Sustainable Living and Citizen Action
Environmental policy is written by governments, but most of what damages the environment is done in ordinary daily life: what we buy, how much we waste and how we travel. Sustainable living is the practice of reducing that damage through choices anyone can make.
The Three R Approach
- Reduce means using less in the first place, and it is the most effective of the three because unused resources need no processing at all.
- Practical steps include repairing rather than replacing, buying only what is needed and avoiding single use items.
- Reuse means using an item again in the same or another form, which saves the energy that recycling would consume.
- Recycle means processing waste material into new products, which works only when waste is properly segregated.
- Wet waste such as kitchen and garden waste can be composted at home into manure.
- Dry waste such as paper, plastic, glass and metal can be recycled if kept clean and separate.
- Hazardous waste such as batteries, medicines, paint and electronics must be kept out of ordinary waste entirely.
Everyday Action and Citizen Role
- Saving water through fixing leaks, using a bucket instead of a running tap, and harvesting rainwater at home.
- Saving energy through efficient lights and appliances, switching off what is not in use and using daylight and natural ventilation.
- Sustainable transport means walking, cycling, sharing rides and using public transport wherever possible.
- Sustainable consumption means preferring local and seasonal produce, reducing food waste and carrying one's own bag.
- Planting and caring for trees, maintaining a kitchen garden and protecting local water bodies are direct contributions.
- Citizens also act through right to information, public hearings, complaints to pollution boards and public interest litigation.
- The right to a clean environment has been read by the courts as part of the right to life, which gives citizen action legal force.
| Action | Why It Works |
|---|---|
| Reduce | Nothing has to be made, moved or disposed of |
| Reuse | Saves the energy recycling would need |
| Recycle | Returns material to use instead of landfill |
| Compost | Turns wet waste into manure at source |
Segregation — separating waste at source into wet, dry and hazardous categories so that each can be handled correctly.
Exam me kaise aata hai
- Which of the three R is most effective — reduce
- Kitchen and garden waste can be turned into — compost
- Separating waste at source is called — segregation
- The right to a clean environment is read as part of the — right to life
UPSC/State PSC ke liye
- Segregation at source is what makes the whole waste system work, because mixed waste cannot be composted or recycled economically once it has been combined.
- Reading the right to a clean environment into the right to life turned environmental protection from a policy preference into an enforceable right.
Yahan confuse hote hain
✗ Recycling is the best of the three R | Reduce is the most effective; recycling comes last | ✓
✗ Waste can be segregated later at the dump | Mixed waste is very hard to separate usefully | ✓
✗ Individual action makes no difference | Household choices decide a large share of total resource use | ✓
Ek nazar me
- Reduce, reuse and recycle in that order of effectiveness.
- Segregate wet, dry and hazardous waste at source.
- Save water and energy and choose sustainable transport and consumption.
- Citizens act through information, hearings, complaints and the courts.
Ab practice karein
