The Birsait Faith
Birsait was the religious code Birsa Munda preached among the Mundas. It taught one supreme god, rejected spirit worship and liquor, and set the community apart from both missionaries and outsider landlords — which is what made it political.

What Birsait taught
- Worship of one supreme god in place of many spirits and sacrifices
- Give up liquor and animal sacrifice; keep a code of cleanliness
- Wear the sacred thread and follow a distinct daily discipline
- Reject both Christian conversion and dependence on outsider priests
- Treat Birsa as a prophet and healer — followers called him Dharti Aba
- Return to the Munda's own religious authority over land and village
Why a religion became a political force
- A separate faith gave the Mundas a single identity to organise around
- Giving up liquor was an attack on the liquor contractor, an outsider figure
- Rejecting outside priests meant rejecting the authority attached to them
- The faith made the demand for Abua Disum, Abua Raj sound like a duty, not a request
- This is the same pattern seen in Safa Hor and later in the Tana Bhagat code
The slogan
Abua raj ete jana, maharani raj tundu jana — let the queen's rule end and our own rule begin
- Abua Disum, Abua Raj means our country, our rule
- The slogan turned a land dispute into a claim to self-ruleबार-बार पूछा जाता है
- It is quoted in almost every account of the Ulgulan
- It later echoed in the Jharkhand statehood movement itself

How the faith was organised
- Birsa appointed close followers as preachers who carried the code from village to village
- Village gatherings combined worship, healing and discussion of land grievances
- Followers marked themselves out by dress and by refusing the liquor shop
- The faith spread fastest in the Khunti, Tamar, Basia and Ranchi belt
- British officials watched the meetings closely because attendance kept rising
- By 1899 the same network of preachers became the command structure of the Ulgulan
