Economic and Social Infrastructure

NCERT Class 11 • Indian Economic Development • Chapter "Infrastructure"

Economic and Social Infrastructure

Infrastructure is the set of supporting facilities and services on which the production of goods and services depends. It does not directly produce anything for sale, yet nothing can be produced efficiently without it, which is why infrastructure is described as the foundation of development.

The Two Kinds of Infrastructure

  • Economic infrastructure directly supports production: energy, transport, communication, banking, insurance and irrigation.
  • Social infrastructure raises the quality of people: education, health, housing, sanitation and drinking water.
  • Both are needed together, because healthy educated workers cannot be productive without power and transport, and vice versa.
  • Infrastructure raises productivity, lowers cost, widens markets and attracts investment.
  • It also improves the quality of life directly through clean water, sanitation and health care.
  • Weak infrastructure is one reason production costs stay high and industry avoids backward regions.

India's Infrastructure Position

  • Rural areas lag behind in roads, power, sanitation, safe drinking water and health facilities.
  • Many rural households still depend on biofuel such as firewood and dung, which harms health, especially of women.
  • Urban areas face congestion, housing shortage, water stress and waste management problems.
  • Infrastructure needs very large investment with returns spread over many years, which is why the state traditionally built it.
  • Public private partnership was introduced so that private capital and efficiency can join public planning.
  • User charges, tolls and regulatory bodies were created to make infrastructure services financially sustainable.
  • Rural road and electrification programmes were launched to close the village level gap.
  • Investment in infrastructure creates employment during construction and raises output afterwards.
  • A country that wants to grow at a fast rate must raise infrastructure investment ahead of demand, not after it.
  • Digital connectivity has become a part of basic infrastructure alongside roads and power supply.
  • Maintenance matters as much as construction, since an unmaintained asset stops delivering its benefit.

Infrastructure — the supporting facilities and services, economic and social, on which the working of an economy depends.

Exam me kaise aata hai

  • Power and transport belong to — economic infrastructure
  • Education and health belong to — social infrastructure
  • Firewood and dung used as fuel are called — biofuel
  • Private capital joining public projects is called — public private partnership

UPSC/State PSC ke liye

  • Infrastructure creates externalities, since its benefit spreads far beyond the user who pays, which is exactly why private investment alone underprovides it.
  • Rural infrastructure gaps raise the effective cost of production and are a major reason industry clusters near existing urban centres.

Yahan confuse hote hain

Infrastructure means only roads and bridges | It also includes power, banking, education and health  |

Social infrastructure has no effect on output | Healthy educated workers are more productive  |

Public private partnership means full privatisation | It is a joint arrangement, not a complete transfer  |

Ek nazar me

  • Economic infrastructure supports production; social infrastructure builds people.
  • Both raise productivity and quality of life.
  • Rural India lags in roads, power, water and sanitation.
  • Public private partnership brings private capital into public projects.
