Agencies of Socialisation
Agencies of socialisation are the groups and institutions that teach a child how to live in society. They are classed as primary or secondary by closeness, and as formal or informal by whether they teach deliberately. Family, peer group, school, community and media are the five a CTET candidate must be able to place.
Two ways of classifying

Note that the two classifications cut across each other. Family is primary and informal. School is secondary and formal. The peer group is primary and informal. Media is secondary and informal. Mixing these two axes is the commonest error on this topic.
What each agency uniquely contributes
- Family — mother tongue, first values, emotional security, gender roles, food and worship habits. It acts earliest, so its imprint is deepest.
- Peer group — the only relationship among equals. Here a child learns to lose, to bargain, to keep a secret and to hold his ground without an adult refereeing.
- School — impersonal rules applied to all, punctuality, cooperation with strangers, achievement, and constitutional values of equality and secularism.
- Community and neighbourhood — festivals, local customs, dialect, the sense of belonging to a place.
- Media — a window to a world beyond the village, along with models of behaviour and aspiration that the school has to help children read critically.
Conflict between agencies
The agencies do not always agree. A child may hear at home that girls should not play outside and in school that all children are equal. This conflict of agencies is real in Indian classrooms, and the teacher's task is not to attack the home but to make the school a consistent, credible model of equality — mixed seating, mixed groups, girls in leadership roles.
