Boundary facts that get asked

  • Jharkhand is landlocked — no coast and no international boundaryबार-बार पूछा जाता है
  • Garhwa is the only district that touches Uttar Pradesh
  • Garhwa also touches Chhattisgarh, making it the state's western corner district
  • Sahibganj and Pakur form the eastern edge along the Ganga and West Bengal
  • The Singhbhum districts carry the southern boundary with Odisha
  • The state was itself carved from Bihar, so the northern boundary is the newest of the five

Location and size

  • Area about 79,716 sq km — roughly 2.4 percent of India's area
  • Approximate extent — about 22 degrees to 25 degrees North latitude
  • Approximate extent — about 83 degrees to 88 degrees East longitude
  • The Tropic of Cancer passes through the state, crossing near Ranchi
  • Being fully inside the plateau makes the state cooler than the plains of Bihar at the same latitude

Why the boundary shape matters

  • Coal and iron belts continue across the border into West Bengal, Odisha and Chhattisgarh
  • The Damodar valley is shared with West Bengal, which is why DVC is an inter-state body
  • The Subarnarekha basin is shared with Odisha and West Bengal
  • Elephant corridors run across the Odisha and West Bengal boundaries, shaping wildlife policy
  • Migration for work flows mainly toward West Bengal, Bihar and beyond along these routes

Border trivia in one list

  • Shortest border — with Uttar Pradesh
  • Corner district touching two states — Garhwa (UP and Chhattisgarh)
  • River that forms part of the eastern edge near Sahibganj — the Ganga
  • Highest point of the state — Parasnath hill, inside Giridih district
  • Neighbouring states created alongside Jharkhand in 2000 — Chhattisgarh is one of them

झारखंड स्थलरुद्ध (landlocked) राज्य है — न समुद्र तट है, न कोई अंतरराष्ट्रीय सीमा। उत्तर प्रदेश से केवल गढ़वा जिला लगता है।

Memory hook — Paanch padosi ka jod — BOW-CU: Bihar (uttar), Odisha (dakshin), West Bengal (poorab), Chhattisgarh (pashchim), Uttar Pradesh (uttar-pashchim). UP sabse chhoti seema — sirf Garhwa.

Yahan confuse hote hain — Padosi rajya aur unki disha aksar ulti yaad rehti hai.

West Bengal Jharkhand ke pashchim me hai  |   West Bengal poorab me hai, Chhattisgarh pashchim me

Jharkhand ki ek antarrashtriya seema hai  |   Jharkhand landlocked hai, koi antarrashtriya seema nahi

Exam pointer — JSSC aur JTET me seedha question aata hai — kitne rajya lagte hain, kaunsa jila UP se lagta hai. JPSC isko Tropic of Cancer, Damodar valley aur inter-state river disputes ke saath jod kar map-based ya statement form me poochhta hai. Geography section ka ye sabse aasan pakka question hai.
