Fuels and gases

  • LPG is mainly butane with some propane.
  • CNG is mainly methane.
  • Water gas is a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen.
  • Carbon monoxide is poisonous because it binds strongly to haemoglobin.
  • Nitrogen is the most abundant gas in the atmosphere, followed by oxygen.

Plaster of Paris is made by heating gypsum; it sets hard when mixed with water

Uses worth knowing

Baking soda is used in cooking and in fire extinguishers, washing soda in cleaning and in softening hard water, and bleaching powder in disinfecting water. Dry ice sublimes directly from solid to gas, which is why it leaves no liquid behind.

Khaane wala soda aur dhulai wala soda alag hain. Baking soda sodium bicarbonate hai aur washing soda sodium carbonate.

Substances in food and cleaning

Several everyday substances appear regularly in questions. Bleaching powder, calcium oxychloride, is used to disinfect drinking water and to bleach fabric. Vinegar is a dilute solution of acetic acid used as a preservative. Soaps are the sodium or potassium salts of long chain fatty acids, and they clean by surrounding oily dirt so that it can be washed away in water. Hard water contains dissolved calcium and magnesium salts, which is why soap lathers poorly in it, and washing soda is used to soften it.

Solved examples

Example 1. What is the chemical name of baking soda? Sodium bicarbonate.

Example 2. What is dry ice? Solid carbon dioxide.

Example 3. Which gas is most abundant in the atmosphere? Nitrogen.

Traps SSC repeats

Baking soda and washing soda are the same  |   Baking soda is the bicarbonate; washing soda is the carbonate

Oxygen is the most abundant atmospheric gas  |   Nitrogen is, at about 78 percent

Exam pointer — Everyday chemistry gives about 1 question per shift and it is pure table recall, making it one of the fastest questions in the paper at 10 seconds. Because the same twenty or so substances recur year after year, this table gives a better return per minute of study than any other part of the science syllabus.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the chemical name of washing soda?

Sodium carbonate. Baking soda is sodium bicarbonate, and the two are frequently confused in SSC options despite having different uses.

What is dry ice?

Solid carbon dioxide, which sublimes directly into gas without becoming liquid. That property makes it useful for cooling without leaving moisture behind.

Which gas is most abundant in the atmosphere?

Nitrogen, at about 78 percent, followed by oxygen at about 21 percent. Argon and carbon dioxide make up most of the small remainder.

How is Plaster of Paris made?

By heating gypsum, which drives off part of its water content. When water is added again, it sets into a hard mass, which is why it is used in casts and moulds.

60-second recap

  • Baking soda is sodium bicarbonate; washing soda is sodium carbonate.

Sodium bicarbonate

उदाहरण 2. Dry ice क्या है? ठोस carbon dioxide

उदाहरण 3. वायुमंडल में सबसे ज़्यादा कौन-सी gas है? Nitrogen
