ₹2,000, effective 15 October 2026. It ends six years of zero-MDR UPI and touches roughly 4% of P2M volume. The merchant pays it; banks cannot levy an extra charge on transactions up to ₹2,000. Tag: Banking / SSC
- 9. Retail inflation at 4.82% in August 2026. CPI-based inflation rose on the back of food prices, per the data released on 14 September. It stays inside the RBI's 2% to 6% tolerance band but sits above the 4% mid-point target. Tag: Banking / SSC / BPSC
- 10. Varuna Elevated Corridor cleared for Varanasi. The 43.218 km elevated highway, approved at ₹10,998 crore, will link NH-31 with the Varanasi Ring Road along the Varuna river. It falls under the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. Tag: SSC / Railway

The 20th Asian Games will be held in Aichi Prefecture and Nagoya, Japan, from 19 September to 4 October 2026: 43 sports, 469 medal events, 46 nations and territories. - 14. RUDHRA wins the James Dyson Award 2026 India national stage. Announced on 16 September, RUDHRA is a voice-enabled Braille printing system that turns spoken input into reverse Braille patterns, replacing the slate-and-stylus grind for visually impaired students. - 15. Exercise Yudh Abhyas 2026 begins. The 22nd edition of the India-US army exercise started on 15 September at the Auli Foreign Training Node in Uttarakhand and the Mahajan Field Firing Range in Rajasthan. Each side has fielded 600 personnel. India's 14 Infantry Division is led by Major General Amaresh Gunjan; the US side is the 1st Infantry Brigade Combat Team of the 11th Airborne Division under Colonel Benjamin Jackman. - 17. GSLV-F17 puts EOS-05 in orbit. ISRO launched EOS-05, India's first imaging satellite in geosynchronous orbit, on 29 August 2026 from the Second Launch Pad at Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota. It was the 19th flight of the GSLV and placed the satellite in a Sub-Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit, the heaviest payload a GSLV has carried. - 18. Bihar's government under Samrat Choudhary. Samrat Choudhary took over as Chief Minister on 15 April 2026, the first BJP leader to hold the post in Bihar. The cabinet was expanded on 7 May 2026 at Gandhi Maidan in Patna, where 32 ministers were sworn in by Governor Lt Gen (Retd) Syed Ata Hasnain. The party split was BJP 15, JD(U) 13, LJP (Ram Vilas) 2, HAM 1 and RLM 1. Nishant Kumar, son of JD(U) president Nitish Kumar, was among the inductees. - 19. BPSC recruitment numbers to memorise. BPSC TRE 4.0 was notified for 32,388 school teacher vacancies with applications opening on 1 September 2026, the largest single teacher drive in the state this cycle. Separately, the BPSC 72nd CCE vacancy count was revised to 1,187. An Assistant Professor recruitment for roughly 9,532 posts is also in the pipeline. - 20. Jharkhand replaces MGNREGA with G-RAM-G and clears RIMS-2. The state cabinet approved 27 proposals on 3 July 2026, including the Viksit Bharat G-RAM-G rural employment scheme in place of MGNREGA, with special provisions for Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups. It also cleared RIMS-2 in Ranchi at ₹4,189.41 crore, run through a project management unit named Jagruti, with IIM Ranchi as the centre of excellence and XISS Ranchi doing impact assessment. On the exam front, the Jharkhand High Court in August 2026 stayed the state order cancelling a set of JSSC examinations, and the JSSC JTGLCCE 2026 schedule for about 611 posts is still awaited. One honest caveat before you copy these into your notes. The UEFA final venues and the Bihar and Jharkhand vacancy figures came from news aggregators rather than a primary release, so treat them as indicative and confirm on the commission websites before you write them in an answer sheet. Everything else here is traceable to PIB, WHO, WEF, ISRO, NPCI, the Ministry of Defence or a named official statement.
