Land, Soil and Energy Conservation
Land is a fixed resource: no more of it can be produced, and what is degraded takes decades to restore. Energy resources such as coal and petroleum are equally finite, which is why the conservation of both follows the same logic of using less and using better.
Land Degradation and Soil Conservation
- Land degradation means the loss of the land's productive capacity through erosion, salinity, waterlogging, mining waste and industrial effluent.
- Deforestation, overgrazing, faulty irrigation and mining are the main causes.
- Overgrazing is a serious cause in dry regions, and waterlogging with salinity is common where irrigation has no drainage.
- Soil erosion by wind and water is the most widespread form, with gully erosion producing badland as in the Chambal ravines.
- Contour ploughing, terrace farming, strip cropping and shelter belts control erosion directly.
- Afforestation, proper grazing management, check dams and gully plugging restore degraded land.
- Organic manure, crop rotation and reduced chemical use maintain the soil's structure and fertility.
Energy Conservation
- Coal and petroleum were formed over millions of years and will not be replaced within human time.
- Burning them also releases carbon dioxide, oxides of sulphur and nitrogen, and particulate matter.
- Energy conservation means using less energy for the same work, which is cheaper and faster than building new capacity.
- Practical measures include efficient appliances, better building design, public transport, well maintained vehicles and avoiding waste.
- Shifting to solar, wind, biogas, small hydel and other renewable sources reduces dependence on fossil fuel.
- Energy audits in industry identify exactly where energy is being wasted.
- The principle throughout is reduce, reuse and recycle, applied to materials and energy alike.
