Acids, Bases and Metals
Acids, Bases and Metals
Acids have a pH below 7 and turn blue litmus red, while bases have a pH above 7 and turn red litmus blue. A pH of 7 is neutral. When an acid and a base react they neutralise each other, producing salt and water, which is the basic reaction of this topic.
The pH scale
pH below 7 is acidic, exactly 7 is neutral and above 7 is basic
| Substance | Nature | Approximate pH |
|---|---|---|
| Lemon juice | Acidic | About 2 |
| Pure water | Neutral | 7 |
| Baking soda solution | Basic | About 9 |
| Household bleach | Strongly basic | About 12 |
Acids found in nature
| Acid | Found in |
|---|---|
| Citric acid | Lemon and other citrus fruits |
| Acetic acid | Vinegar |
| Lactic acid | Curd and sour milk |
| Formic acid | Ant sting |
| Tartaric acid | Tamarind |
| Hydrochloric acid | Human stomach |
Metals and alloys
Oxygen is the most abundant element in the Earth's crust and aluminium is the most abundant metal. Metals are generally good conductors, malleable and ductile, while non-metals are usually poor conductors and brittle.
| Alloy | Composition | Use |
|---|---|---|
| Brass | Copper and zinc | Utensils and fittings |
| Bronze | Copper and tin | Statues and medals |
| Steel | Iron and carbon | Construction |
| Stainless steel | Iron, chromium and nickel | Utensils and instruments |
Neembu me citric acid, sirke me acetic acid aur dahi me lactic acid hota hai. Ye jodi SSC har saal kisi na kisi roop me poochta hai.
The reactivity series and corrosion
Metals are arranged in a reactivity series, with potassium and sodium at the most reactive end and gold and platinum at the least reactive. A more reactive metal displaces a less reactive one from its compound, which is the basis of many extraction processes. Corrosion is the gradual attack of a metal by air and moisture, and rusting of iron is its most familiar form, requiring both oxygen and water. Galvanisation, coating iron with zinc, prevents rusting because zinc is more reactive and corrodes in place of the iron beneath it.
Solved examples
Example 1. Which acid is present in vinegar? Acetic acid.

✗ Acids turn red litmus blue | ✓ Acids turn blue litmus red; bases do the reverse
✗ Bronze is copper and zinc | ✓ Bronze is copper and tin; brass is copper and zinc
Exam pointer — Acids, bases and metals give about 1 question per shift, and the acid-and-source pairing is the most common form. The brass and bronze distinction is the second most common. Both are 10-second questions, so this is one of the better-value blocks in the science portion.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the pH range of acids and bases?
Acids have a pH below 7 and bases above 7, with 7 being neutral. The scale runs from 0 to 14, and a lower value means a stronger acid.
Which acid is present in curd?
Lactic acid. Vinegar contains acetic acid, lemon contains citric acid, tamarind contains tartaric acid and an ant sting delivers formic acid.
Which is the most abundant metal in the Earth's crust?
Aluminium. Oxygen is the most abundant element overall, and silicon is the most abundant after it, but the most abundant metal is aluminium.
What is the difference between brass and bronze?
Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc, while bronze is an alloy of copper and tin. SSC frequently swaps the two in its options.

| Baking soda
|---|---|
| Citric acid |
| Acetic acid |
| Lactic acid |
| Formic acid |
| Tartaric acid |
| Hydrochloric acid |
