Cell and Tissues

Cell and Tissues

The cell is the structural and functional unit of life. Robert Hooke observed cork cells in 1665 and gave the name. SSC asks this topic almost entirely as organelle-and-function pairs, so the table of organelles is the whole preparation required here.

Tissues

Plant tissues are meristematic, which divide and cause growth, and permanent, which have taken a fixed form. Animal tissues are of four kinds: epithelial covering surfaces, connective joining and supporting, muscular producing movement, and nervous carrying impulses.

Cell theory and cell size

The cell theory, put forward by Schleiden and Schwann and later completed by Virchow, states that all living things are made of cells, that the cell is the basic unit of life, and that every cell arises from a pre-existing cell. Cells vary enormously in size: the ostrich egg is the largest single cell, the nerve cell is the longest, and the human red blood cell is among the smallest. Organisms made of a single cell, such as amoeba and paramecium, are unicellular, while plants and animals are multicellular. Cell division takes two forms, mitosis producing two identical cells for growth and repair, and meiosis producing four cells with half the chromosome number for reproduction.

Solved examples

Example 1. Which organelle is called the powerhouse of the cell? The mitochondria.

Example 2. Which organelle is called the suicide bag? The lysosome.

Example 3. Who discovered the cell? Robert Hooke, in 1665, while examining cork.

Example 4. Which structure is present in plant cells but absent in animal cells? The cell wall, along with chloroplasts.

Traps SSC repeats

Ribosomes carry out photosynthesis  |   Chloroplasts do; ribosomes make proteins

Animal cells have a cell wall  |   Only plant cells do, made of cellulose

Exam pointer — Biology gives 1 to 2 questions in the General Awareness section and the cell block is the most predictable part. Every question is a direct pairing and takes 10 seconds. Because the same organelle nicknames recur, this table is worth revising on the morning of the exam alongside the everyday chemistry table.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which organelle is called the powerhouse of the cell?

The mitochondria, because it releases energy in the form of ATP through respiration. The lysosome is called the suicide bag and the chloroplast the kitchen of the cell.

Who discovered the cell?

Robert Hooke, in 1665, while examining a thin slice of cork under a microscope. The nucleus was later discovered by Robert Brown.

What is the difference between plant and animal cells?

Plant cells have a cellulose cell wall, chloroplasts and a large central vacuole, none of which are present in a typical animal cell.

What are the four types of animal tissue?

Epithelial tissue covers surfaces, connective tissue joins and supports, muscular tissue produces movement, and nervous tissue carries impulses.

60-second recap

  • Mitochondria is the powerhouse; lysosome the suicide bag.
  • Chloroplast performs photosynthesis; ribosome makes proteins.
  • Robert Hooke discovered the cell in 1665.
  • Plant cells have a wall, chloroplasts and a large vacuole.
  • Four animal tissues: epithelial, connective, muscular, nervous.

Mitochondria

Lysosome
